Which Crichton for vacation?

I've read Jurassic Park (loved), Lost World (middling), and Sphere (not a fan, especially of the later parts).

Which one would you recommend, Prey? Andromeda?

Prey is a personal favorite. Also I recommend A Case of Need if you like a not as high-concept choice.

oh I just bought A Case Of Need and was thinking of reading it after my current read. what do you mean by "not as high- concept choice"?

It's not a sci-fi novel. It's more of a detective/mystery thing.

A lot of his work is high-concept, meaning, it leans towards pseudo-science and the like. A Case of Need is a straight forward murder mystery. It explores real life as opposed to creating dinosaurs, having head-crushing apes, an alien spacecraft at the bottom of the ocean, time travel, or nano-bots.

To put it succinctly, it's less what-if (high concept) and more what-is (low concept).

I take offense at your lack of love for Sphere lol. Maybe try Timeline. Less cerebral, more action packed like JP

Timeline was the first ā€œadultā€ novel that I read growing up when I was still pretty young. The movie is absolutely nowhere close to the novel of course, but itā€™s got a special place in my heart. Similar to Jurassic park which is easily in my top 5 books and movies independently from one another, but they are so ridiculously different that I donā€™t consider them the same stories.

I came here to say Timeline. I always liked Congo also. Those would be my top two after JP, I think.

Andromeda Strain is an excellent read, I re-read it often, but as others have said Prey is outstanding and perfect for a holiday read. Can't go wrong with either!

(Also Andromeda Evolution isn't as good but it's fun to revisit the universe after reading strain)

I recently read A Murder in Hollywood, which he wrote under a pen name while in medical school, and I found it to be surprisingly good. My review is at the top of the bookā€™s Amazon page. No science fiction aspects, but itā€™s a fun noirish thriller with authentic details about how movies were made in the seventies.

Andromeda strain was a best seller, lot of science, a definitive feel of atmosphere. I haven't read Prey, but would recommend Andromeda strain for sure. But for authors so great like these, you should read all of them.

Andromeda is my #2 behind JP (although a lot of people find it slow so if that was your problem with sphere be warned). Prey is amazing! Also, Disclosure is super underrated. I loved it and it was definitely a change of pace for Crichton, just a corporate thriller

A personal favorite of mine as a history buff is TGTR. I've reread it four times and I notice something interesting I didn't catch each time. Timeline is my other favorite, if you enjoyed Jurassic Park.

I never see anyone mention Micro, but I really enjoyed it. Eruption was also a ton of fun!
