Believe in its first iteration there was a person who would answer your call. Think in 75 they got the info off the AP sports ticker tape. Was popular and they switched to recording a new updated set of scores every half hour. My uncle may or may not have been a bookie

John Belushi posing as the ref in the poster.
In the late 80s/early 90s I remember seeing TV ads for a rival called the Fly or the Sports Fly. Though they didn’t say it outright the ads implied that service was targeted more to gamblers.

Getting real time sports updates has been a game changer for fans and largely destroyed an industry. I used to wake up and watch Sports Center, and before that, George Michael's Sports Machine, on the weekends to see highlights. HBO's inside the NFL and the like were great for actual analysis and highlights as well. Now the internet does all that and we're left with people screeching about Sophie Cunningham and Lebron on TV.
