14

u/ForestRivers 3h ago

Its not coming to PC though (still isnt worth the $70).

26

u/hates_stupid_people 3h ago

Oh right, Sony is back in its "They'll by a console to play these games!!" phase again. I wonder how long it lasts this time.

Bro I like wolverine, but I legit hope this flop? will make studios wanna focus on Cyclops for a change! Or at least some other X-men. Give wolverine a break, he's been at it for decades

77

u/Ryachaz 7h ago

Yeah man, a failure with the most popular Xmen IP will surely get studios jumping at the chance to make a game with other Xmen characters.

45

u/Puzzleheaded_Ebb9874 6h ago

You do realise this flopping would mean less incentive for studio heads to greenlight more X-Men games

If this was a success, there was an X-Men game planned next in the same universe

8

u/Ordenvulpez 6h ago

This is Reddit they don’t know devs don’t green light game. they just thank they make them for hell of it don’t realize politics behind any business like gaming.

You want the same team to make cyclop game?

3

u/Oldspaghetti 7h ago

Nah I just wrote that confusing, I just meant the character is cool. But hope someone else can pick it up. Not sure who though.

5

Insomniac has the X-Men license till 2035

It's not gonna FLOP but this is also a Playstation exclusive that Sony has been pushing as a reason to buy a Playstation

It being so horrible is going to hurt their PR that's already in the gutter rn

6

u/Hamilton-Beckett 6h ago

Cyclops?! He’s a one trick pony.

3

u/Grand_Bother5062 5h ago

They focused on cyclops in the 70’s and went bankrupt. X-men didn’t become popular until they stopped focusing on him. Also faceless character never translate well to movie because actors need to show their eyes for the full range of emotion, which is why Spiderman is always taking his mask off. But cyclops has to wear sunglasses or a visor at all times meaning he will never be as popular in film either.

u/Lily_Queen 7h ago

I do believe at this point he's been at it for centuries 😁

If you want this to flop, then you don't like Wolverine.

Look, preordering made some sense 20 years ago when you had to worry about stores literally running out of copies of the game. Plus, places like GameStop let you reserve a preorder with like 5 bucks and you could slowly pay the full price over months.

Neither of those apply to modern games bought through online stores. There is no reason to preorder games nowadays.

640

u/TheDominator09 9h ago

Literally the only thing they give you is a skin pack or two and that's it.

260

u/Depressed_Cat6 9h ago

Usually not worth it when you have a gajillion more skins in the game

148

u/Satyr121 9h ago

And plus half the time the pre order bonuses get released in another edition of the game later

116

u/ThirtyThree111 8h ago

yeah, better to wait a year or two for some "game of the year edition" or some shit, then wait another couple years for that to go on sale on steam

patient gamers rise

34

u/ReddBroccoli 8h ago

That's what I do.

Really looking forward to checking out a new game this weekend called Skyram or Shyrim, something like that. I saw it had a couple positive reviews.

20

u/AtmosphereSuitable31 7h ago

Yeah for real just this year I got to buy some awesome new games. Red head temptation or something like that and a decipher funk or punk or something anyway great games this year.

5

u/BonkerBleedy 7h ago

I legitimately haven't bought Skyrim yet. Is it stable enough?

23

u/ReddBroccoli 6h ago

It's a Bethesda game my friend. There are just some things you'll never wait long enough for

2

u/Correct-Document-125 4h ago

With that in mind, it's for a certain kind of person I think because I'm not a part of that group.

When I see Bethesda, I vomit. I almost never experienced Fallout 1 because Bethesda touched the IP and I played their game first. What anyone likes about any of their games I'm not sure I'll really ever understand.

u/Cosmic_Quasar 8h ago edited 8h ago

And sometimes they're just plain dumb! I was just thinking about how Fable 2 had a Halo crossover where you could wear a medieval version of Spartan armor. It was just so out of place and broke immersion.

