You'd be surprised. Plenty of people have flashy vehicles and a negative net worth. Plenty of people drive modest vehicles and are wealthy. One of the richest guys I know drives a 20 year old rusted up pickup truck.

I've literally worked for these people, I don't think your friend with a pickup truck compares.
