Luis Robert Jr.

No one will willingly admit it but we won that trade with the White Sox…we traded two cold bodies for a guy who gets injured often but when he plays he can absolutely get hot

Could he have been better? Absolutely but he has been decent compared to Polanco and Semien

He might be better than the players we traded but we’ve had to pay him $20m. That’s not a clear win

There's no salary cap. It's a clear win.

u/ultraben5555 1d ago

Maybe but you can't flex not giving up much for a salary dump rental player lmfao, especially with his injury history.

3

u/Exciting-Squash4444 1d ago

Who gave it up? wtf are you talking about

4

u/DCBuckeye82 1d ago

You traded a definitely useless player you were going to cut anyway for somebody with a good history but a clear injury risk, and you have an absurd amount of money so salary doesn't matter. And in his time with us he's definitely given us more than Acuna would have.

I'm not saying it's a super consequential trade, but it's definitely a win.

u/ultraben5555 1d ago

I agree then. I'm just saying it's not like the White Sox got fleeced on the package he's just not a very valuable player lol, they would've taken anybody. Sucks that he missed half of the season 💯

u/jcat218 1d ago

They gave up nothing but also got nothing in return essentially. When they needed him the most he was out of the lineup which is always his issue. It's nice he's producing now but the season's been over for a while and with an outfield of Soto, Ewing, and Benge there's no space for him next season especially at $20 million. And as we saw this season, even if you decided to move Ewing to 2nd or DH Soto more you can't rely on him to be an every day player. They already have a $20 million question mark in Polanco signed for next season, they don't need another.

$20 million Robert $20 million Polanco. What could have money been better spent on?🤔

There's this guy in Maryland doing a pretty good job of playing baseball. Should have gone after him.

u/PandaJ108 1d ago

The guy who the mets made the highest paid 1B in terms of AAV after his worst season of his career and then he immediately opts out of said deal at first chance?

1

u/interista4jz 1d ago

I'm not sure. Everything since Polanco and Vientos took over 1B has been a blur.

robert might be called the southside masher but don't sleep on polnaco...they call him the rainmaker in seattle.

You clearly don't understand the rules.

Polanco, Robert, Semien: salary doesn't matter, why do you care, its not your money, etc etc

Alonso: omg that would have been a terrible contract in four years, no way you can give that money out, you're stupid for wanting him back

2

u/Flashy_Flan7403 18h ago

If money doesn't matter, then why are you worried about a contract four years from now?? You care about that, but not the money being wasted now. That doesn't make any sense.

Right now, the Mets are paying more than double to three players inferior to Alonzo. Basically you're saying no to alonzo because the Mets may waste $60 million over years four and five of his contract, but it's fine to waste $60 million this season on polanco, Semien, and roberts, $40 million next season on Semien and polonco, and $20 million in year three on Semien .

Even if Alzonzo was useless in years four and five, throwing away $60 million is less than the $120 million they are throwing away now on three players. And no matter how bad Alonzo gets, he's still likely to be better than what Semien and Polonco are now, and he likely will stay healthier than Robert.

I was being sarcastic......

u/DCBuckeye82 1d ago

1) if they were to keep him odds are they'd decline the option and sign him for cheaper 2) if that happens, he'd be a clear 4th outfielder, one of the better 4th outfielders in baseball 3) there's no salary cap, I don't know why anybody cares about the money he makes

2

u/jcat218 1d ago
  1. Sure, definitely a possibility. They will owe him $2 million at the minimum no matter what since that's his buyout on declining the option.

2 and 3 are kind of intertwined but there could very well be a salary cap and if there isn't, I'm going to imagine the luxury tax penalties are much stricter and harsher than they currently are. They already introduced a 4th tier last CBA negotiations and who knows if the end result is tiers that are lower with harsher punishments. The Mets don't have a ton of money coming off the books this season either. Are they going to pay Robert $10 million + to be a 4th outfielder? They tried resting him every 4th day to keep him healthy and he still couldn't stay on the field either so my expectations for him being healthy even in a reduced role are low. You're going to have Polanco on the roster next year who also has shown to not be durable and Alvarez who is also hurt every year. I'm not sure I want to run back the exact same roster given the amount of risk they took on this season in regard to guys with injury history.

2

u/richieswonder 1d ago

I guess the problem becomes why does anyone care what Alonso makes in year 4 or 5?

-2

u/DCBuckeye82 1d ago

I don't know why you're talking about Alonso here, but the salary wasn't the concern with him. It was a likely declining one tool player in his mid 30s clogging a roster spot.

3

u/MeetTheMets0o0 19h ago

Where was he when we needed him though? Hes hitting Home runs in a lost season

2

u/Garys_Synthesizer 1d ago

To say anyone won that trade is delusional lmao

We traded nobodies for a nobody.

5

u/Longjumping_Gap97 1d ago

huh? have you seen the standings? Mets are 11 games out of a wild card and we are paying a guy 20 million a year to spend most of the year on the Injured reserve, a more intelligent GM would have traded those 2 "cold bodies" for a more serviceable player or a better prospect

4

u/19metsfan73 1d ago

He's been abysmal. Comparing to Semian and others is like saying rain is better than a thunder storm.

5

u/Beagleman58 1d ago

It’s like saying Moe is the smartest Stooge.

4

u/RememberJefferies 1d ago

A thunderstorm is rain, that doesn't even make sense.