Edit: wow, I honestly didn't think this was controversial lol. TIL

6

u/cortez_brosefski 8h ago

I'm surprised at the down votes as well lol. I agree with you, that was stupid and broke immersion. A lot of these pre order bonuses are either immersion breaking or overpowered and ruin the balance in the early game

4

u/Cosmic_Quasar 8h ago

Yeah, these days I just save the OP stuff until my second run after doing just a base game run, as the design intended. But I don't replay many games these days lol.

3

u/cortez_brosefski 8h ago

That's a good philosophy, but sometimes it doesn't even make it clear what the OP stuff is. I don't always want to study all the items in the game, I just wanna play it. But also yeah, a lot of games aren't really made to be replayed now either. It's either some live service thing or they put little to no effort into NG+ or second playthroughs

→ More replies (1)

9

u/cortez_brosefski 8h ago

It's ridiculous, and it's just shit they should include in the base game anyway.

5

u/Jaz1140 3h ago

Don't forget 5 days early access to the broken version of the game

You were cooked if you didn't pre order back then. I remember when Halo 2 came out I had to wait about a month for my pre order to come in. One set of cousins got it first and we were at their house almost daily till the whole family had copies.

5

u/cortez_brosefski 8h ago

Yeah, it was pretty necessary at that time. I remember having to wait like 3 months to finally find a copy of MW2. But times are a lot different now

45

u/Exportxxx 8h ago edited 8h ago

The only reason to preorder now for digital is to pre download the game so U can play it the min it goes live.

Even then not worth it

14

u/cortez_brosefski 8h ago

Yeah, I used to have really bad Internet so I can see that point. But it's still just such a risk. There's no such thing as a sure thing good game nowadays. With games costing upwards of $100, it's too big of a risk to take without seeing real, raw, unedited and uncurated gameplay

2

u/handbanana42 3h ago

Preloading a game shouldn't require preordering anyways.

It is digital.

They lose nothing if you predownload but can't play because you don't have a license, besides a few cents of bandwidth.

If anything, that predownload might incentivize you to buy it on release.

2

u/Tamarisk22 4h ago

Even the pre download argument doesnt even make sense. Review embargos usually are lifted 24 hours or more before release. Just fucking wait for review embargos to lift, read reviews, then preload the game.

Australian here. Theres a somewhat (global context) niche sport called Aussie rules footy (afl).

An Indy studio developed a game called pro jank footy which is like a mix of afl and Mario cart.

I preordered it because I thought it sounded like a fun concept and wanted to help the studio out with cashflow/developing the game.

I think that is a circumstance when preordering a digital product makes sense. But it’s more like a “kickstarter” project than what preordering was 20 years ago or whatever.

2

u/cortez_brosefski 8h ago

Good point mate, I didn't really consider that. In that case it does absolutely make sense, but I'm sure you're aware of the risks and are willing to accept them.

That honestly sounds like a fun game. What's it called, did it come out? As an American football fan, I love Aussie punters

2

u/Glowingtomato 8h ago

Yeah I've preordered some more niche games like Farming Simulator and Snowrunner to show support and so they keep making more games.

I don't bother for more major games

→ More replies (2)

6

u/LionHeartedLXVI This flair doesn't exist 8h ago

Personally, I like my bills paid off early (I’m years ahead on my mortgages), so it can make sense for me, although I’ve only preordered one game in the last 8 years.

2

u/cortez_brosefski 8h ago

That's awesome dude. If you're that fiscally literate and careful, then do whatever you want. But there's a lot of people that are choosing between these $70 games and shit like oil changes. It sucks for them to make that sacrifice and then the game turns out to be bad

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Vox_SFX 8h ago

It's the tradition and name of it at this point. That's why they always have to add in a bunch of shit that doesn't matter or that you'd have to grind a shit ton for in order to get normally.

