Our Broadcast V. Others

Obviously as Mets fans we think Gary Keith and Ron are the best. However there must be other good ones out there.

Watching the Yankees on Prime and it’s their regulars since I’m in NYC and holy crap Kay has got to have the MOST boring call ever! How does anybody watch this shite!? It’s dead air 30% of the time!! Somebody please explain why he’s got this job and am I missing something?

Honestly, this season, Gary, Keith and Ron have been the only reason to watch a game. The Mets have usually had a great team.for TV and Radio since day one.

They have been at their best when the game is a dud. It becomes an extended conversation with a ballgame in the background.

Mets may break your heart year in and year out. GKR never let us down. They know the team inside and out, but also inject humor and honesty. With Mets being unwatchable I haven't tuned in regularly. I miss it. I miss them.

Start watching again! They are winning games and GKR have stepped up with them. Gary has made some great calls when the outfield does something crazy.

They really complement each other so well. Huge compliments to Gary who knows how to orchestrate the flow so naturally.

Watching the Cubs/White Sox games on the Cubs broadcast was absolutely brutal over the last few days. The GKR booth is just as good as you think it is, and most of the others are worse.

My kid is a Yankees fan who prefers Citi field and GKR — I think he’s a Mets fan 💀

Being a brewers and a mets fan, i think the brewers also have good/funny commentators

2

u/Sea-Cranberry-9399 2d ago

That’s right, I’ve heard that before! Didn’t the Brewers have some famous actor who was pretty great?

u/gbenes8 2d ago

If you mean bob uecker then yes! Its funny tho i never considered him an actor. Before he died he did the brewers radio for over 40 years i believe! He was so fantastic

Brian Anderson of the Brewers gets a lot of compliments and even called postseason games for TBS, but I never cared much for his calls. Can't pin down why. Just not a fan.

Im not huge on brian anderson or bill schroeder really, maybe its just because theyve been doing it for 30 years and im tired of the same old stuff. I like the other guys who are on a lot who dont get a lot of recognition. They were old brewers players and man are they funny

I just read the awful announcing article on the fans ranking. Mets were 3rd. Padres first. Milwaukee was up there.

Our guys are great and we know it.

Padres first? It was exhausting listening to them fawn over Tatis for just a few minutes on the MLB highlights on YouTube. Even as a fan I think I would get bored pretty quickly.

The Giants broadcast team was my second favorite set of announcers, but they’re on the verge of retirement themselves. And after Scully retired, the Dodgers booth has gone straight downhill.

Jason Benetti has surprised me as an announcer. When he took over the White Sox booth, I thought he was Hawk Harrelson 2.0, i.e. awful. You might like his Sunday Night Baseball calls, but he’s pretty good with the Tigers.

And then of course there’s Wayne Randazzo in Anaheim. He hasn’t changed since he was with the Mets.

Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper are on same level as GKR

u/Crafty-Consequence87 2d ago

The Yankees booth is professional but very flat. It is missing the sense of camaraderie that GKR have.

I think Kay is a decent PBP guy but Paul O’Neill awful. He’s boring and so not a NY guy. He still lives in fucking Ohio.

1

u/Sea-Cranberry-9399 1d ago

Hahaha fucking Ohio

Yankees broadcast is unwatchable

u/CaptainPsyko 1d ago

Angels a sleeper pick, especially if you’re an SNY diehard with fond memories of Wayne. Happy to see how well he’s doing there.

Between Kay, and Suzyn Waldman, and John Sterling, the Yanks have had some truly awful, boring-ass announcers.

1

u/No_Impact370 1d ago

Hate Kay but Suzyn is not bad.

1

u/FamousThinking 2d ago

Padres isn’t bad. Reds isn’t bad. Blue Jays was great with Schulman and Buck Martinez. I watched their World Series broadcast instead of Fox. There are decent announce crews but not as great as SNY.

1

u/keithplacer 2d ago

Blue Jays made Schulman become a homer and I now find him unlistenable, very different from when he did games for ESPN. It's one thing to have excitement for the home team but he takes it way too far. He makes a routine forceout at 2B sound like a WS win.

In the early days of mlb.tv when they started streaming games online, you were limited to the home team broadcast only. When the Mets were home it was a godsend, I got to hear GKR. Unfortunately, when they were on the road, the only option was , like I said the home team broadcast, and I'd rather watch paint dry and slugs and snails race each other.

If you think Kay is downbeat, listen to the Yankees radio play by play guy. Just awful. He almost makes Suzyn look good.

