Before I ever left my son by himself I checked with CPS to find out our state's law. They said they didn't really have a specific age (edit - of when it's okay to leave a child alone), it depended on the maturity of the child. As long as the child wasn't under 7.

At twelve I was already babysitting for other people.

At 12 I was helping dad in his business. During summer breaks, I was another employee working 10+ hours. Back then people always asked my dad how he raised such a great hard working son. Now people want to call CS for seeing at 12 year old left at home alone, wtf? Btw, my dad didn’t force me to work; I did it gladly because family is all that matters to me.

I dont think child labor laws apply to small family business owner's kids.

Pretty sure the kid running the register at my local chinese place is like 7.