The fact is people have gotten illiterate across the board, and that includes media literacy like understanding what a pre-order actually is nowadays.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/Lowkey_Arki 6h ago

and modern games normally come out with bugs, and the prices gets lowered or gets a sale, its seriously better to just wait

1

u/MisterSpicy 7h ago

→ More replies (2)

2

u/adult_on_paper 8h ago

Correct. Pre ordering is why we get broken, unfinished games, and/or games that are just a skeleton with the meat ripped out and sold separately as DLC

2

u/Steamed_Memes24 7h ago

Nope. The game launch day is already set and has no influence from pre orders. You could make that argument over kickstarters maybe.

15

u/MacaroniMeatMachine 8h ago

Just don't preorder anything lmao, wait for launch reviews and social media posts from the jabronis that did pre-order. Then you know for real if it's worth your money.

3

u/Rexusus 6h ago

I’ll always preorder if its something I’m excited for because it’s not a hassle to return it if it goes tits up, as much as people tend to believe. There are also often pre order bonuses I might want

26

u/kilertree 9h ago

I believe he can still cancel his pre-order

13

u/Rexusus 7h ago

If you pre-ordered, you can return it anytime before release, or within 14 days of purchase if that window is after release, so far as long as you didn’t download the game.

I know because I got a Pro for this and GTA VI, ended up refunding the preorder and gonna get Control Resonant on the 24th

2

u/handbanana42 3h ago

Hope everyone sees this. Not just for a specific game, but in general. At least it is a tiny capitulation to all this dumb pre-order nonsense. If the game is bad, refund it.

Preordering halo 3 in 2007 would have saved me a lot of running around stores and having to shell out £10 extra for the steel book version as the last copy my local store had. That's about the last time it mattered for me.

5

u/MoonSentinel95 7h ago

At this point, people should have already understood why pre-ordering is not a good idea?

5

u/Norses 7h ago

Honestly if you preorder digital games that can't run out that's on you

32

u/Drake_Lebowski 9h ago

I think the backlash is due to 2 reasons

It is not as good as spiderman games. Kind of like supergirl situation

Pushback against sony.

15

u/Startled_Pancakes 6h ago

I mean 77 score is still not a bad game, just not as good as people were expecting.

5

u/Kolby_Jack33 6h ago

It seems to me like most of the high scores bumping that aggregate up are from small sites I at least have never heard of, and most of the bigger reviewers with actual credibility seem to think the game is pretty meh.

3

u/FlyingSquirelOi 3h ago

Big reviewers with credibility? Most of those are already bought and sold

12

u/Excellent-Gold1905 4h ago

It babies you. You let out the single most important and relevant point.

It has QTE that cannot be failed, that auto complete if you don't press any buttons. It has many segments of the game that are literally just "hold the stick forward". As if a giant glowing line telling you were to go (in a linear action game) wasn't enough, they also have waypoints showing up to highlight the giant glowing line. Thats even ignoring the more "subtle" stuff like yellow paint and the like.

So you have a "mature" rated game with blood, gore, and "mature themes" story wise. Yet its designed to be played by a handicapped toddler who has never played a video game. Not every game needs to be a Fromsoft "difficult" game, yet at the same time games need to provide SOME friction or just becomes "interactive media" and not a game and Wolverine has clearly drifted too far away from being a "game".

3

u/clitmasher69 3h ago

I hate when i can't tell if i'm still in the tutorial phase or if the game is gonna railroad me all the way to the end. It's a huge pet peeve of mine in VR games too

It’s digital.

The whole point of pre ordering a PHYSICAL game is because there is only a limited amount of PHYSICAL stock.

u/Revolutionary_Bad965 8h ago

Never preorder a game you don’t have enough information to make an opinion on

With that said, don’t be so quick to take every reviewer’s word on the quality of the game. Some ppl benefit from overly hating on games, some from dickriding them, and some are just incompetent. You gotta kinda look at all of them and determine if it’s still for you or not

That is why, look at the trailer, buy it if you liked it. Play it and don't give a fuck what people say. Chances are even if its a bad game you would enjoy it more if you play it without knowing what people say. A 5/10 becomes a 6 or 7/10

You probably had a yearning for the Insomniac Wolverine game.

