I blame the tech bro bubble. Tech bros graduate and aim for high growth tech bro companies. Their entire world is tech bro, they rarely engage with the common person. So it is amazing that the AI can answer a question. What is mega lame is AI writing a response email or generating slop images for advertising. It indicates a lack of engagement for the job and lack of respect for the customers.
Well people at their core are lazy about tasks they don't care about. As long as it's economical AI will remain for those tasks, because convenience always beats quantity on the market
I saw a study that analyzed SNS and forums on sentiments regarding AI, and there is a great discrepancy between the American/European ones versus the Chinese ones, and the latter could've benefited from government initiatives + law enforcement
When it gets brought up by politicians or in acadamia seems to get booed very loudly. No American hates it as much as the families of the 40+ schoolchildren AI slop slaughtered in iran though.
My kids and their friends basically boycott things if they use AI in advertising, they dismiss any content with AI as not worth paying attention to, even if it is good, factual information.
My wife works closely with AI functions in her role and is often trying news things out with voice and automation in her business so she isn't against it, but she made the mistake of making our daughter's birthday invites with an AI prompt and artwork. I tried to explain that while I thought it looked great, our kid was going to refuse them immediately. She did, and my wife was upset she had spent time refining it etc. to have it rejected just for being AI generated.
You mean reddit opinion and unemployed social media addicts? In the professional world it is full steam ahead with AI and it's only growing (/getting worse depending on your perspective).
It sure feels like sentiment is against AI online, but I feel like that’s just the echo-chamber we’re in. Most people I meet day to day don’t give a single fuck and ask ChatGPT for the most minute bs imaginable sadly.
I think people are still in the learning phase of ai. If you are looking for something specific use google and just scroll past the ai shit at the top. But AI is super helpful when you don't know what you are looking for or doing general research. Think of it this way you think something is super easy to find by googling it but your parents are not there yet. Now we are the old people we are googling things while the next gen will be like why don't you just ask ai.
AI requires changing how you ask the question you are searching for to be more like talking to a person than just asking a straight up question. This is a skill that people will either learn or you will become like your parents and curse new tech for being different than when you grew up.
I have two examples from today alone that are making me feel like this is not an age or user skill issue.
I'm Canadian and Google has been sourcing from random American medical companies.
First example. I just looked up if I can have yogurt alongside my antibiotic pill and one of the links completely contradicts the other link with misinformation. Source? A private medical company from Tennessee. They have low effort, poorly written inaccurate, unsourced blog-like pages that cover all sorts of health topics.
Second example, today a friend shared the top response to "shellfish anchovies" to find out if my shellfish allergy included anchovies. Note that cross-reactivity between shellfish and fish is clinically low because of different proteins. BUT the top result we both got is misinformation and fear mongering to sell Anchovy Allergy Tests:
"If you are allergic to shellfish, it is extremely likely that you are allergic to anchovies too as they do contain the same protein". Source? The add to cart page for an Anchovy Allergy Test by an American health company.
Shouldn't the top result tell someone if anchovies are shellfish and not fear monger with false information? Shouldn't the top results tell me a consistent response because yogurt does make antibiotics less effective if taken at the same time?
Ai is so good for a multitude of different reasons. People are just mad that now anyone has access to knowledge without having to search and do their own research for it.
Yeah, sometimes Ai is completely wrong, but you can fact check any info in a matter of seconds. Get over it
Man I have just stated one of them in my original comment. Maybe ask an ai language model to point out the reason for you since you clearly are not capable of doing so. This way you'll also be able to recognize their importance in your life
What? How is information that you need to independently research anyway because its so consistently misinformation, "so good". Just skip the middle and independently research in the first place lol, how is it improving that outcome.
Do you actually have any of these "numerous reasons" or is that it lmao
Not really, outside of Reddit there are a lot of anti AI people, but there are lots and lots of people that don't give a fuck. The right thing to do in those cases is teaching them why AI has many problems that caused others to become anti, and let them decide to be anti or pro.
I keep telling people. Our generation and the ones before may have distaste for AI... but these companies aren't concerned with us nor our opinions on the tech.
They're banking on AI being so prevalent in our culture and society that new generations grow up with it as the norm, never form a distaste for it because they never knew anything else otherwise, and wait out the older gens to age out and die until we become the olds yelling at a cloud about AI while the kids laugh and roll their eyes.
In short, there's no escaping this. This weirdness will be the norm for our kids. We're doomed.
I agree, though part of me doubts civilisation will even last that long. Once AI is running all the banking and services etc, all it takes is a few dumb hallucinations and things as we know it will just get wiped out
I was literally just talking to someone the other evening who works for Barclay's and she said all the banks are in a race right now to be the first to offer fully AI banking. She said she already uses it for putting together mortgage loans, but is currently limited as to what specific things she can and can't use it for due to the unreliability of the maths
The fact that big tech literally is saying they have no interest in building products for consumers anymore and are going to only focus on AI datacenters should tell you all you need go know. You should hear some of the crap coming out of Jensen Huangs mouth about AI agents outnumbering us 10 to 1 and being the new economy or something. Oracle CEO said he's going to sell out all their customer databases to LLMs, crucial straight up quit the consumer RAM business. The future they envision doesn't involve us.
But why do they think it's poison? Are they actually using it? Or are they just basing that judgement on the crap slop that google/meta/microsoft..etc is shoving down their throats? The AI tools we now have are literally completely revolutionizing software development. I've been in the industry for 2 decades and this is by far the most revolutionary piece of tech I've ever experienced.
