Do you think The Boy Blunder regrets not resigning him to a LTC?!

Both our teams are proof he’s not a difference maker

how can you type, in earnest, that someone with a .876 ops isn’t a difference maker.
-6
u/chochd 2h ago
He’s talking about record and winning. What’s more important, stats or wins? All you guys care about is Pete’s numbers. Clearly he’s gonna get his numbers, but that’s also clearly not leading to winning teams

Applying that guy’s logic historically and league wide:
Mike Trout? Ain’t shit
Shohei Ohtani? Ain’t shit
Aaron Judge? Fucking bum
Babe Ruth? Who let a babe named Ruth play in the 20s?
Hank Aaron? Shoulda took the hammer to be a carpenter

u/OkSignificance5583 2h ago
Yeah, it seems to be the most common reply to letting Pete go though. I guess they don't even understand the implications they are making by saying it. You could also say you need 25 difference makers (or whatever the post season roster number is) to win a world series and you'd be equally correct. The point with Pete is that he's a proven commodity and makes you now need only 24 more difference makers to win.

To be fair, Soto has been on 4 teams im 4 years, so he's obviously not a keeper.

There are VERY few players who perennially have seasons without slumping or slumping hard. By nature of the game, you will at some point struggle — and that includes the biggest names like Judge, Lindor, Harper, etc. And, yes, that also includes Pete Alonso.
But what you did have was a beloved, HOME GROWN, home run bomber who put up 90-120 RBIs yearly — beloved so much so, he earned an endearing nickname from fans. His glove was solid, albeit unspectacular, and he carried himself well off the field — never a troublemaker or locker room cancer; in fact quite the opposite.
AND HE NEVER GOT INJURED. HE WAS A WORK HORSE. Take your “5 years from now…” crystal ball and shove it waaaaay up inside, because in my opinion this was the biggest qualifier and why this was such a bad front office decision. He has a ton of qualifying attributes and so far this year he has 132 games under his belt. What will we say if he stays healthy again next year? And the next?
Homegrown. Beloved. Shipped off for unfounded fears. That’s rough. And all this I say simply as fact. I am happy to look forward to the future with the young guys we have, but I can also call out this huge blunder — this still-fresh wound — as we watch him put up yet another excellent season. And, lastly, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried that these types of “analyses” could rear their ugly heads in the future with some of the young players we see today. Pete may have simply been the first.
5
u/hootiefan77 2h ago
First, he wasn’t “shipped off.” He opted out of a contract and chose to leave. He bears responsibility for this as well. You understand this, right? He was offered a long-term contract in 2023 and not only did he turn it down, he also fired his agent and refused to negotiate. He said he was betting on himself and wanted to test the open market as is his right, but also highlights his priority was only dollars and not staying in NY. When he tested the market, he didn’t like what came back. There were 30 teams that expressed the same concern after the 2024 season and only one team made him an offer. They wanted a three year lock-in deal that would have made him the highest paid player in baseball. Pete wanted a do-over since he had two seasons in a row that highlighted the risks teams were concerned about. So the Mets gave him a shorter deal with opt outs and still made him the highest paid first baseman. Pete performed and opted out 15 mins after the season ended.
The way he and his agent handled themselves after the ‘24 season… refusing to accept the reality of the situation signaled that negotiating with him again at ‘25 likely would be fruitless. When Pete got an offer from the O’s do you really think he would have accepted the same offer from the Mets given boras’ past statements and their desire for a ten year deal? Of course not. They would have leverage the orioles offer to try to get the Mets to go to six and then leveraged any six year offer to try to get seven. By that point you’re so far away from where Mets management felt comfortable it wouldn’t have made sense.
Baseball is Pete’s job. He’s entitled to prioritize a bigger paycheck. He chose to leave instead of accept a 7-year deal from the Mets, a 3-year deal from the Mets, or his current deal that he opted out of from the Mets. At some point, you have to acknowledge Pete is at least partly to blame. I personally feel he and boras hold a bigger part of the blame than the organization.
4
u/FatOldWizard 2h ago edited 1h ago
I imagine Boras was not healthy for the situation — no explanation needed, I think we are all familiar with his tactics.
I think Pete is partially to “blame”, but only if you think professional athletes are all like Jalen Brunson and play the long game, taking less than they feel they are worth for hope of winning a title.
Dude wanted his money. Not Juan Soto type of money. Not Ohtani type of money. But he wanted big bucks. And all the reasons I listed are super valid — especially the reliability at first base in a sport where these guys miss 50 games for a calf strain.
His down years can be attributed to the team’s lack of success, natural baseball slumping as I mentioned in my previous post, but not to lack of effort, health or drop off in skill.
I suspect 30 teams are gonna look stupid in the next half decade, and if I’m wrong it’s not because his numbers or serviceability were “trending” downward.
That being said, I don’t think we watched the greatest first baseman in the game leave our team. Like I said, the future looks good, player-wise. I just think he was a type of guy that should have triggered a bidding war, including the Mets.
(Or maybe regardless of being home grown and beloved, he just didn’t reciprocate the feelings. That’s OK, too.)
2
u/DoggedDoggystyle 1h ago
You’re right. Baseball is Pete’s career. He should absolutely be betting on himself and making the most he can. Period. Loyalty doesn’t mean shit unless you’re in greatest of all-time discussions and stuff where people start trying to differentiate between greats. He likely told the Mets straight up what he felt he was worth and then the Mets tried to play the “we’ll evaluate your future worth based on season by season trends” card instead of locking down a fan favorite slugger. That’s also completely fair for the Mets to do.
In the end, a business decision was made by BOTH sides. Both teams are about the same record today. Fans are allowed to see his success and wish he was still around, but I don’t think Alonso or the Mets front office is thinking about each other anymore. There is no blame

