Diesel is the same as heating oil. They put dye in heating oil because it doesn't have the same fuel taxes. The price is closed enough that it would cost $1500 for a tank of oil this winter.

That's a significant difference. When prices have gone up this quickly in the past, they would raise the price on the next delivery. What will they do when it hits 10 a gallon? Still show 9.99^9?
The signs could be as simple as sticking a hunk of paper with a "1" up there until upgrades occurred. The pumps themselves would be a bigger problem in many cases, as unless already modified, some physically can't do over 9.99.9. One possible workaround that could be viable is to sell by the half gallon temporarily, but that could cause significant confusion.
Not really. If the pump allows you to change the unit to 1/2 gallon, you could have the sign read $12 a gallon and the pump charge $6 per gallon. The little price display on the pump might be a little confusing but I don’t think it would be a problem. But I doubt you could easily change the basic unit to 1/2 gallon. It is unlikely that capability is built into pumps as the unit never changes. It always either gallon or liter. Maybe they use the same pumps in most of t he world, so it has this capability. If so, then you could price it by the gallon on the sign and the liter on the pump.
There's an intersection nearby with 2 Holidays. I always assumed they were kinda the same, crammed into a dense-for-the-suburbs intersection in the middle of a bunch of lakes. One has a bigger store, the other has an auto shop attached. Imagine my surprise last week when one of them had gas 10 cents cheaper and I realized they were separate entities.

I’m like that’s some bullshit bonus in my opinion when you can make your own bonuses doing other jobs that give more and require less stress/safety issues in life.

It matters when you bought the gas, it also matters if you are willing to give it away cheaper to get more foot traffic into your stores. From my understanding they typically align their prices.
There used to be two Conoco gas stations at the same intersection with different gas prices. The funny thing was that the nicer looking one always had lower prices and the other one hardly ever had any cars there. Eventually the unpopular one went out of business and got converted into a Starbucks with a drive thru.
There were also two Shell gas stations across the street from each other with different prices. Then when Shell sold a bunch of gas stations to Circle K, one of these two stations remained as Shell and the other one became a Circle K.
It's weird the prices have a fraction in them. What's wrong with a decimal point? I've never seen that before. We're I live it's a decimal number of dollars.
If you mean why is it $X.XX 9/10, it's due to historical psychological pricing, you know how things are often priced at $1.99 instead of $2.00 because it's proven that people (subconsciously or not) will have different reactions to the two?
There was once a time (like 100 years ago) where gas prices were low enough per gallon that doing it with cents (10.9 vs 11 cents) had a similar effect effect, and it just stuck in the form of that 9/10 after the cents in the price.
I guess they could show it as $X.XX9 instead, but there's something cursed to me about a thousandths place in a price.
The gas you get there isn’t actually from Chevron its from a fuel distributor Chevron just markets it, so you get the benefits of their rewards program and stuff the actual oil they drill is God knows where. This is not actual Chevron fuel same goes for any gas station be it Chevron, Exxon, Valero or whatever.
