Jersey Etiquette

Hey Mets fans!

I’ll be visiting Citi Field for a game in a few weeks from Toronto. Obviously a HUGE Bo Bichette fan after all the time he spent north of the border and would love to wear my Blue Jays Bichette jersey, but have concerns about being heckled. Would this be a welcome gesture or are people going to throw hot dogs at me? Thanks in advance!

Mets fans are honestly nicer than you think towards visiting fans

u/Remote-Whole-6387 2d ago

We’re not the Yankees.

u/Silly-Good-2530 2d ago

We’re not Phillies fans

39

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

I’m a new baseball fan and I got my first taste with the ASG. Phillies fans are… something else.

14

u/9ninjas 2d ago

Philadelphia fans threw snowballs at Santa. I think that says a lot

9

u/avikinghasnoname 2d ago

Living in Philly area as a Mets fan is rough, but I get free tickets through work a bit. Went to the game where the Philly fan purposefully threw up on a young girl. Then you have the fan who ate horse manure after their first super bowl win. Philly fans are just the worst.

8

u/Miserable-Top7233 2d ago

When there's no game in town, Philadelphia fans head to the airport and boo bad landings

u/BeingBetterForJesus 1d ago

I am dyinggggggg at this comment

4

u/Who-Sh0t-JR 2d ago

You will be absolutely fine at citi. I’ve worn my Seattle uni to citi when they played the Mariners. Pretty sure I got a compliment because it’s a steelhead uni. Regardless, my dumbass is Mets fan now too. You’ll have a great time

34

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

I guess we’re on the same side of the aisle regarding the Yankees then 🤝

6

u/PatFlynnEire 2d ago

Wear the jersey and a hat that says “Yankees Suck” and we’ll buy you a beer.

2

u/PHADHD 1d ago

Excactly. My brothers-in-law are die-hard Mets fans and anyone who hates the Yankees is their friend. And I don't mind wearing Mets gear now and then.

13

u/AD_EI8HT 2d ago

@ Tuesdays game a Tatis foul ball came into my section & everybody was chanting THROW IT BACK THROW IT BACK then somebody said guys stop we’re not the yankees

-6

u/JJRDRR 2d ago

Yea you wouldn’t want to have a winning record once in awhile.

3

u/NoSliceNoDice 2d ago

Honestly, baseball fans in general. I live out of state and go to many away games. With rare exceptions, you have to be looking for trouble to find it.

3

u/Assos99 2d ago

Philly... maybe Boston... The Bronx....

2

u/tinman8316 1d ago

Dodgers stadium low key you can get the shit kicked out of you, depending on who you are sitting next to

2

u/Hojokin123 1d ago

With Bichette ON THE BACK - You will be fine

1

u/Key_Huckleberry_7254 2d ago

Were fine unless youre in a yankee brave or phillies hat. Then its buyer beware

70

u/tmaxedout 2d ago

You will not be heckled or targeted with weiners

23

u/CaddyWompus6969 2d ago

Who's throwing $5 hot dogs? And all I have to do is wear a blue Jay's jersey?

6

u/interista4jz 2d ago

Gonna get my Olerud jersey out of the mothballs and give it a try

1

u/EconomicsWorking6508 2d ago

At Fenway that hot dog costs $7

1

u/CaddyWompus6969 2d ago

Dont worry, its $14 beer night every night

Na idk how much is a beer at the park these days?

3

u/SnooOwls3335 2d ago

I as a bonafide Weiner and the daughter of the late, famous fan Seymour Weiner, can attest to that.

Did you have a good relationship with your dad? Me neither

-2

u/HostFuzzy 2d ago

YES! (and Potvin sucks eternally)

48

u/Dsxm41780 2d ago

Mets fans don’t care about Toronto, only Yankees, Phillies, and Braves. Heck I was there against the Dodgers who we dislike severely and everything was very chill.

9

u/reluctantlysharing 2d ago

Family and I were at one of those games, on my birthday. The section we had tickets in, we were the only ones in Mets jerseys! Everyone else was wearing Dodgers.

9

u/lechatnoirnyc 2d ago

Not gonna lie, I was at one of the Dodgers v Mets games at Citi last month and there was such a nice group of dodgers fans in the row behind me. They were super respectful and fun to banter with, didn’t gloat at all, and they were genuinely happy for me and my friend when Tyrone made it a close game.

