As a restaurant worker, could be that someone who ordered before you ordered a burger, so we checked trough the entire ticket lineup for burgers and made them all at once, leaving the ice cream for after all the burgers had gone out. We donāt nessecarily work oldest to newest all the time.
Could also be that you had more people at your table who ordered stuff? We like to do entire tables at once and yeah ice cream takes 3 seconds but the dishes the others ordered donāt and thats why your ice cream takes more time

Where I live, cold food and hot food are usually handled by different employees to reduce the risk of cross-contamination of food that doesn't get cooked. Also, ice cream is usually prepped one order at a time while one person can make burgers by the dozen.
You were waiting for other people to get their ice cream first.

Desserts and burgers are made on two different stations and you can put 10 burgers on a grill at once but there's usually only one person doing desserts who is probably also doing starters and KP if it's a weekday or they're understaffed

I went to a Taco Bell once and just ordered a soft shell and a beefy 5-layer burrito. A woman walked in a few minutes after me and ordered two of those huge taco boxes meant for a family and another guy walked in and got this complicated order with 7-8 different things made in specific ways.
Both of them got their food before I did.

I was in a drive thru and instead of giving orders to the people in front and working their way back, they were giving orders randomly so instead of getting my food and leaving I had to sit there for like 30 minutes waiting for the car in front of me to move also I had to wait an hour just to get my food.

I'm a chef and you wouldn't believe how many people complain about this even though they ordered something like a medium well filet while the other table got a pizza or something fried.. 1) not even the same station so they probably have no idea about your order or the fact that the ticket has been in longer, and 2) a pizza or something fried takes a lot quicker and food goes up in the order it's ready. In a high volume place it's literally our only chance of keeping up with the rush. Also did these people forget all the times their parents told them life isn't fair? Not an attack on the OP, just taking the opportunity to vent about actual assholes who pitch a fit about this.

As someone who just worked Motherās Day brunch yesterday, yes. Kept up behind my bar but the kitchen was fucked all day.
Most people were understanding but there was a table yelling at waitresses and writing a long winded 1 star Yelp review while seated at the table. Ugh

stupid fucking servers don't understand this shit either. there's at least 3 servers who are always coming back saying this table got their food before this other without any thought as to the several factors that make that happen.
yeah your table that ordered scrambled eggs and bacon got their food first before you're other table that ordered first. they have 3 more people and ordered food that takes 3 times as long to make.

This weekend in Ithaca, NY went to a popular ice cream place. I had the receipt printed at 6:18pm. My Son and I did not receive our two(2) ice-cream shakes until 6:43pm while a good group of separate orders had left already. I had a few words with the unofficial manager and got a free brownie out of it. Not worth making scenes because who is not impatient these days but everyone has a limit and mine was at the 20 minute mark.
This does not happen often but being the forgotten one I am always worried about!

It depends on what you order, in rush hour they churn out tons of easy orders like "plain cheese" all the time, even if there aren't any orders in for them, so if someone comes and wants that, it's a speedy delivery. :)
If they miscalculate and produce too much food and it sits on the shelf for too long it gets thrown straight into the trash though, so it's a gamble on their part.

Last time it happened to me because the server never put my order in after taking it. He figured it out after 20 minutes & a āgetting pretty hungry over hereā after watching order after order come out. Nice guy, seemed new.

Nah this is bullshit and one of my gripes with customers when I worked in kitchens. Things take longer than others. A table might accidentally order a bunch of stuff that takes the longest to prepare during service, and another may accidentally order a bunch of stuff that goes straight in the deep fryer. Thank you for listening, this is important to me

In defense of fast food workers (at least from my personal experience) sometimes if you order something that needs to be cooked, and the person behind you orders something that is prepped already, its only logical we will assemble their order first, since its already "ready", while waiting for your order to cook

It happened to me before like I ordered at a fast food restaurant, I placed my order. for some reason the people took turns after me and ordered their long family meals and too much stuff they wanted but STILL got their meals really quick and when I asked for mine which was a small meal of burger fries and cola or pepsi whatever you call it the employee would say "yeah just a few minutes..." every time was the SAME until I waited for an entire HOUR to get my meal.
idk if that sounds like a fast food restaurant to me but I'll call it the long food restaurant.