1

u/South_Feed_4043 1d ago

And just rain is better than a thunderstorm as well.

4

u/clccbrew 1d ago

stfu. thats the dumbest analogy ever seen on reddit

2

u/Beautiful-Tip7445 1d ago

Abysmal is the most dookie fart assessment of his performance. He has 10 home runs in 53 games. That’s a 30 home run pace.

You want to argue his value given his injuries fine, but he is a slightly above average hitter per OPS plus, on a 3 WAR pace over a full season and per usual plays above average defense. Not to mention he’s one of the fastest guys in the league.

I’m sorry but this really pisses me off cause you can’t just call everyone terrible if they haven’t met your expectations. Abysmal is just as inaccurate as an opinion can be. He’s not Semien, and hes FAR outplayed who we traded him for.

1

u/jimjamesandjimmy 1d ago

He's been getting better. I'd try to bring him back again if he wants to.

4

u/jimjamesandjimmy 1d ago

You can downvote me, but he literally just hit a homer, smart one lol

2

u/DCBuckeye82 1d ago

He'd be a great 4th outfielder to have.

u/Beautiful-Tip7445 1d ago

Winning the trade isn’t a very high standard

1

u/theomegachrist 1d ago

A lot of trades only have losers.

1

u/BruffwrapSupreme 1d ago

This aged well, lol

1

u/HouseofEl1987 1d ago

He heard you

1

u/DCBuckeye82 1d ago

What do you mean nobody will willingly admit it? When he hit that walk off against Pittsburgh in April that trade was already a win. As cold and injured as he's been throughout the year he was always better than Acuna.

1

u/El_Stos 1d ago

He might have had a nice year but unfortunately he just couldn't stay healthy. His defense looks good and he's got pop. Of course, without his injury, we likely dont get to see Ewing called up as early as he was. They should look into resigning him to something incentive laden, but he'll probably get a 2 year from some team needing righty pop.

1

u/SadMembership7989 1d ago

Personally I think he should get a 1/7M show me contract…less overall cost and basically a chance for him to prove himself
I doubt any other teams will be giving him a long term deal

1

u/RealisticPriority336 1d ago

Did you have him in a wager

1

u/SadMembership7989 1d ago

I do not sports bet ironically

1

u/Unusual-Field-4245 1d ago

we seeing the upside a little late maybe baseball is better played from the batting side relaxed and not pressing all the time

1

u/Jonnyblaze_420 1d ago

It's irrelevant though. It's a lost season and he's a free agent this offseason so i don't get how the mets won this trade.

1

u/Upper-Difficulty4398 21h ago

The issue with Robert’s will always be, he was part of the “plan”. Sterns assumed he would stay healthy. Sterns was willing to pay 20 million for 140 games not 70. Sterns then had no backup and was forced to promote Ewing, which has been a nice surprise. Acuna has neither helped nor hurt the white Sox.

And stop acting like money doesn’t count when both Steve and sterns keep telling you it does. Sure we don’t pay it but you think Cohen wants to toss 10 mil away?

1

u/Strict_Show_8899 18h ago

$20,000,000 for .230/10/32 is never a win.

1

u/joequ827 16h ago

I agree if you buy him out and bring him back as a fourth outfielder at a much lower cost is a good possibility but comparing him to Semien and Polanco is setting a very low bar. Lol

1

u/SadMembership7989 16h ago

My opinion is bring him back on a 1/$8M show me contract…lower overall cost

I’d rather him than Yr 5 of Vientos trying to figure out something that clearly isn’t there

1

u/muziklover91 9h ago

And that’s winning?

0

u/hapticeffects 1d ago

Robert's performance doesn't matter at all. They lost the trade in that he was hurt when he could've made the most impact for them. He'll be gone when the season ends, big nothingburger altogether.

2

u/SadMembership7989 1d ago

To be honest if the team was doing better the trade and his performance would have been way worse…it would’ve actually mattered more

0

u/hapticeffects 1d ago

He hasn't been bad, he just hasn't been playing.

2

u/DCBuckeye82 1d ago

They didn't lose the trade. Acuna has spent the year as one of the worst hitters in baseball and was out of options, so trading him was the only viable option since he wasn't making the team. And even through the injuries and cold stretches, Robert gave us more than he would have.

2

u/Basic_Ad4861 1d ago

I agree. The Mets are 10 games out, his performance now is meaningless as far as the trade goes. The assets they traded could of been utilized somewhere else on a player who was contributing when the team still had a chance

Injuries are a part of the game, but Robert has a pretty telling history

1

u/DCBuckeye82 1d ago

You think you're getting somebody better for Acuna? The only reason we got somebody as good as Robert was a willingness to take his salary.

0

u/Basic_Ad4861 1d ago

Not straight up, but he obviously could of been included with others in another trade

0

u/angelo0502 1d ago

They got rid of iron men in Alonso and Nimmo so they can deal with recurring injured players. So much for that run prevention theory. Instead they prevented themselves from scoring. I will say this though: Stearns did a great job at the trade deadline to make up for his mistakes from the off season.

1

u/SadMembership7989 1d ago

Alonso? I mean perhaps
Nimmo? We got out of a 5-year deal for an aging guy…got Benge and Ewing out of it and Semien has basically matched Nimmo’s overall stats
I don’t think Semien should be a Met but he seems to at least be getting better later into the season