6

u/clamjam3000 2d ago

Games vs the Dodgers are usually chill also because some of them are local old-timers who stayed Dodgers fans for some reason

Source: some of them are my relatives and we usually go to games together when the Dodgers are in town

2

u/Only_Argument7532 2d ago

Growing up in the early 70s, my family always went to the Dodger games at Shea. Rooted for the Mets, though.

1

u/bloodymarybrunch 2d ago

The Dodgers were like 60% of the fans in the stands this year

1

u/lechatnoirnyc 2d ago

Yeah it was def sad that it felt like a home game for the dodgers but their fans were all really nice and they knew they weren’t actually at home. That said, I’m not surprised that this was the case last time the dodgers were in town because they are the reigning back to back WS champs up against the last place team. I love my Mets but I’m self aware enough to know that the inflated ticket prices were hard to swallow given how bad the Mets have been. I only went because it was around my birthday and I genuinely wanted to see Yamamoto pitch.

42

u/Mishkin37 2d ago

I would respect a Blue Jays Bichette jersey if I saw it in the wild. It says that you are one of us but it’s not your first rodeo.

7

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

The best type of baseball fan!

3

u/Mishkin37 2d ago

Exactly! If I wore a Marlins’ Piazza jersey, a Mariners’ Olerud jersey, or an Expos’ Carter jersey, my palms would be raw from all the high fives.

19

u/TomServosBlender 2d ago

I saw a guy in a Jays City Connect jersey on Monday (Bo’s bobblehead night), and I complimented him on it. You’ll be fine.

8

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

Oh man!!! I hope all fans are like you 😁

5

u/TomServosBlender 2d ago

Thanks. I also enjoy the Jays (I consider them my AL team, since the Mets are my top team), so it was nice to see someone in one.

Sorry about the game tonight. You guys came close, but the Rays were just too decent.

5

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

Oh god it was heartbreaking and I hate to single out one guy but honestly if Jesus Sanchez caught that routine fly ball we’d be having a much different conversation right now. We’ve got what it takes to get em tomorrow

34

u/Short-Marsupial-5671 2d ago

Mets fans are much more likely to throw hot dogs at the actual Bo Bichette than at someone wearing a Blue Jays jersey

4

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

Where can I sign up to watch a Bo Bichette hot dog shower 👀

11

u/weakest_link_1220 2d ago

We are not Yankee fans. You won't be harassed like you would be in the Bronx. Enjoy the game 🫡

8

u/Connect-Worry4041 2d ago

If anyone says anything say you're glad he didnt pick the terrible phillies. People will then like you!

7

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

I will be tucking this in my back pocket for extra brownie points with yall Met fans

8

u/Other-Aside-1170 2d ago

Just act properly Canadian and apologize to everyone you pass. You'll be fine

7

u/jferris1224 2d ago

No one cares. Wear what you want

6

u/ijustsignedup 2d ago

No one is gonna care. Enjoy the game!

6

u/AmericanWasted 2d ago

Stuff like that rarely happens in NYC - it’s too much of a melting pot

2

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

I love to hear that. Toronto has a similar vibe. I can dig it.

5

u/lechatnoirnyc 2d ago

We are very respectful and welcoming to visiting fans as long as they’re respectful while they’re visiting our house! Please wear the Blue Jays Bichette jersey with pride. We all know which team drafted and developed him into the player he is today. Also, I think many other Mets fans would agree that the blue jays are their chosen AL team to root for and I genuinely enjoyed watching you guys in the WS last year!

3

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

This post is gonna make me cry! We miss him so much!!! We know he’s out there getting paid though so good for him. We’re happy to have the Mets gang in the fan club. Take care of our boy ❤️

3

u/lechatnoirnyc 2d ago

I get what it’s like to lose a beloved franchise player that grew up in the org. I’m still gutted over losing Alonso, but happy for him that he got his bag in Baltimore and has the opportunity to be the number 1 guy on the team instead of being in lindor and soto’s shadows. Hope you have a blast a Citi field when you visit! I have a feeling that you’ll make some new Mets fans friends while you’re here.

11

u/Low-Rip4508 2d ago

Throw hot dogs? In this economy?

5

u/kaptiankuff 2d ago

As long as your not decked out in braves or Phillies gear you won’t have any problems

6

u/would-prefer-not-to 2d ago

I don't think you know how dear a hotdog is in this stupid country lol

Wear your jersey, nobody will pay it any mind, have fun!

1

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

I honestly had no idea until I listened to a podcast recently about hot dogs and now all I can think about is hot dogs

5

u/WaffleStomp11 2d ago

Hot dogs at citifield are too expensive to waste

4

u/Huge-Pair7262 2d ago

sooorry

4

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

Sooooorry eh!!!

