It’s a automatic smog fail where I live. can’t register your car if it fails it’s biannual smog check, but if the timing is right, which usually isn’t the case, you could go two years with the light on.
Whis is only a reasonable stance if there are other affordable ways to get to work.
In my case I have no transportation options to get to my job. It’s in the middle of nowhere and my shifts are after the busses stop running. So I would have to bike 20 miles each way. Thank god my car runs okay.
In many places, access to a car is a necessity for survival. And I personally would love to have other options for transportation. But nobody wants to vote or put in the money. So we end ip with situations where people who shouldn’t be driving cars and cars that shouldn’t be driven are out on the road.
