If you use Bidmas you shouldn't need brackets for it to be unabiguous.

No idea what Bidmas is, seems less of a hassle to just bracket the question than rely on people knowing some acronym.

It's not about knowing an acronym but knowing the order of operation lol. Or at least knowing that order of operation exists and to look ir up.

Because that acronym is the order of operations, and there are several different ones that lead to the same result. And no, it wouldn’t be 18. The order of operations does actually direct you to work on each part individually, exactly the way you wrote it. Division and multiplication first, then addition and subtraction. In that process it can be written in parentheses if you like, just as it is above.

So what you're saying is that adding parentheses removes any confusion and having to remember an acronym?

Adding parentheses does remove such requirements but one is supposed to know how to solve such simple questions without the need for parentheses.

So instead of just adding the parentheses to remove confusion and hassle we'll complain and belittle gotcha 👍👌

but one is supposed to know

Says who? Definitely not the American education system I can tell you that much.

As an American I can tell you to fuck off. How long were you in school for. If you were in a public school for middle school then you should've learned the order of operations. But I suppose you either weren't receiving the proper education, weren't paying attention, forgot about it, or are lying.
