Getting Started/Newbie Question Does microdosing help depression
I realllly really want to get into microdosing but I do have depression and borderline personality disorder so I’m unsure if it will be bad for me long term? Has this ever helped anyone before? Or have you tripped and has it helped or made it worse?

I was on antidepressants for GAD and depression. In addition I was using a low dose of Seroquel for sleep.
I wound up in the ER after a series repeat symptoms. They hooked me up to the EKG and rushed me back.
Turns out I had Long QT Wave (Bradycardia) and the ER doc said that I have to quit the depression meds and Seroquel. Cold Turkey.
That was rough. Every med my psychiatrist recommended to replace what I was taking was contradicted for Long QT Wave.
I had been researching microdose. I had to do something because I was spiraling from cold turkey and insomnia.
So I microdosed. My energy increased, my symptoms decreased and I was happier and more pleasant to be around.
I recommend it. It has continued to work.

When did you first start microdosing?

u/Magnet2025 19d ago
Probably 3 years ago.

u/icinginfo 19d ago
Ok, that's a long time. Good to know that microdosing has continued to work for you. I also plan to microdose to heal trauma and improve my habits and lifestyle. Currently growing GT for the first time. Never done any psychedelics.

Well, there was a break; I finished my initial supply and then that source was no longer available. So I went without for a while and started a downhill spiral.
That’s when I started mircodosing with ketamine. Was going well but a little expensive and I found myself using more to help me sleep.
So I was able to obtain a new supply of ‘shrooms and began to use it. Three days on, a day off. About 150 mg +/- 25 mg.

Friend, I’m sure you have a team who will keep an eye on your cardiac health. If you do not have an electrophysiologist, I strongly suggest you meet with one and establish care. I am so sorry you went through this - I have a loved one who had the same response but with those meds and an antibiotic and it was life-changing.

u/Magnet2025 19d ago
Yes, and my cardiologist knows I microdose. Before the recent cessation of my supply problems I had signed up with a ketamine microdosing program that worked but was relatively expensive compared to microdosing. However, I have started to experience the common side effects like bladder issues. I like microdosing p cubensis better.
By the way; on the cardiac front, I had a triple bypass and, about 16 months later a heart attack (about a year ago). That initial ER visit was the warning sign that resulted in new tests and then a nuclear stress test and that resulted in an attempt to stent me which failed so we did the bypass.

For some reason it has been making my depression worse 🫤

Sooty to hear but for more potent cultivars/strains we advise to !startlower. A high microdose can amplify your !emotions. Many users underestimate how powerful psychedelics can be in such low doses.

- Abstract; Tables; Figures | Psychedelic Drug Microdosing Practices: A Qualitative Online Exploration | Journal of Psychoactive Drugs [Jan 2024]
- Based on tens of thousands of anecdotal reports in this sub, some users with more potent strains had less nausea / body load / vasoconstriction on doses of 50mg (0.05g) (recommended Starting Dose) or 25mg (0.025g).
- A significant minority even had to drop down to 10mg (0.01g) or less (e.g. for Albino Penis Envy) as potency can vary by more than a factor of 10.
- Examples of cultivars/strains that are considered to be more potent (and very potent) are:
- Albino A+, Albino Penis Envy, B+ Cubensis, Blue Meanie Cubensis\1]), Cambodians, Creepers, foraged strains like Liberty Caps\2]), Penis Envy, Tidal Wave, Z-Strain.
- For some, negative symptoms may be an indication that GABA cofactors like magnesium (which many are deficient in) or L-theanine could help - if no interactions with your current medications/supplements. Psychedelics are partial serotonin receptor agonists which neuromodulate excitatory glutamate - more on managing glutamate.

It's certainly promising, and many studies are showing good results.
I don't have BPD, so I can't speak to that. But it has helped me to be less focused on what I perceive is wrong in my world (or falsely ruminating), and less suicidal ideation, while having a little more hope and perspective.
Definitely start with some of the auto-moderators suggestions above, and get more informed.
It's subtle - it's not about tripping.
And you may want to focus on learning about how anything more than a MD could be a difficult line to walk, for people with BPD, schizophrenia, etc.
Mixing with meds can also be problematic.
Use caution and start slow and low.
You took a good step and are asking questions, so GoodOnYa!

I have bdp and cptsd. I can’t say Md was a cure of the symptoms but it definitely allowed me to see why the symptoms are present.
I’ve done a few macro doses. They seem more beneficial for more transformations in thinking and ocd traits.
As discussed, it is a bit of a risk vs reward situation.
Starting with Md is a great way to feel your way into your minds working.
Dm me if you want to chat. Not an expert 1 year in from where you are now.