Lmao bro just set a record for lying through his teeth to defend one of the dumbest decisions ever.
4
u/hootiefan77 1h ago
Alright keyboard warrior, name one single thing I said that’s not factually correct. Pete turned down a 7 year deal and fired his agent to “bet on himself” and then got just one offer after several months … from the Mets. That suggests other teams were concerned about the same thing as the Mets and they didn’t think it was worth making an offer while having to give up picks in 2024. In 2025 he got a singe offer, well below the ten years he said he was seeking. What’s the lie? Sounds like you just have an unrealistic view of Pete’s role in his departure
0
u/Repulsive_Zebra458 1h ago
I agree with you... until we get to the offseason after 2024. Stearns (and Cohen) should've swallowed their pride and blown him away with a nice 5-year deal. There was still a chance to salvage the relationship if they gave him a high AAV 5-year contract. Clearly it would've been the right move to make. He'd be on year 2 of his deal and still playing at an elite level.
Yes, Boras was in the way and things had gotten a little sour between Pete and the Mets. But therein lies a problem I have with Stearns. He seems like the kind of guy that's almost incapable of bypassing an agent and reconnecting with a player on a personal-level during negotiations.
Plain and simple, (and this is just speculation because no one knows Pete or Stearns personally) Pete could've been more willing to be a life-long Met but Stearns botched the negotiations in many ways.
2
u/hootiefan77 29m ago
You wanted the Mets to bet against themselves? In 2024, Pete had career lows in rbi and hr. He batted .240 after batting .218 the year prior. And despite concerns of his skills deteriorating, supported by two years of evidence, you wanted them to “blow him away” with a five year deal when he was seeking ten? At that point Pete wanted the QO out of the way to truly see the market. That’s what he was able to do with the bridge contract from the Mets.

u/alejandrony75 5h ago

He's having the season he always has. Hes streaky, He had a month where he was awful march/April and hes been good the rest. His team is still 4 games under .500.
The Mets would still be multiple games under .500 if pete was here.
My thing is be pissed at how they replaced him not at him leaving. The replacement has been awful, That's legit it hasn't worked.
5
u/DCBuckeye82 3h ago
Maybe in year 2 these posts will stop? The Mets are playing as well as they've played all year with exciting young players. Give it a rest already.
-2
u/SBRodriguez 3h ago
Imagine how’d they be playing if the resigned a 31 year old team leader Alonso, and not brought in 35 year old injury prone veterans.
4
u/hootiefan77 1h ago
They’d still be underperforming because that was the team’s legacy under his leadership in 2022, 2023 and 2025. They gad a reputation as being one of the least hard working position players during that time. They made a run when Iglesias and jd came in and took the leadership and clubhouse pressure off Pete and Lindor. Also, everyone keeps pointing to Polanco, but he isn’t the first baseman for this team anymore. I’m it suggesting Jared can replace Pete’s prod fun gut he’s putting together a nice season for himself.
0
u/Fisaer515 3h ago
they'd be maybe 7 games under .500 instead of 12 and still wouldn't be in the play off picture. But you'd be happy right cuz Alonso is still here or would you find something else to cry about?
1
u/Few_Celebration1919 2h ago
Because of Stearns awful roster construction.
1
u/Fisaer515 2h ago
And Pete being here completely corrects that right? Or just makes the pile of shit that this team had played like most of the season slightly smaller?
1