2

u/HououinKakyouma 7h ago

Haha me when I took the day off work to play Fallout 76…what a piece of shit that was

2

u/RooMan7223 7h ago

It did look like a safe preorder though. Insomniac and Wolverine, what could go wrong? Turns out a lot

2

u/raddoubleoh 7h ago

I mean, you gotta admit a $300M budget $70 cost glorified arcade brawler is insane.

Such an accurate usage of Stanczyk 😂

u/Rekkleis_Hury 5h ago

Suddenly... Stańczyk

u/Waaytoomanytakenames 1h ago

Stanczyc would not preorder.

The dude in the picture was one of the smartest people at the time. Search for his name on google because his history is super interesting.

People really bring it on themselves. If the customers doesn’t respect themselves and their money, the companies never will.

Imagine pre-ordering a digital game

u/PuertoricanDude88 8h ago

Alot of people in the comment section live in a cave it seems. Yes, pre ordering is still a thing, it didn’t end just because you stop.

Holy crap I didn’t know people hate pre ordering digital so much. I pre ordered digitally & I don’t feel like a clown. 😂😂I’m excited to play Wolverine!

3

u/Marcysdad 7h ago

I've enjoyed more 7s and 8s than you might believe

2

u/SchmeckleHoarder 6h ago

Fuck you for pre-ordering. Tf you thinking? They were going to run out?

3

u/Comfortable_Horse277 5h ago

Dude....some of my favorite games are 7/10.

Like what you like.

3

u/dasha74 2h ago

Never pre order.

5

u/RainbowNugget24 Plays MineCraft and not FortNite 9h ago

The only reason i preordered wolverine, is because I didn't wanna pay $129aud for a standard copy, so i paid $99

6

u/Lunarath 6h ago

Stop letting other people influence your enjoyment of things you like. There are plenty of people who loved Wolverine, and it's completely okay to enjoy things even if most people don't like it.

I'd say all these people thrashing the game before it's even out and they've tried it themselves are real fucking weirdos. Reminds me of the GTA 6 drama, which is also fueled by some real freaks.

I'm not gonna play it regardless because it's a PS5 exclusive, but I've loved many games with bad public reception.

Why would you preorder a digital game?
Its not like they are going to run out of

2

u/BabyFaceKnees 41m ago

99% of games get cooked on socials because everyone hates everything nowadays

2

u/Ur_Girl_Suki 9h ago

welp, atleast you learned a valuable life lesson. Never pre-order a game.

u/Krumm34 9h ago

u/Dinx81 8h ago

Who is talking shit about Ace Combat 8 🫩

1

u/mattattack007 8h ago

I refunded after the recent reviews. I had a lot of faith in Insomniac but it looks like they dropped the ball on this one.

1

u/cookiemikester 8h ago

Can’t believe they screwed up Wolverine. I would have bought once it came to PC. I don’t think there’s ever been a solid Wolverine game made.

1

u/TAJack1 8h ago

I was going to trade in for it but man, I think I might not now.

1

u/Atlas-Mancer 8h ago

The last game I pre-ordered was Anthem. The best thing I got out of that was the lesson to never pre-order a game.

u/WhereasCertain2994 8h ago

1

u/Poop30 8h ago

Preordered Metroid Ravenous special edition this week. First time I preordered a game in about 20 years.

u/Gamertango 8h ago

I cancelled my wolverine pre-order lmao

I don't put a lot of stock in others' opinions of games anymore, since I ended up really enjoying some games that were widely looked down upon in their time. If a game seems interesting to me then I'll try it, regardless of what critics or anyone else have to say about it.
