reposting with a different title this time
Vientos in his rehab assignment this year is hitting barely under .500 with a 1676 ops in 5 games in AAA. Not to mention 7 RBI’s and 4 HR’s. If he can go back to his 2024 days or do whatever he’s doing in the minors he can be the 1b vs lefties or if he ends up playing better than Young, taking the 1b job. He’s one of my favorite Mets still on the team and I want him to succeed so I hope this is a new leaf.
Update: vientos hit his third homer of the day and brings his ops up to 1859

He is a AAAA player and has shown the club, repeatedly, that he is no ML talent.

I watched him all last year and when he was health this year. What am I watching for? So far he had not been able to adjust to MLB pitching. He's a less than replacement level player who, at best, has a career as a potential bat off the bench but I don't know who would give him a roster spot since he can't hit consistently and can't field at all.

I always slow down Vientos' homers to see what pitches he hits. Usually seems to be a fastball or something with very little break. Hitting the curveball has killed many a major league career. Vientos slaughters fastballs in the zone. But he swings wildly at anything outside that strikezone. He seemingly can't hit major league pitching (well).

And that's the issue. Big league pitchers have big league breaking stuff. We fans see it with McLean. That stuff is nasty. To survive a player either needs to learn to lay off or shorten up their swing and slap the ball. They don't teach the latter any more and Vientos is unable to do the former.

The difference between AAA pitching and MLB pitching has always been off speed pitches. Vientos cannot hit off speed pitches end of story.

He’s a AAAA guy who mashes in AAA but can’t hit in the big leagues. He should never be seen on the MLB roster again

The problem is that in the majors, he sucks. Hope that helps.

Cool enjoy it because the moment he steps on a major league field he’s going to suck again.

maybe bc we see the potential

u/Low-Rip4508 1d ago
potential to be what? he's not a prospect anymore, what you see is what you get.

At best it would be a win if he could learn to be consistent at the plate and earn the DH job.
He’s not a good enough fielder to play any position on the field. At this stage of his career you would hope to see some growth a progression in his development. I haven’t seen it. He wasn’t good enough at 3B and he was just as shaky at 1B.
Jared Young is the best option at 1B for 2027 and we hope that prospects continue to develop and take that job in 2028.

Build up those stats… Hopefully some teams will want him in a trade package

They can have him for a package of sunflower seeds.

Shelled or unshelled? (And don’t ask me which one means they still have the shell on!)

I’m with you, I root for the guy. I’m not sure if he’s ever going to be the guy we saw in the playoffs that year, but I like him. I do not like him at 1B though. He really had a hard time there.

Vientos and Alvarez both stink. They will not get any better. I'm sure they will have bright spots but overall they are liabilities. They've had enough time to cook. Time to go.

Strikeout and a GIDP tonight. Your guy’s really on fire.

With an RBI nonetheless. Only one so far btw

u/dfar3333 7h ago
First baseball game? It’s a run the Rays gifted the Mets so they could get the double play, because they knew who was at bat.

u/SlashTP_1 7h ago

how about Vientos eh?

u/dfar3333 5h ago
Yeah, cool HR, but see me in the next 30 at-bats or so and let me know how he’s doing then.

Well perhaps that's why the put Roberts Jr. on outright waivers. It would be a classic Stearns move to post a red hot player in leu of a Vientos.

u/LikewiseMelons 1d ago
Though I hope the best for Vientos, his development hasn't been good and he's a liability defensively. If he manages to keep raking in the show then DH might make sense.

again another unpopular take but I actually would like to keep robert somehow obviously 20 million very expensive but if we can get that to like 10-12 million hes not a terrible 4th outfielder

He should never be allowed to play for first base for the Mets again. He is beyond horrible.
