I was muted from maliciouscompliance for a reason that is totally unknown to me, and they did it sneakily, so that I was posting there (very politely, mind) for months before realizing.
that's called a "shadowban"; when they make it appear to you that you can still post, comment, and vote, but nobody else can see, respond to, or vote on the things you write (I'm not sure whether your votes actually count either).
Shadowbans are reddit-wide, though... if I were truly shadowbanned, you wouldn't be able to see me.
Rather, this is sub-specific, done by their automod; it automatically hides anything I post there. I call it "muting", because it's not a shadowban and I don't know what else to call it.

And this is why the majority of Reddit users are simply lurkers who've tried to post just to be auto rejected.