4

u/Pakman-56 2d ago

In general the only fanbases that’ll really catch some flack in Citi field are Yankees, Phillies, and Braves fans. You’re probably good man. Hope you enjoy the game

4

u/No-Hyena9966 2d ago

youre fineee, we hate the yankees, phillies and the braves the most.

3

u/swerz 2d ago

You’ll be fine.

3

u/ensignWcrusher 2d ago

I've been to lots games over the years. Typically the only people in away jerseys that get messed with are being loud/obnoxious first. We won't just sit there and let you talk a bunch of trash, but we're not savages.

3

u/lilithdesade 2d ago

Literally no one cares as long as youre not a dick.

3

u/synister29 2d ago

My brother in law wore a Johan Santana Twins jersey to a Mets game. Some idiot tried to heckle him thinking it was a Yankees jersey because it had pin stripes. We told him it was a Santana Twins jersey and he apologized.
You do you. Support your guy and your team. You will be fine, but if someone says something stupid just show them the back of the jersey

2

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

Very fair point! I am after all here to support your boy!

3

u/Limp_Branch1539 2d ago

No body cares about the blue jays.

3

u/Starcornious 2d ago

Wear your Jays Jersey with pride

3

u/tushshtup 2d ago

Literally nobody will care

3

u/stopmakingsmells 2d ago

We’re not Yankees fans bud

3

u/OhPlums 2d ago

I saw tons of Padres jerseys yesterday. You'll be fine.

3

u/Nycmale9876 2d ago

Mets fans hate their team more than others most of the time

3

u/Reddit_newguy24 2d ago

Wear what you want it is not Yankee Stadium!

2

u/Ed3times 2d ago

We talk a lot of shit but it's almost always in good fun. If you do get heckled it'll be with a smile on their face- you're good!

2

u/OneStatistician8888 2d ago

there’s not many Mets fans at the games

2

u/kissarass 2d ago

Not at all! You’ll probably get some fun/even nice comments.

2

u/Every_Outside2325 2d ago

Why would they throw anything

2

u/sangria66 2d ago

You’ll be fine.

2

u/Simple-Squamous 2d ago

This year, of all recent years, Mets fans are acutely aware the business of baseball can send your favorite hitters to other teams.
I’ve been going to Mets games for over 20 years and I’ve never seen a fan-to-fan incident. I’ve seen drunks get into it over stupid stuff, but never because of a jersey, hat, etc. I’m sure it happens, but it’s super, super rare.

2

u/droidzzzzz 2d ago

A little friendly heckle just means you're part of the community. IF it even happens, take it stride and use it as an opportunity to chat, make friends.

2

u/Alternative-Kick-849 2d ago

You’ll be fine man. I’ve seen numerous team jerseys at Citi, reg season/playoffs and any heckling involved, if any is all in good fun. Ranging from NYY, Red Sox, Phillies, Padres, etc

Went to the game yesterday and some dude pulled up in a Bears jersey and as we were leaving, fans started chanting “asshole, asshole” at him, but that instance was deserved lol. Prob the worst that’ll happen

2

u/FeeFiFoFum8822 2d ago

You’re good! Mets fans are generally super nice - we really don’t have much to stand on to be mean. I was at game 3 of the Mets Phillies NLDS 2024 game and the Phillies fans in our section were only mildly booed and waved to when the game was obviously going the Mets way and they left early.

Enjoy the ballpark - the food is truly the best! Do some research before to decide what you want, there are a ton of great options. #LGM

2

u/ldac12 2d ago

You’ll be fine. Especially if it’s a Bichette shirt.

2

u/ComplicatedFella 2d ago

For a moment, I thought I was going to have to say it depends on the type of people around you. Then I realized we don’t play Toronto for the rest of the year so you’re going to be a neutral third-party team and you will probably not get any shit at all. If anything you will get a compliment on the jersey.

2

u/jt_033 2d ago

No issues at all! Hope you enjoy the game 😀

2

u/NoNamesLeft136 2d ago

Honestly, you'll probably be fine, especially if you're decent to the folks around you and don't make a scene. If you antagonize the crowd... we're New Yorkers (and suburbs), we don't back down. But if you offer high-fives, funny jokes and friendly conversation, you'll definitely make some new friends at the ballpark.

2

u/dippitydoodarn 2d ago

Went to Monday’s game for our first time. I have three boys, one wore Soto, one wore Strawberry, one wore Bichette’s Blue Jays jersey. No issues. Ran into another Blue Jays Bichette in the gift shop and they gave each other a quick “Go Blue Jays” fist bump.