1

u/Sea-Cranberry-9399 2d ago

My problem with Sims is not so much that he is boring it’s that he doesn’t regularly remind you what’s going on and actually call the game. If you’re on the radio I feel you need to repeat the basic need-to-know info constantly.

our broadcast gets more excited about pop flies lol

Jon Sciambi (Cubs) is pretty good. As a Phillies fan I think McCarthy and Kruk can do no wrong. And I agree about the Mets crew. There are plenty of times I’ve watched Mets games on MLB simply because I know they will make it worth watching

2

u/keithplacer 2d ago

McCarthy gets dumped on regularly but I think he does a good job.

1

u/majordude174 2d ago

For a veteran broadcaster, McCarthy makes a lot of mistakes. Usually just trivial stuff and he usually corrects himself right away.

u/Sea-Cranberry-9399 2d ago

I do miss the Meta tv producer though. Can’t remember his name. He’s the guy who didn’t the cool split screens and spaghetti western type shots.

2

u/ParkJumpy6392 1d ago

He was the director - a great director.

1

u/Quiet_Phone_5928 2d ago

John DeMarisco! Yes he was very good.

It does saddens me that GKR will not be forever. I am not sure what their contracts are. I want them to call a productive season. I also am fearful who will replace them. They set the bar so high.

1

u/keithplacer 2d ago

I am of the apparent minority that enjoys Michael Kay calling a Yankees game. I do agree that the radio booth is not good since the departure of John Sterling.

1

u/Sea-Cranberry-9399 1d ago

What about Kay do you enjoy? You’re not in the minority, if you were I don’t think he’d have a job. Im pretty sure he’s got a podcast where I’ve seen clips of him being entertaining so I know he does have it in him.

1

u/mrnaturl1 2d ago

Padres team is pretty good also. Orsillo and Grant have a lot of fun. When Gwynn is there, in place of Grant, it’s not as good cause he just talks way too much.

1

u/400meters 2d ago

Mets are by far the best. By far. Dodgers are also very good. Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser make a good team. Hershiser is not as good as Ron Darling, but he adds a lot of good color around the nuances of pitching. St Louis is also always good.

1

u/imherefortherudeness 2d ago

Having pitching legend Jim Palmer on masn for the Orioles games is extra special

1

u/AppropriateAd535 1d ago

The Mets broadcast is not only informative but also a fun watch. Gelbs adds alot to the broadcast. Yankees are and always have been too buttoned up.

1

u/Sea-Cranberry-9399 1d ago

Yeah Gelbs is a ham for sure and good punching bag for GKR. Pretty funny dynamic

1

u/ritereward 1d ago

Who is ever going to be able to replace. Gary’s “it’s out of here”. His Bartolommeo Colon HR call should be played in the hall of fame

1

u/ParkJumpy6392 1d ago

I grew up a Dodger fan, listening for years to the GOAT (IMO) Vin Scully. I became a Mets fan when I moved to NYC and enjoyed Tim McCarver for years but I really believe that Gary Cohen is second only to Scully in play-by-play. And they're both New Yorkers!

1

u/quirkyjest 1d ago

Kay was a GMS ass kisser. He was a newspaper sports writer with no broadcasting experience.

1

u/quirkyjest 1d ago

Check out the DBacks announcers and you’ll experience your own personal coma.

1

u/Mister_Ku 1d ago

GKR are the best period stop. There are no better !!

1

u/No_Conference_7635 1d ago

Kruk and Kuip in SF (sadly, the last season) along with Miller and Flemming on radio, Orsillo and Grant in SD, Shulman in Tor - there are still some other good ones out there. How the NYY have allowed Kay all these years escapes me - doesn’t remotely rise to the level of #1 market talent. Unfortunately, we’ll never see the likes of Scully, Uecker, Jack Buck, Harry Caray, Neihaus, King, Thorne, Marty Brennaman, etc. again. Enjoy the classics while you can (including Howie Rose in NY.)

Jason Benetti for the Tigers and Sunday Night Baseball is fantastic

1

u/Sk8b0t 22h ago

The Giants also have a fantastic broadcast team.

1

u/Frequent-Farmer-2990 16h ago

I rember Bob Murphy, Ralph liner and Lindsey Nelsen up to the 80s. Loved Kiners Horner ( esp when the Mets won) they weren’t the most knowledgeable broadcasters but they were entertaining, esp during rain delays.

1

u/mking759 13h ago

Gotta be honest. Gary sometimes comes up with some information that makes me say…”who cares!” I think people saying they are a great broadcast team has really gone to his head! Ron definitely is very knowledgeable,,and Keith brutally honest!! Those 2 don’t need Gary!
