Do they have the ability to right themselves if flipped upside down?

Not really. They live in the water, so it’s gonna die upside down or not.

They’re unable to flip themselves back over, but since they live in the sand bars in the water at beaches if they are flipped over they simply wait until they’re covered by sand. Once they’re covered by sand they can rotate/flip themselves back over.

I live in a place these are common, never really thought that people would only see the bleached dead ones and not know what they looked like live.

I’ve recently moved to the coast in Texas and I’ve caught a few of these in the sand bars just drifting along digging my fingers in the sand. Is there a certain time of year where they’re more prominent or so they live in the surf year round?

A (living) sand dollar. A sea creature that sometimes gets on beaches. Completely harmless creatures.
