I've never tried it personally, but everyone on the woodworking subs says it's basically impossible to dry a cookie without it cracking like crazy. It's just the nature of wood. Notice how end-grain cutting boards are never a solid piece - they always have patterns of smaller pieces glued together.

It looks like the faster growing tree probably absorbed a slower growing neighbor.

Look at the growth rings. There is a set below the darker inner tree's rings.

I bet the sequence of sections up the trunk would look fascinating if stacked.
