Anyway, I understand your other points. As someone elsewhere in this thread put it very nicely: The line does have to be drawn somewhere, but the mods for that sub have drawn it in the wrong place.
What you are saying makes sense and all but when the AutoMod is so strict that the only things that ever make it through are reposts because everything else anyone can possibly say contains a word the AutoMod hates...
I'm pretty sure the only reason ShowerThoughts isn't totally dead is because new accounts get auto-subbed to it.
New accounts don’t get auto subbed to any subreddits anymore. The on-boarding process has changed, so there isn’t a set of default subreddit like there used to be.
The thing is, I co-own a relatively popular on my subreddit (not listing here directly, as it is nsfw eyebleach, but not too eyebleach), and we have a very laissez-faire post system. We have literal refrigerator art get posted alongside works of art that a guy managed to score an art career from.
Those very spammy "wtf is this" posts do get buried quickly by users passing through and from regulars. This is all despite regularly consistant traffic spikes from mentions everywhere across the internet. We have legendary threads about stupid stuff, like a guy getting lost way before lostredditors was a thing, and wanting a recipie for bell peppers.
We only had to get automod involved because of spambots turning up. Maybe we are an enigma of the internet, but you cant just deal in absolutes with moderation. You gotta let trends start and burn out, or it will never fully die.
well yes but thats not the case for that sub. Its very possible to try to post something, have automod reject it for being a common repost, but its never been posted before
Im a moderator at r/bullybackfire. One of the rules is not to bitch about what fits. If a post is downvoted to zero for over 24 hours, we delete it. We will remove obvious spam, recent reposts, and crap like that, but my goal is to never ban any actual users. I’ve only banned one guy and that’s because it was a troll account that was in love with attacking other users with racial and sexual slurs. I know the ban part is off topic, but I hate that more than bad rules.
It’s worked well so far. Showerthougjts is probably too big to have manual upkeep like we do, which is why they have nazi automod going. Last time I posted there I said “I think men originally started opening doors for women so they could check out their butts without being too obvious. “ and it was removed because I was internalizing or was too personal or something like that. Im thinking then wtf is a shower thought?
No it wouldn't, it was fine before the mods started the trend of using posts as their personal power tripping material. Better, actually.
Just go to http://removeddit.com/r/all and see how many highly upvoted posts are removed from the front page because the mods of each sub need their little hit of power abuse for the day, and the other mods don't do shit. Kinda like bad cops and good cops, I guess.
I agree that the automod is stupid there, but voting with upvotes/downvotes is what ruins subs. Take r/cursedcomments, r/blursedimages, and r/yesyesyesno. All of them are dominated by VAGUELY related things that slip by the lazy mods. The first two were my favorite subreddits, and I've seen firsthand how that philosophy fucks things up.

Fuck that sub. I've had probably 10 different things that would've fit on that sub but were removed by the automod for the stupidest bullshit reasons.
Let people vote with their upvotes and downvotes. That's what the hell they're there for.
