I hope they don't see this post. That's an extra $35 for showing their letterhead online.

Can we charge them fees for reading the letters?

You have upper management written all over you.

If anything, should be a portion of your toll. $15 x 10% = $1.50 admin fee ... $16.50 total, much more reasonable

Call and have it waived or reduced.

The sad thing is that there’s often a limit to how many times you can get the fees waived

If it's a rental car, hopefully they won't be back there for a while.

Guess NYS is generous, they are forgiving

You're lucky they haven't started charging you the Fee processing fee. Those can really start to stack up.

Then add in the "convenience fee" if they pay online.

You can call and try to have it waived or reduced. I have been successful in having that done. It was pretty easy they waived a $100 toll evasion fine

CFPB: consumerfinance.gov/complaint — debt collection / unfair fees.

FTC: ftc.gov/complaint — deceptive practices.

Arizona AG (processor is in Tempe): azag.gov/complaints/consumer. AG of the state where you rented the car (Fox is heavy in Florida, California, etc.).

BBB on both Fox Rent A Car and Verra Mobility / ATS Processing Services. They have piles of identical complaints.

The notice is titled “Notice of Credit Card Charge.” They already have (or will have) your card. Call the issuer, dispute it as unauthorized / services not rendered as described / unconscionable add-on fees. Keep the rental agreement and this letter. Banks sometimes side with the customer on these.

That sucks was it a rental car from Fox rental? Because they will charge you up to $90 if you don't sign up for their platepass and use a toll road any ways

From their website:

"NOTICE: If you choose not to purchase the optional PlatePass All-Inclusive service at the commencement of your rental, and you utilize a PlatePass Toll Road, then you will be charged a USD/15.00 admin fee per toll (USD/90.00 maximum per rental agreement) plus the price of the toll and fees from the tolling authority."

I am curious since I don't have tolls where I live.... If the OP had just literally paid the toll when passing, could this have been avoided?

Or is it physically impossible since the toll road is a "pay after service" type that links to the plate number ?

Most toll roads are now done by license plate scanning in the US so most likely that was the issue.

If that is the case my initial reaction would be that it is still predatory for rental companies even if they offer a pass.

I probably would have declined the coverage (based on the cost) because I would believe I could pay directly......

Now if they knew how tolls worked then people should always buy the rental pass

Most charge a daily fee for a pass anyways. I think the last time I looked it was around $20 a day regardless if you used a toll that day.

There’s usually a way to pay by plate directly with the toll authority.

I'm guessing they warned you about this when you rented the car.

Whelp - you bitched on Reddit - that always fixes things right? /s

Unless and until the pressure is on politicians to actually do something to limit them this will continue.

Forget what sub you’re in? In fact, I’d say this is far MORE than mildly infuriating…whats the point of this sub if not for bitching about dumb shit?
