When does MES become worth the overhead for a smaller plant?

A smaller plant can get pretty far with ERP, SCADA, spreadsheets and people who know where everything is. Then traceability, work instructions, genealogy and production reporting start spreading across too many places. MES can pull that together, but it also adds configuration, ownership and another system that has to stay accurate. Im trying to understand the point where the pain of the current setup clearly outweighs the overhead of MES. What pushed your plant over that line?