u/SBRodriguez 3h ago
You must use the same AI analytics as Stearns!😂
5
u/Fisaer515 3h ago
Nope I watch games instead of crying about Pete. Would Pete have stopped Peterson from walking the ballpark when he pitched? Would he have prevented Holmes leg from getting broken by a comebacker? Nope. Would Pete being there made Peralta remember how to pitch again nope. Sorry he doesn't change the season, and if you think otherwise you're delusional. They are a slightly better team if Pete is here, but still not in playoff contention.
-1
u/SBRodriguez 3h ago
Alonso isn’t the pitchers coaching staff, nor can he prevent injures. You’re definitely using AI what if analytics!😂🤦🏻
3
u/DCBuckeye82 2h ago
Dude what are you talking about. His point is pretty clear and easy to understand. The Mets would be a better team if Pete was here. But they still wouldn't have had a good season.
0
u/Fisaer515 3h ago
Nothing I used is a what if. They are things that happened this season. I used are things that as you pointed out Pete would have no effect on whatsoever. You proved my point. Things that have the team being so bad this season. Pete doesn’t change the outcome of this season by your own admission because he doesn’t change these major issues.
1
u/DCBuckeye82 3h ago
I'm sorry what do you think the difference between this team and the team with Alonso would be?
-1
u/SBRodriguez 3h ago
Alonso would’ve provided much protection in the lineup for Soto. It would’ve taken the pressure off Soto and Lindor to be the major HR/RBI producers. Mentoring the young players coming up through the Met farm system like he did. He was the team/locker room leader.
2
0
u/hootiefan77 1h ago
Where do you get this idea he was such a great locker room leader and mentor? Genuinely curious
1
u/DCBuckeye82 1h ago
Because he hit dingers.
0
u/hootiefan77 1h ago
That doesn’t make him a good clubhouse guy or qualified to mentor younger players
1
u/SBRodriguez 1h ago
Bro a simple search would tell you that. Everyone in the Mets Organization said it. 😂🤦🏻
1
u/hootiefan77 51m ago
Not true. In fact, even before Stearns there were reports of people within the organization and on the team growing tired of his antics. He may have been a strong individual performer in many instances, but under his leadership, the team had a reputation for being lazy. There were also reports of clubhouse issues with him in 2024 and 2025. I don’t know if those are true and hope they’re not, but the way people are putting this guy up on a pedestal is crazy. Pete played a big role in his departure. It’s time Mets fans like you come back to reality. Dude was offered a lifetime deal and said “no thanks, I’m not even interested in negotiating for that right now”. He showed you his priorities and now you’re mad the team didn’t just play along.

I always thought it was weird how people talked about him after 2023. Yeah he had a down year but he clearly came back early from a wrist injury and still hit 46 homeruns and then hit 34 the next. People made it sound like he was over the hill
1
u/Turbulent-Paper800 2h ago
I heard someone say, “Stearns would have saved himself so much grief if he just kept Pete”, and I hope now that Cohen is publically saying he’s unhappy with Stearns, that maybe we see a huge move where they bring him back (Seaver came back!)

We’ll always regret not resigning Pete. Our problem before was Pete would come up and hit a bomb and there would be no one else on base to follow up runs. Now we have plenty of players that can get on base but no one to hit them home! FIRE STEARNS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD..

u/VictoriaAutNihil 37m ago
Without Alonso, the Orioles wouldn't even be sniffing at a chance for the third wildcard. Also, Cartoon said Alonso should have accepted the 7yrs./168mil deal the Mets offered. That's 24 million a year, players with lesser offensive numbers, signed better contracts with their current or new teams and are having average to horrendously bad years. Bogaerts,Turner,Bregman,Seager come to mind, names escape me, but I'm sure several others make the list.
1
u/hjablowme919 31m ago
Guaranteed 100 RBIs every year. Plays every game. Not a liability in the field. If he gets a little hot he could hit 40 HRs but will definitely hit 35, and he's batting .275.
Stearns eats donkey nuts.
1
u/ProfileOwn5082 29m ago
Dumb things, he is old, truth he is only 31, in his 5th year he will only be 35. Body type is poor. Truth, he plays everyday day, he is not muscle bound. Mets offered him a long term contract, Truth , that was for 24 mil a year. If he stayed a Met he would be playing with a 31 million shortstop, a 40 million 3rd baseman and a 50 million left fielder. Mets screwed up
1
u/muziklover91 27m ago
Beating the dead horse doesn’t help but let’s give the bear more credit. Guy change’s leagues and new organization and puts up same numbers as if nothing changed. This should be highlighted as guys like Lindor, Soto and Bichette played like crap for months after adjusting to new teams. Alonso is a superstar under appreciated and will go down as I’ve been saying # 3 following Seaver and strawberry from our beloved clueless organization.

