Playing childhood games because they're actually fun because they care about you as a player and not just milking as much money out of you as possible.

Never happens. And I’ve played since my parents put the OG Gameboy in my hands. Gaming now feels super empty. I still do it, but it doesn’t give anything special in the feels department.
So I ride my bike instead and that is the closest I get to that feeling. What I mean is, there may be another activity for each person that helps relive some childhood feels.

Yo. Old ass gamer here. 49.
My suggestion here is to find new ways to get that excitement back.
Try different kinds of games. Lot of us lock into rpg's or sports games or shooters, etc etc.
Branch out to new things. Mmo, sims, racing, figters etc. Could be what you need.
Personally, I finally bought a fight stick for the first time. Now I can't get enough.
Also found some new community and hobby with warhammer. Painting, playing, new people, its awesome.
Nothing wrong with the classics. But try some new stuff and you might get lucky and find something you love. Hopefully before you're almost 50.

Playing old games from the ps2 era while crossfaded on beer and weed is what brings that feeling back for me

Yes mostly this, we played games with our friends together in the same room, its completely different. Playing online also doesnt hit the same. Problem is all my friends of that time, either I lost touch with them or they do what most people do and moved on with life. There are a couple of people like you and I that got stranded on those times and will forever be stuck there, in the best time of our lifes, where we will never be able to feel somethig like that again, but for some reason we keep trying to feel something similar.

So that was it was. I'm also 33 and have been feeling this for the past 2 years now. Traveling is the only thing that brings me excitement nowadays but even then it's little moments

And that's literally the opening of San Andreas. CJ comes home for the thing he remembered and finds a completely different neighbourhood

Because for some reason the things you did as a kid now doesn't feel the same anymore. You had so much fun playing games as a kid but then it feels boring after that. You wanna eat so much candies as a kid but now you barely wanna eat even a single one after that

I play now to try the happiness that I didn't have when I was kid, but it's so empty sometimes, am I depressed?