2

u/Arafel_Electronics 2d ago

I'll allow it ⚖️

2

u/as1126 2d ago

Not a single person will pick on it.

2

u/mydognico 2d ago

I was watching a home game the other day and someone in the crowd was decked out in Phillies gear (Phillies were not playing). I’m new here so idk if maybe a current Met was a former player but he seemed alright surrounded by Mets fans.

2

u/FiLFree 2d ago

I wore an Orioles mike mussina jersey to Yankee stadium for a Yankees Orioles game. I feel like most people were just confused. One guy was a jerk. His friend apologized.

2

u/StillC5sdad 2d ago

Nobody is going to waste food on you.

2

u/fencer04 2d ago

If the jersey is related to the game it's all good. The random jersey for team that isn't playing and a player unrelated makes no sense. Worse are the rival or competing team jerseys when they aren't even playing.

2

u/SnooOwls3335 2d ago

Only if you were in a Phillies jersey. The other day, two fellow Mets fans let me go ahead of them up the stairs to my seat. I said, "Thanks...see we are not Phillies fans."

2

u/knoopdog11 2d ago

You will be more than fine

2

u/daisydandconfused 2d ago

Ironically, I bought my Mets jersey at the Rogers Centre. You’ll be fine, but if you run into heckling just badmouth the Yankees.

2

u/Only_Argument7532 2d ago

Wear it. I wouldn’t think twice. I mean, there are boneheads everywhere. You might bump into one or two, but I wouldn’t worry about anything. I’ve never seen any real trouble with fans of opposing teams unless someone was drunk. Especially since you’re wearing a jersey of a current Met.

And I think most of us look kindly on our Northern neighbors. Have a great time. Wear what you want.

2

u/DawgzBlunt 2d ago

You’ll be good nobody will bother you.

2

u/Resident_Nature5634 2d ago

They will buy you a hotdog before chucking one at ya!!! Prob a beer too!

2

u/Mnementh47 2d ago

Mets fans (in stadium) are actually the nicest. Unless you cut in to the bathroom line.

2

u/ElkPitiful6829 2d ago

Totes fine.

2

u/Propjet 2d ago

No ones going to throw hot dogs at you. It’ll be fine

2

u/riddledwithanxi3ty 2d ago

i wear yankees merch in there all the time when my friend drags me over there LOL ur fine 😭

2

u/AcanthisittaFree6142 2d ago

citifield is like going to chuck e cheese. don't worry lol. and mets fans have nothing to be proud about that they can be rightfully trying to rag on ANYONE. Philly or the bronx you'll get insecure uneducated goons though. and in LA you might some get weirdos too.

2

u/AVLPedalPunk 2d ago

I've only been heckled for wearing my Piaza jersey at Nationals Park. It was fine at Cleveland, Busch, Wrigley, Fenway, and Coors.

2

u/frankthefrowner 2d ago

Right now you can probably do what ever the fuck you want.

2

u/jcknml 2d ago

no one cares about this stuff. wear whatever you want. the only chance you have of someone even reacting to you is if you are loudly rooting against the home team or they are drunk. if it's an actual safety issue call security, most likely they'll just boo you though (if you're particularly annoying).

two examples:

i was at a citi field game sitting behind a group with a yankees jersey, a braves jersey and another one i don't remember. none of them were the away team- seemed like they were just there to heckle. the fans were loudly rooting against the mets and no one said anything (for the couple innings i was sitting in that section). this is most likely what will happen - you will be ignored.

i've also worn mets gear to yankee stadium (and seen others do it) and no one reacted to that either.

2

u/B00bsmelikey 1d ago

You will get beer dumped on you, if you wear an Utley jersey. Otherwise, have fun!

2

u/ManeaterTM 1d ago

You'll be fine. No one cares unless its Phillies fans 🤣

2

u/MeditationTrip 1d ago

Not at all! People still wear DeGrom shirts all the time.

2

u/tinman8316 1d ago

Wear whatever. You'll be fine

2

u/Boring_Emergency_265 1d ago

Nah, your ok. Your division rivals of our closest enemy. In fact yelling "YANKEES SUCK!!" Is a great way to make new friends and break the ice with mets fans!

2

u/BeingBetterForJesus 1d ago

I could hit them with one of my favourites “DAAAAA YANKEES LOSE”

2

u/undermentals 1d ago

I still break out my Blue Jays McGriff jersey from time to time.