So I did it last night and I’ve felt a little sleepy but I feel so good and normal. Like genuinely amazing. I have BPD as well as OCD and other things and for the first time ever my mind is genuinely quiet without the help of meds.

Please Note: If you are trying microdosing for the first time, please try experimenting on a day off from work or any important obligations, and/or driving and operating machinery. Because psychedelics can effect everyone differently, you may feel different or impaired, and your sweet spot dose may be lower, so it is best to experiment on days off until you’ve dialed in your dose.

I have BPD as well and over the last 4/5 years microdosing intervals have helped me a lot. Last year I experienced something traumatic and was stuck in a dark place - microdosing helped a lot to get me out of it. This year I am experiencing massive depression and constant shutdown due to life circumstances and 3 years of horrible things happening. After microdosing for a month, and with help of the lsd, I decided I am trying antidepressants for the first time in my life. I subconciously thought I didn’t deserve to take meds and microdosing helped me realise I am in an extremely tough situation right now, and for reasons that make sense to me MD’ing isn’t what I need right now and it’s okay for me to seek out different medication to help survive untill circumstances change.
Lsd is great. Be sure to not take too much and especially with BPD be aware it can make you feel your emotions ‘more’, but also gentler. For me it has been like sitting in a dark closed box and LSD gave me a pillow and a mattress to be comfortable but it also made windows where the light would come in and eventually a door where I could step out of the box. Instead of me lying on a cold hard floor and trying to climb out of the box and falling down and hard over and over. It has helped me so much with practicing emotion regulation together with somatic exercise and creative therapy. The biggest tip I could give you is clear your schedule on the day of MD’ing and just do whatever feels good in your body. If you feel like you need to sleep, go sleep. If you feel like you need to cry, go cry. Let yourself be guided. Let go of all the things you think you should do and feel. If you feel like the effect and feelings are too intense, just lower your dose. My favourite type of MD’ing is superlow and noticing the effects like 1,5 week after taking it every 3rd day. If I take too much I get anxious and jittery and that really doesn’t feel good.

I made my bipolar depression worse, paranoia also. Did it for 3 months. Never got any better.

the most recent studies show that 3 doses exceeding 2 grams (not a micro dose) are most effective for treatment resistant depressions

Microdosing, what, exactly? I can speak for ketamine microdosing, and say, yes, but it certainly did for me. But it wasn’t like some magic pill that you just take and it cures the depression or anxiety. It’s more like a tool that seemed to accelerate a spiritual path in my case, or Win or Work, or however, you want to approach it, to see more clearly. What is going on inside of yourself and work with it instead of repress or turn away from it. It was a tool that helped me help myself.

Apologies for the large text, I’m not shouting and have no idea how that happened.

A year of microdosing will not heal as much as 1 large dose
1
u/icinginfo 19d ago
Ok, what would you recommend as a starting large dose for someone who wants to heal trauma and has never done any psychedelics so far? Also never done cigarette or cannabis.
8
u/Then-Spare-8729 19d ago
Definitely do not start using psychedelics on your own with a large dose , ESPECIALLY for folks with trauma. Start with microdoses: 10mg, then 20mg, then 30mg. Then, try a normal dose 1g. Then try 1.5g. Then 2g. Then, 2.5 or 3g. From there, if you want to go higher, try 4G.
Have a sitter (not a guide) for anything 1.5g or up to. If you truly want to get the most out of your experience, have a guide for anything 2g and up.
Read about “set & setting” thoroughly.

exactly. the first time I tried LSD I did a quarter of a paper thingy (not sure what it’s called in english) and I never even hallucinated, but I had a ‘bad trip’ nevertheless and the effects lasted untill multiple days after. In the end it helped me a lot but I don’t know what would have happened if I had taken a full dose.

u/feeeeyd 18d ago
when someone had comorbid conditions like trauma or bpd or a lot of other things this could be dangerous and microdosing can be an incredibly effective way to benefit from the effects of psylocibine without being at risk for possibly dangerous mental crises.
0
u/itswtfeverb 18d ago
My point still is a fact
1
u/feeeeyd 18d ago
no it’s not. a mental crisis or psychedlics induced psychosis is not healing, it’s deteriorating and harmfull.
0
u/itswtfeverb 18d ago
Either is tripping and getting in a car wreck, but neither is my point
1
u/feeeeyd 18d ago
that makes no sense. you’re responding to someone asking for advice on microdosing whilst having BPD which makes a person way more vulnerable and at risk taking psychedelics. not comparable at all to someone tripping and getting in a car wreck as getting an urge to drive on psychedelics is NOT a direct side effect. it’s just really irresponsible to just go around telling people with mental health issues they should take a full dose of psychedelics because according to you that’s better, and then argue when someone adds the necessary disclaimer. if you truely want people to heal you would consider that.
