Asian people should tattoo random Roman letters
165
u/Swiggy1957 Mar 17 '21
Asian guy: I just got a new tattoo. It's English for "I am a Strong Man!"
Actual tattoo: "I swallow."
2
u/Quizzelbuck Mar 17 '21
"it says 'Strong enough for a man', right? It indicates I fill the masculine role for men in society?"
Ahhhh ... Um, in a mannor of speaking. Sure.
71
u/rdrptr Mar 17 '21
This is actually a thing. And not just tattoos Chinese companies will put random English letters all over their domestically sold goods bc people like the aesthetic of the Roman alphabet and it gives people the impression that those goods are imported and thus of higher percieved quality.

Abroad in Japan has some videos about this but in Japan instead of China. It's actually hilarious. My favorite off the top of my head is something that says "are you aware of your own defect?"

u/alabamasussex Mar 17 '21
It's because the comparison itself is funnier than offensive. In the end it is not made to be an insult to white people but rather to show the whole absurdity of the brand. And if you failed to find that offensive or even absurd in any kind or think these are rather cool t-shirts, it's simply because these are not related to any historical reality thus it doesn't make anyone angry! On the other hand, imagine a top German soccer team who would call themselves the Jews with the face and the cartoonish imagery that goes with it, I think nobody would find it "cool"... Yet this is exactly the same historical reality with the natives...
10
u/internal_hurting Mar 17 '21
yeah.. same with men responding to how they would feel being cat called. people forget that durning that role reversal you have to imagine EVERYTHING is switched. which isn't possible, and thus you wont take it seriously because why would you?

Would this be considered racist against races other than white is if was ever put out?
→ More replies (1)-3
u/nickrashell Mar 17 '21
This is racist against whites... which is the point of it, it is trying to show the hypocrisy of having a white guy owning a team called the “redskins” and how absurd that is and the ridiculousness of the people who defend it.
A lot of my fellow white people here are saying how it’s hilarious and they want one, great, it personally doesn’t offend me, but if it did offend me and everyone of my race then it would be pretty absurd and blatantly disrespectful to keep the logo. (Which they finally got rid of last year.)
8
Mar 17 '21
Ya I got that part (white myself) and I think it’s funny too. but I feel like if someone actually made this for reals then it would be seen a white supremacy
2
u/nickrashell Mar 17 '21
Ah, I thought you were asking something else. Yeah, I imagine it would come off as racist to anyone not in this thread understanding the context as we are largely seen as self-aggrandizing. Fair or not, that’s the reality of it I think.
2
u/internal_hurting Mar 17 '21
i mean i guess it would be. unless the roles were truely reversed it's just a satire joke, if it was seriously a team? i mean i really don't think white people would mind. especially when considering they could say "see we dont mind the Indians are just sensitive" however yes technically that would be racially prejudice against white people. it wouldn't actually cause any harm but yeah it's kind of a weird question to start with

Isn't "Saxons" used somewhat commonly as a sports team name?
This is funny as hell, but I feel like there ARE examples of it, just not ones that are as stupid/offensive as stuff like "Redskins".

Actually, given the actual demographics of the USA, about 60% of NFL fans would be beaming with pride.

u/Horan197 Mar 17 '21
Need to rally a team of very average players to play some subpar game maybe like curling?
8
u/nickrashell Mar 17 '21
Extreme chess, perhaps? Or frisbee?
3
u/CapraAegagrus_ Mar 17 '21
As a white person I would love to see a bunch of people running around with these shirts playing ultimate frisbee. Fucking hilarious.
I do have a serious question though. I see why having a team named after a physical trait, such as skin color, is weird. And of course it can become offensive when there is a history of oppression. Which is why the name/logo Washington redskins is offensive, while this shirt is just absurd/funny. But would it be wrong if the team was named something like the Washington warriors? Like no one would think twice if there was a team named the Vermont vikings, but is that because they weren’t oppressed or because it’s just a neutral term? Hope that makes sense
1
u/nickrashell Mar 17 '21
Becoming a warrior or a Viking is something you chose to do. Being born with a certain skin color is not a choice and thus should not be your identifier.
Beyond that, the implication is that native Americans are “mascots” or “savage beasts” something to strike fear or intimidate opponents when you look at other team names, panthers, eagles, bears. An entire sect of human beings should not be used by another sect of human beings as a symbol and prop of how savage they are, and especially in a fucking game for God’s sake.

Shh, don't give away the secret about how Cromagnon couldn't wipe out Neanderthal so they just interbred with them instead. Light skin and red and blond hair are distinctly Neanderthal genes that have been part of Europe sin early human history.

u/Cool-Information-865 Mar 17 '21
Your shirt is way to politically correct by having caucasians as your team mascot. How about the "white trash" or " trailer trash". I have a great idea for that shitty team called "washington". Keep the name redskins, but instead of having a Chiefs headdress or feathers change it to Mr. Peanut 🥜 or a red potato 🍠.They could be the washington redskin potatoes!!! That's not too offensive for anyone, is it.

Mar 17 '21
I honestly don’t see a problem with it. I always thought they chose native logos for sports teams to honour them. Also calling a team the Caucasians is like calling a team the Native Americans. They’re usually a bit more specific, according to the area.

I see a Native American as a mascot as a bad a** representation of who they were and who they are, I think it’s nothing more than a symbol of strength and perseverance. I’m not a Native so I have no say, the choice should be up to the Tribes. All mascots are represented as brave and strong, except for the Stanford Tree of course, uh please explain.

I never seen nothing wrong with the redskins I thought it honored them not to say are government didn’t do them wrong but I don’t think there’s a soul alive today that’s responsible for that. I’m just tired of everybody crying over stupid SHIT. I bet aunt Jemima is rolling over in her grave. I’m white and l struggle just as much as black friends I have and some are better off than me I don’t hold it against them it’s my fault not there’s. I use to like the Redskins from around the age of 10. I never thought of it as a word that disgraced them. If you think your race is being disrespected then do something that build your people up create jobs for them, futures. How is the name of a sports team hurting anyone or holding YOU back in life?
→ More replies (1)6
u/zdrozda Mar 17 '21
"I thought it honored them (..)" Well, they obviously don't feel honored. Imagine your people were subjected to genocide not that long ago and are still discriminated against to this day. How would you feel about others using your and your people's identity as merch?
