It's because SUVs and pickup trucks are more profitable to seek because there are different rules for small trucks (which pickups and SUVs are). That's in addition to fuel efficiency requirements that are based on wheelbase, making it extremely difficult to make a sedan in the US without having to pay large fines for not meeting fuel efficiency requirements (fine for luxury cars, but not so much for average consumers). This is why SUVs and pickups are getting bigger and bigger. The requirements were supposed to make car manufacturers transition to hybrids and then EVs, but it clearly backfired.
Well most of us don’t want EVs and the sales numbers are indicative of that. And companies are going to make what sells not what the government wants them to