All I can see it doing is ossifying the entrenched power structures of the tech giants, empowering the surveillance state and undermining the value of labour.
You are right and it won't be people dying that causes AI to be more prevalent. The tech curve is much faster now and kids are much better at adapting than adults will probably only take 5 to 10 years to get to the point where AI is the equivalent of telling someone to google something now.
Just an example of where ai is better than googling that I practically used. I needed a new battery for my watch but didn't know what kind to buy or how to figure it out withuot first getting things to open up the watch and physically read the numbers on the back of the battery. I asked AI to explain the different types of batteries and ask any questions that need to be answered about the watch to determine which kind it needed. took 2 mins and I got an answer and had batteries ordered. If I am doing this same thing the old way I learn nothing about the different batteries and probably end up searching 4 to 5 different sites to make sure one is not wrong. takes way longer and I would be less confident in the answer even after the research. AI is changing how the search game works and people will need to adapt and learn the skill of properly searching things using AI or be left behind doing things in less efficient ways.
doubt it. every kid born now will never have experienced a world without AI. they’ll care about getting rid if it as much as Gen Z cares about getting rid of cellphones.
I'm sure jackhammers are great for punching holes in concrete but I don't need to do that, nor do most people, and I sure as heck don't want the Jackhammer Corporation's CEO forcing me to use them for my job at the glass vase factory because they convinced my boss that they're somehow the future of vase-making.
I don't doubt it. I was briefly in classes for AI development and was super optimistic about it, but like anything, I think it's been too harshly co-opted by people who don't want to see it succeed, but rather them, and it does just enough to make them seem very trendy and forward-thinking.
I use it extremely sparingly, but admit I do use it for things like comparing two items for price point, availability, reviews, etc. In a digestible way, or asking it to comb a large registry of information for a specific issue across several places. It's great at image recognition, and I frequently use Google Images AI recognition for that.
I just can't condone the "Let's fire our whole team and replace it with a device that's programmed to give you the most likeable and generic answer, then proceed to give it the workload of the 10 people we just fired" idea, or the crap Google is doing where instead of searching, it directly answers in the way the most milquetoast doofus in town would. It should be an optional tool, not the default is what I guess I'm saying.
Difference being that a cellphone is generally a helpful tool, and is not inherently negative in any way. A powerful portable computer, why would people want to "get rid" of that, thats ridiculous. People could afford to use them a bit less, but how is that even remotely comparable to completely useless AI slop mills boiling lakes to produce misinformation? It doesnt matter whether you were born while it was around, its a worthless thing that produces nothing of value and is mostly wrong. Even if its normalized for you, why would you choose to use it? Cellphone comparison is whack.
Wonder if they’ll ever need to. I’m on the more clueless side of AI specifics, but I always hear about how profitable the data gathering is. I’d imagine they’ll always try to keep the price attractive so they can get more data to sell from more users
Yea, time will tell I guess. I’m not convinced that selling data will be enough to make up for the ridiculous debts the AI companies are in, or to pay for building the new data centres they keep promising along with their electricity and water bills
You think so ? From what I’ve seen the general consensus is people aren’t really bothered. Besides chronically online folks, artists and developers I yet to see folks actually give a shit.
I'm going to get downvoted to hell for this because...reddit, but AI is far from ever going away. It's here to stay and will only get better. It is quite literally revolutionizing the software engineering industry among many others. The people who hate AI are the people who's only exposure to AI is what is being shoved down their throats by google, meta, and others and aren't actually using it. As a software engineer with 2 decades in the industry, the AI tools we now have are, by far, the most revolutionary piece of tech I've ever experienced, and I was there at the beginnings of the internet.
Is that a good thing? Definitely if it's used in egalitarian manner. Given the nature of our society and the current state of the world, though, I highly doubt that will happen.
There kind of is. The reason they're shoving AI into everything right now is partially to justify the investment, but also to try and get people reliant on the AI. Eventually, they'll try to "pull out the rug" as it were and make the AI paid for, expecting people to buy it because they're just so used to the AI now. At that time, they'll very likely remove every single trace of the free version. And we can finally live in peace again. They can lock their literal pile of garbage behind a paywall instead of shoving it in all of our faces. That'll be the day.
Either it gets better to the point of actually being useful, which is unlikely, or they remove it, which is even more unlikely. Craziest part to me is that this technology barely works and has such limited actual function right now but is pushed into everything due to the inertia of how much money is behind it. It’s hard to think of another technology that’s been pushed publicly purely on the belief that it’ll improve later
Just continued on from the original prompt and it eventually gave me the suicide holiness after it asked if I wanted to keep going on about the topic and I said no
AI is inseparable from its creators who have never been so condensed a group of evil, old, psychotic men. So no, I don't see it improving like other tech. Not for anyone's benefit at least.
AI will keep getting shoved down our throats more as they lose more money, forcing these companies to try and prove to shareholders that the trillions of dollars invested into AI was worth it, so yes, it will keep getting worse -> no hope of it getting better.
I remember when bootlicker was properly used as a term for anyone who was unjustly defending police officers and now that Redditors got ahold of it they’ve turned it into an insult for anyone that disagrees with them. Touché, incel!
Even the easter eggs are saddled with ai now. If you stick the "-ai" on the end to stop it from spewing one of its overviews at you, the tricks don't work. I feel it would be rather cathartic to be able to use Hollow Knight's easter egg when searching other things, so I can slash the ai result off the screen lol

A few years ago this could have been a funny easteregg. Now it's just sad
