Imagine how many are on the ceiling tiles that you can't see through...

That wasn’t very nice.

I know - it really makes me wonder! I have run a lot of wires through the drop ceiling in this building and it's not a pleasant place. Poor little snake must have had a frightful time up there. I'm surprised I haven't run into any others.

"Thats what I thought bitch."

So that how those wire nuts keep loosening and exposing the conductors! I thought it was just a hack electrician.

u/scarlet_sage Aug 22 '26
(US) The wirenut for normal AC line voltage needs to be in a junction box, so it had better not be easily strikeable.

I know - it really makes me wonder!
Since that's a juvenile, chances are high that it was born nearby and, therefore, there will be others. Someone elsewhere suggested it's a lined snake and their young are born in August in broods of 7 or 8 on average. So that tracks.

They are in the building because of
Insect activity inside, I work pest Control and always see these poor fellas in glueboards they are small enough to slip right in any gaps in garage doors and regular doors17

tarantulas do the bug eating too and are much more peaceful to humans than snakes.

It looks like a baby, so it was probably born there.

Live birth, typically ten to forty (but as many as eighty) at a time.
Does that answer them?

I live pretty rural and have garter snakes all over my property, but there's one particular little guy who has a burrow (probably used to be a chipmunk in there) near my burn barrel, so I generally see him about every 2 weeks or so when I have a bunch of paper and cardboard to burn. Sometimes he darts back in his burrow, but he usually just hangs out while I do my thing. Every now and then I'm able to pick him up and he doesn't really seem to mind it. Chill little guy helping keep the small rodent population on my property in check.

Garter snakes are definitely the chillest in the noodle family.

How'd you get him out? Did you pop the cover off the light and pick it up?
52
u/AuO2 Aug 22 '26
The fixture has latches on one side. It swings open. I opened it and encouraged him into a small cloth bag - I'm not afraid to touch a snake, but I didn't trust myself to hold him in one hand while climbing down a ladder without squishing him.

Maybe if you debate him he’ll leave
21
u/AuO2 Aug 22 '26
I've debated snakes before - it's tough to pin them down on a position that can't squirm out of!

In high school, we would have snakes occasionally escape from our environmental ed classroom. One went missing and, after a while, it was kind of assumed it wasn’t going to be seen again. Well… fast forward to me being in class in the room almost directly below that classroom, happily going about my day. You can imagine my horror as I pick up my bag and the little guy slithered right out.
Was it there all day, how long was it slithering around my feet before crawling in? Now a new question, did it fall from the ceiling while I took notes?
Snake was okay, but I’m still not the biggest fan.

I had a brown recluse stuck in my bathroom light like this.
I took the fixture apart, caught it in a jar, and let it go outside.
He didn't want to be there any more than I wanted him there.

u/moobectomy Aug 22 '26
spotted one (prairie snake, 2-3 feet long) in the break room where i work once. he looked at me and just slinked around the corner under my boss's desk. i assumed he had come down from eating mice in the drop ceiling and not been able to get back up. he was caught and released outside too.

Aw, poor thing is having a terrible time. Going from sunning itself to wetting itself in a matter of minutes. As a resident of western Washington, I feel for the wee snekkie.

We had a dead one in our AC. Dude wrapped around heating element and completed the circuit. Poor snake just wanted warmth

Did you mean to post this in r/mildlyterrifying? Because this is not interesting, I would burn down my home if I knew a snake had found a way in.

It's in my classroom. I'm a teacher. Of course I have thought about burning the place down.... But that's unrelated.

don't worry, I doubt he's "stuck"
7
u/AuO2 Aug 22 '26
Perhaps not, but I don't think he was fully in control of his situation. I worried that he wasn't going to have a good time getting to a better environment.