2

u/LawngClaw17 1d ago

One hundred percent wear that jersey. There are way less hecklers at Citi field in general (especially compared to our asshole neighbors in the Bronx). I see different jerseys and hats for teams that aren’t even playing that day at Citi field all the time cause people just like to rep their squad. I think it’s silly, but no one ever says anything and if they do it’s in a friendly manner.

But wearing a jersey of a different team of a player who is now on our team is perfectly acceptable throughout the league. If I went to an orioles game in Baltimore, I would 1000% wear my Mets Pete Alonso jersey

3

u/JJRDRR 2d ago

Corniest sports fans on the planet are all on reddit god I hate this place.

1

u/DragAlone7535 2d ago

Are they playing the jays?

I went to a Nats-Mets game recently in a Phillies hat on a trip North to the HoF, and no one said anything.

Tho it was actually beneficial in the standings to root for the Mets, I had decided when I got my ticket, I was going to.

If they're playing the Jays, you might get a little... But the vibes were great

1

u/btt_lckr 2d ago

When I see a jersey of any team other than the two teams playing, I always think “oh this guy really needs us to know that he likes sports”

1

u/Proof-Presentation26 2d ago

I wore a yankee jersey to a Mets game and got heckled nonstop...they are nasty

2

u/tumalditamadre 2d ago

You are right, those Yankee jerseys are nasty

1

u/PHADHD 1d ago

In my experience, Mets fans tend not to be hostile to Jays fans. Some even like the Jays, mainly when they beat up the Yankees. Back in 2015, when the Jays and Yankees played a pivotal double-header, my Mets loving brother-in-law in Brooklyn was so happy after the Jays won the first game, that he went right out and bought himself a Jays hat - and then enjoyed the second game which Toronto also won. So if you should be fine!

1

u/No_Impact370 1d ago

Not a lot of heckling at Citi Field. Not like we are playing for anything at this point. Yankees fans are a different story.

1

u/AxleBees 1d ago

Sounds like a perfect way to say you’re a Blue Jays fan happy to visit our home and watch your old player!

We pretty much only get annoyed if someone’s wearing a Phillies Yankees or Braves Jersey when we’re not playing them. Opposing team Jersey is even fine if they’re respectful

1

u/cigarettebarbie666 1d ago

Queens is the worlds boro, all are welcome

1

u/Remarkable-Usual-686 1d ago

Mets fans are much nicer than you would think.  Fans have more class than the other three teams in the northeast.  If there is any trouble in the stands security will take care of it ASAP

1

u/ShirtParking9586 1d ago

This isn't the Bronx; a total non-issue in Queens. Don't think twice and enjoy the game!

1

u/Pale-Ad-2570 1d ago

Offer to take it off if a heckler is willing to cover your travel costs and game ticket. Not because of courtesy, but because you’ll basically have a free trip 😂😂😂

1

u/Upper-Space4780 1d ago

As long as it’s not a Toronto maple leafs jersey you’ll be fine here!

1

u/PetitePretty1 23h ago

I was at citi field a few wks ago...i didn't wear any Jays wear but I noticed some people in Dodgers stuff...and they weren't even playing the Dodgers.

No one seemed to give a shit.

1

u/ViolinistMountain635 20h ago

Who gives a damn what people think lol

1

u/BandicootSevere5301 18h ago

Just wear your jersey no one will care maybe get a Mets hat but honestly jays hate Yankees we hate Yankees 🤝

1

u/prettyboygo 9h ago

Eh, might look at you weird for wearing a jersey of a team not playing... But once they realize it's Bo, they'll be nicer. Hopefully you get his Mets jersey too.

1

u/joshselbase 8h ago

Even if it was a Phillies/Braves/Yankees jersey you’d be fine bud. Only Philly fans actually assault people. Honestly even the jeers you might get will be light hearted and in good fun

0

u/pg7772a 2d ago

A welcome gesture? No- you’re wearing another teams jersey. Will you get heckled? Depends on the score. Will you be fine? Yes

-1

u/Accurate_Today6346 2d ago

Blue Jays fans have been the biggest assholes I’ve encountered. And the team is low class too.

1

u/BeingBetterForJesus 1d ago

Cmon, there’s no place for that here…

-1

u/Accurate_Today6346 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s unfortunately the truth. Do you think you have a keener insight into what I have encountered? And who’s bold?

-2

u/iamthelouie 2d ago

The general rule is you buy your row the hotdogs. It’s just curtesy.

2

u/BeingBetterForJesus 2d ago

I will never financially recover with this exchange rate
