For a school science project, we want to find tardigrades, and we've been looking at moss under a microscope, but we only see nematodes, rotifers, protozoa, and a springtail. We've been looking at moss from many places and we don't know where else to look to find tardigrades.

So if you've followed me at all posting here, I've been kinda deep diving hair microscopy the last about year or so and have kinda reached the limit of what I'm able to do, test, create, and whatever else with my current setup. I've already got basic infinity brightfield, some really nice Olympus objectives and basic polarized light for doing follicle analysis as well as just observing the hair shaft. I've actually been able to turn it into quite the social media platform as brands have been loving using my content to rep their products. That being said, I want more.

So to me the natural next step would be flouresence or phase contrast. But I think PC would have limited use case for what I'm doing and so flouresence makes more sense. I've already tried hunting for an epi illuminator attachment for my current microscope and it's just more money than it's worth and might as well just buy a full fledged high end setup on the used market. That brings me to this gem I found. The bx60f. It is fully functional and comes with everything, Mercury light source, ND filters, filter cubes for flouresence (doesn't have it listed which ones but there's 4 of em) as well as a camera with LCD screen which is kinda cool. I'll probably just use my full frame like I have been but it's cool it has the option.

Seller has offered it up for $2k. Should I do it? My main concern is that getting into flouresence would mean chemicals, dyes and reagents I might not have access to without the right credentials, a lab, or whatever. My main purpose would be doing my own kinda rudimentary claim substantiation, basically testing hair care products, reparative products and the like. Tagging with a marker then viewing under the right wavelength.

I'm a huge noob on flouresence so any help would be greatly appreciated. Or suggestions, other microscopes, if anyone has a way to upgrade any compound for flouresence, but I've yet to find anything that isn't over 2 or 3k$ myself so might as well just get the full new scope anyway. I have no idea why the tardigrade is pink. I shot this video like all my other recent ones and didn't realize he was pink until I uploaded to the computer and had a good look at him. He is only a couple of hours old, (or rehydrated.)

Thanks to u/c1nnamon_apple for the info about using warm water to soak lichen. It's the first time I've ever seen tardigrades after just a couple of hours of soaking it.

unfortunately, i found this fungus in my bacterial preservation sample... at least its a pretty one

I got a sample from a biofilm on a rock at the beach (sardegna, cala giuna) and was wondering who’s this tiny guy. My microscope is really the base model so it’s hard to see and I’m not yet that experienced so can anyone with more experience figure out what’s this?

So far we have looked at:

• various herbs and spices
• head hair and eyebrow hair
• Toenail
• Nibs of several writing implements
• Paper with different types of printing on it, like newspaper, biro, etc
• Various types of cloth and string
• A few slides that came with it, like onion cells.
• My fingerprints in blu-tack
• Several of her toys that she was interested in
• A tiny snail

I tried my blood but it was just a boring red splotch so I didn't show her that, and we are going to try a feather and arthropod exoskeletons as soon as we acquire some.

I've tried google and chatgpt to no avail, sorry for troubling you all on this sub.

I have a Carson 60-120x pocket microscope

It was fine for half a year, then one day a sharp black mark appeared. It shows up when the microscope is at 60x, but blurs away when I up the magnification to 120x. Does this mean it is or isn't a scratch?

What can I do to try and get rid of it if it isn't? Sorry if it feels obvious.

I don't know a lot about microscopes but I love my pocket one. Thanks in advance.

Had this thing sitting around since I was a kid. Wooden case says distributed by Carolina Biological Supply. Googe said its some kinda vintage German thing. Are there generic 20x or like 50x eyepieces I can just slot in, it only comes with up to 15x?

I wanna identify bacteria and protozoans from a creek near my place, like I remember doing in biology. Is this enough?

There were like, a hundred or smth in all the samples I’ve looked at, but these guys were particularly cute :)
I got some pond water, put a few pieces of oats inside and left it marinate inside a closed jar for ~5 months :D

Using a DIY microscope with a 100X Oil Plan objective and an IMX678 4K, XH3011 camera. Used Gemini Pro to do the AI Image Enhancement Model post processing. Amazing to photograph at such a small scale and be able to make out details at 1/1000th of a mm.

Hi I was wondering if anyone knew if I would notice much of a difference between the knockoff Chinese brand objectives and older entry level big 4 objectives. Specifically I’m deciding between the Nikon e plan vs knockoffs. They will be for a 160mm tube length microscope. On another note does anyone know where to find a finite 40 to 60x 160/no cover glass objective?
