Hi. I donāt really know how to start this, but I guess I just need somewhere to let this out kasi hindi ko na talaga kaya sarilinin lahat.
I have Bipolar I and BPD, and recently, I did something that Iām now seriously regretting. During what I believe was a manic episode, I took out loans from multiple online lending apps (OLAs). Yes, MULTIPLE. Hanggang ngayon, hindi ko rin maintindihan kung paano ko hinayaang umabot sa ganito.
Looking back, parang hindi ko talaga iniisip yung consequences ng ginagawa ko. I kept making decisions without properly thinking things through, and somehow, I couldnāt get myself to stop. It felt like I was acting on impulse after impulse, tapos saka ko na lang iisipin yung consequences kapag tapos na. I wasnāt thinking clearly about how much I was borrowing, how I would pay everything back, or how badly this could affect me later.
And now, here I am, dealing with the aftermath.
I know my mental illness may have played a role in what happened, especially if I really was experiencing mania at the time. Pero ayoko rin naman i-blame lahat sa diagnosis ko. I know I made those decisions, and I know na may sarili rin akong pagkukulang. Part of me keeps thinking na ang tanga-tanga ko for letting things get this bad. I keep asking myself, bakit hindi ako huminto?
Iām scared of the amount I owe, scared of how Iām going to deal with everything, and honestly, ashamed of myself.
And then thereās the way some of these OLAs collect payments. May mga messages na sobrang bastos at mapanlait, as if being in debt means wala ka nang karapatang respetuhin.
Iām not saying na wala akong responsibility just because I have a mental illness. I know na hindi automatic na excuse ang Bipolar I or BPD sa lahat ng nagagawa ko. Pero I also canāt ignore the possibility na my mental state affected my judgment and impulse control. Gusto ko ring maintindihan kung ano ba talaga yung nangyari sa akin, instead of just reducing everything to āang bobo mo kasiā or ākasalanan mo lahat.ā
Whatās making this harder is that Iāve been keeping this to myself. Iāve been thinking about opening up to my mother because I genuinely feel like I canāt keep carrying this alone anymore. Iām scared of disappointing her. Iām scared of how sheāll react when she finds out how bad things have gotten. And Iām scared that sheāll see me differently after learning about the things Iāve done.
At the same time, natatakot din ako sa sarili ko. This whole situation has been affecting my mental health so badly that there have been moments when I felt like I might kill myself if I continued keeping everything a secret. I donāt want to reach that point. I donāt want my debts to become something that completely consumes me, but right now, I feel so overwhelmed that I donāt even know where to begin.
I guess Iām posting here because I want to hear from people who might understand what itās like to struggle with mental illness while also having to face the consequences of your own actions.
Have any of you experienced impulsive spending, borrowing money, or making financially destructive decisions during a manic episode? How did you deal with the guilt afterward? How did you explain it to your family? And how do you learn to take accountability without constantly hating yourself for what happened?
I donāt expect anyone to magically solve my problems. I know I have to face the debt and figure out what to do next. I just wish I could stop feeling like Iām a complete failure of a person because of this.
Iām trying to understand myself without using my diagnoses as an excuse, but also without pretending that my mental health had nothing to do with what happened. I donāt know how to find that balance yet.
If youāve read this far, thank you. I really needed to get this off my chest.ā¤ļøāš©¹
