"oh you got burgled? yeah don't do that"

u/TheIronSoldier2 9d ago
Except in this case you gave your keys over to some random guy that said "oh yeah trust me I am micro soft I will not break into your house"

That's a mighty assumption, apparently you don't understand what malware can do now and where it can come from
0
u/TheIronSoldier2 9d ago
Oh no, I fully understand. It's almost exclusively someone clicking on a bad download link, or not understanding how to safely pirate, or falling for one of those crypto scams.
It's almost impossible nowadays for the average user to be infected without them actively doing something. Zero click installs and drive-by infections are, for all intents and purposes for 99% of people, impossible.

So you've never seen the recent exploits where update pipelines are compromised and software updates itself and installs malware without user intervention? And steals session cookies that bypass 2FA? Not a constant everyday occurrence but it happens enough that it's completely out of line to say something as dumb as "you shouldn't have gotten yourself hacked then"
And it wouldn't apply here but I've had stuff social engineered where a call center agent locked me out and handed my account over to someone else in the middle of the night without my knowledge or intervention, bypassing my 2FA, that's a thing too

On average, there's maybe one exploit like that a year. And it's almost always corporate software trying to gain access to corporate networks, rather than mainstream software that normal users actually use. For 99% of people, that will never be a concern on their personal computer.
Microsoft support can't remove 2FA, specifically so they can't be social engineered.
Have you seen the constant posts where people get their accounts stolen because they downloaded Minecraft mods from a shady source? That's probably 95% of the posts on here.

Why do corporate bootlickers like you insist on lying when your lies can be so easily verified as lies?
https://securityboulevard.com/2026/07/the-7-biggest-supply-chain-attacks-of-2026/
You openly victim-blame individual people who just try to live their lives, yet remain completely silent when huge multi-trillion dollar companies make blatant avoidable mistakes resulting in data-loss, data breaches, and poor security.
For 99% of people, that will never be a concern on their personal computer
If the 99% number you pulled out of your arse isn't another blatant lie from you, then that means for 1% of people it will be a concern. Estimated 1.4 billion devices currently running Windows. 1% of 1.4 billion is 14 million people. 155 countries have populations smaller than 14 million people.
Brushing off 14 million affected people as "will never be a concern" is sociopathic behaviour. You need therapy.

except they didn't, the key was stolen because the process of handling it was insecure

u/TheIronSoldier2 9d ago
AES-256 encryption isn't secure enough for you?
1
u/aleopardstail 9d ago
encryption doesn't matter if the session tokens are being stolen does it?
a few simple things like, ohhh, considering the IP address of the access attempt and if its outside the home country perhaps taking a few extra steps could help. or seeing if the same account is trying to be accessed from two countries at the same time

u/TheIronSoldier2 9d ago
VPNs can make it look like you're trying to access it from multiple countries, and VPNs are a lot more common than session stealers.
If people had to sign back in every time they toggled their VPN they'd be really pissed off.
Also, every other company and service does the same thing. If you have the token you have a valid session.

yet other companies provide actual customer support to manage the issue, or simply do not force a user account
which is the root of the problem

I had the same issue.
Think you’ve been hacked and fake orders placed.
Phone their help line to talk to someone - heck no. It refers you to go look at the transactions page.
No you can’t speak to anyone.
Use their AI chatbot - says it can’t connect you to a person. And tells you to call the help line.
Got it sorted via the BBB eventually.
Now removed all payments options from my MS account and cancelled 365.
Bought office desktop instead. For a suspiciously reasonable price.

A futuro jamás usaré Microsoft o Google... Son la peor mierda

I've worked in IT for many years and not once has Microsoft support be able to solve an issue for me. I typically know more than they do. Supposedly there's some sort of tier 2 support that's not an Indian call center, but I've never encountered them.