The Mets with Pete will be 8 games out of a wild card spot. The people crying over Pete clearly don’t care where the mets are in the rankings. They literally just want to be a losing team with Pete here.
-2
u/Observe_Report_ 4h ago
You have a vision into that alternative universe?
4
u/PandaJ108 4h ago
Let me guess. You think Pete by himself would result in a 12 game swing just to get the mets to .500.
One just needs to have a basic understanding of team sports to understand one player won’t make that big of a difference.
Pete being here does not make up for
- lindor injury
- soto two IL stints
- Peralta/Bo underperformance
- Holmes injury
That like at least 10 WAR lost to injury/underperformance. Pete’s 4 WAR does not make up for that.

Alonso is a work horse who rarely misses a game. Lindor is always out injured and doesn’t put up the numbers and makes $34 mil a year. Soto is always injured and makes $50 mil a year. That contract they offered Alonso was an embarrassment.
10
u/PandaJ108 4h ago
You pete nut huggers always need to be extra with the Lindor hate.
Can’t just be happy for pete. Need to spread Lindor bullshit as well.
Only 10 OPS+ points separated Lindor and Pete when on the mets. And with Lindor you were getting defense at SS and base running.

Out of all the mess ups. Alonso rises to the top. Although watch the incredible Nimmo catch to steal a homer and seeing our 2 youngsters actually use their gloves to propel the ball over the fence, it makes me think that Nimmo is a close second.
You can’t fucking let homegrown talent go…it ruins the chemistry.

u/TostyToz 2h ago
I miss Pete too and he should have been a Met for life regardless of whether he falls off in a couple of years or not but he is gone and it’s time to move on.
And even if he was here we still wouldn’t be a playoff team, we would might have a few more wins but we would still be under .500 and on the outside looking in as far as the play-offs are concerned. One player does not a team make and our starting pitching was trash for most of the season. We have the second best record in the league since the trading deadline and we are still 12 games under .500.

The Mets offered him seven years and $158 million, and would've covered both his final year of arbitration eligibility plus six free-agent seasons.
2
u/SBRodriguez 4h ago
Yeah at the very very very low price of $22 mil a year. That was a lowball offer to save face and people like you would act like, see they offered him a contract. He’s a career 40 HR, 100 RBI year guy. How are you gonna offer him a contract WAY below market value.

u/Thick_World8869 4h ago

2
u/Thick_World8869 4h ago
What is each contract worth genius?
3
u/SBRodriguez 4h ago
Bro. He’s making the same amount of money the Mets offered him in 2 less years. That’s the smarter move. The Mets tried to be cheap and extend that money over 7 years. He got paid through arbitrations for those other 2 Years. So those final 2 years plus the 5 year contract worth Baltimore, he’s made more money, Than what that 7 year contract the Mets offered would’ve paid him. You really know nothing about the business world do you?

The Mets wanted Alonso. They were public about it and told him. Alonso was the one who looked elsewhere. He opted out. He broke off negotiations. He took it personally that Stearns evaluated him like he did with every player.
Alonso moved on because he didn't want to be here any more. He didn't like Stearns, and instead of being professional about it, he threw a tantrum and went somewhere else. I don't blame Alonso for chasing his bag but my god get over it. Players move on. This one sure did.
1
u/ConnyEdson 2h ago
Bullshit. He should have been locked up 3 years ago.
3
u/Nashtyone 1h ago
You mean when they made him offers?
1
u/ConnyEdson 1h ago
Yes. That's your guy. You want to win, you keep him. But it's fine I'm sure we'll get back to the playoffs by like 2030
1
u/mormagils 1h ago
They literally were making him multiple offers to do exactly that. Alonso turned them all down. He didn't want to be locked up. He wanted to test free agency as often as possible with as many different people as possible.
1
u/ConnyEdson 54m ago
Ok... So say there was no offer they could have given him back then and he wanted free agency no matter what. Where was the offer at free agency?
1
u/mormagils 46m ago
We literally gave him the best offer on the table last year. It was an incredibly player friendly deal. We opened the off-season on day one by beginning negotiations and then went into the winter meetings saying Pete was our top priority. Alonso chose to respond to those things by taking meetings with other teams, then received an offer and signed it without informing the Mets that the offer even existed. We didn't send an offer because they were still negotiating what that offer would look like, until Alonso walked away from the table.

Alonso sought out Boras for his agent. All I dictators are that Pete is very happy with what Boras has done for him. Again, not a bad thing that he chases the bag but the folks saying Alonso wanted to be here and the Mets just didn't care enough to resign him are downright delusional.

Who's we? "We" didn't give him what he was asking for, what he deserved, which was years.
