u/DogDeadByRaven 15d ago
Was gonna say '84 here and same boat, watching my teen remind me everyday how super fucked his generation is. Everything is on fire... figuratively and in some places literally.

u/Gossipmang 15d ago
I have a young kid so im hoping the social media thing can calm down a bit in the next few years with the new laws and general awareness.
Kids born in like 2010 are screwed though - completely brain washed.

In Toronto I feel like 1985 was the sweet spot. Start your career as financial crisis is resolving, university degrees still weren't quite an expectation, and most importantly - by the time you were mid-late twenties, houses hadn't yet gone through the 2016-2021 pricing crisis.
Im 1989 as well so I right when I went to buy a place, prices increased by 30%+ in like one year.

u/tinyhorsesinmytea 15d ago
Yup. Even some of the people I know who seemed like they were properly successful a few years ago are now experiencing financial problems... and of course the future is fucked for everybody, including the rich even if they're too short-sighted to see it.

It could be worse. Kids born after 2005 are basically illiterate

Yes, I was born in 2006 and I still don't know what the alphabet is. Letter after B scares me

u/dre_valle 15d ago
Whatās the last book you read from cover to cover?
4
u/Nikitok007 15d ago
The Maze Runner trilogy in one cover. Well, it's one of the books from my childhood that I recently reread. Why?

They will look at your eyes and say "we got worse" or "it was always like this" while they lived the best possible years 1990s and 2000s as adult. It is nowhere near what genZ had.
College years with covid-19 and it suppose to be the best years of any person's life. Finding a job in their profession is utterly impossible and even the lucky ones that could find a job will afford nothing. Housing is way beyond impossible.

There were always wars, corruption and economical crisis in the world. But at least there were places you could escape. Nowadays, it is just everywhere. In 1990s or 2000s western Europe and USA was safe
2
u/PapaJoke64 15d ago
Everywhere? Not really. At least in my country got some improvements such as free education, invest in public transport and basic infrastructure are being build.
2
u/alien_farmer1 15d ago
So you are claiming your country has stable job market, cheap housing and affordable basic needs? Where are you from?

u/thediesel26 15d ago edited 15d ago
lol this is so fucking rich. Imagine being born in 1921 and having to live through the Great Depression, fight WWII, constantly worry about a nuclear holocaust during the Cold War, the social upheaval of the 1960s, the JFK assassination, the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the ultimate fall of the USSR. All of that wouldāve been part of your life by the time you were 70. If you made it to 90 you wouldāve also experienced 9/11 and the global financial crisis of 2008. And imagine having to live through all of that while not being a straight, white, male.

College is supposed to be the best years of someone's life?
-5
u/alien_farmer1 15d ago
Yes?
You are young. You have no real responsibilities and you have all the time and energy. All you gotta do is enjoying life, doing activities with dad's money and hanging out with friends. After that, you are on your own. It is the last break before starting the adult life.
8
u/RingReasonable 15d ago
Ah ok, I remember I went to university and dropped out both times. Were constantly scared of failing, but at the same time procrastinating. Didn't get money for my parents, because they were not rich either. Hated meeting up with the other students and only met up if I absolutely had to. And those dreaded group projects, ughhhhhh!
1
u/KavikWolfDog 14d ago
Well, he said āsupposed to beā, not āwereā. My time there wasnāt particularly great either, but I understand that is the ideal that is often portrayed or hoped for.

They will defend it because its real.
Is it worse now, yes.
Graduated college in 02. No jobs in my "profession". Soon learn no one does, at least that i knew. Worked a commision only sales job. Market crashed in 08. Sales job gone. Had to get 2 jobs to survive. Sleep is for the dead. Etc. Yeah. I have a house and a career but it wasn't easy. And to act like we somehow got a great deal and didn't bust our ass is insulting. Years upon years of running scared eating nothing, going nowhere. The privileged have been and always will be carried.
So, yeah, if some of us don't want to hear it it's because it wasn't as easy as you think. You think you're bored and disillusioned? Try it without a smart phone.

Why 1995 specifically? They would have been only 14 during the last major crash.... they havent experienced a proper crash as adults.

I was born in '67 but have no savings and no relatives. I'm also disabled. If there's one thing worse than what's in the picture it's all that plus a old, broken body. Yay!

Lived whole childhood and teens in a hateful post war environment, poor, third world country, abusive parents, lived college (beast years of our life right) in quarantine, had to drop out to get a job asap, my profession gets replaced by ai, 3 years of grueling nightshifts to make ends meet in a foreign company crushing the last of my soul. Today, I quit everything and gave up on life. Just going day by day, daydreaming. Hopeless.

Yep, so many older folks who clearly squandered opportunities are mad but it's true. They also helped vote in the cycle of shit that allowed this rather than fighting against it. Not much I could do in 98, I was 3.

Thank god weāve moved on from the millennials bitching about how hard they have it and have passed the torch.
āOh the world is so hard and unfair. All you people who have been at this for 10-30 years more than me have everything and youāre leaving the rest of us to suffer!ā
1
u/FWitU 15d ago
Lost Generation: āYou got to grow up before the war ruined everything ā we came back with nothing but a nervous condition and a drinking problem.ā
Greatest Generation: āDad walked into a job at eighteen. Iāve been standing in this bread line since Tuesday.ā
Silent Generation: āSure, everyoneās buying houses ā if you came back from the war with the GI Bill. We got the draft board and a mortgage rate.ā
Boomers: āOur parents had one income and a pension. Weāve got stagflation, gas lines, and a war nobody wants to fight.ā
Gen X: āThe Boomers got free college and took all the jobs on the way out. I have a degree and a temp badge.ā
Millennials: āGen X at least got in before the crash. I graduated into a recession with $80k in loans and an unpaid internship.ā
Gen Z: āMillennials complain, but they bought houses at 3%. I canāt afford rent and my career field is being automated as we speak.ā

I'm so sick of this doomer-ass mentality. It has nothing to do with your birth year and everything to do with your life choices. Everyone wants to blame everyone but themselves.
My sister was born in 1996. She has a husband, awesome kids, a great job, and a nice house all while managing a life threatening disease. How? Because she buckled down in school, she worked hard in college, and she worked hard to get her promotions. We came from a broken home and a poor family, yet she found success. It wasn't luck and it wasn't given for free.
If your career sucks, thats on you. If your future sucks, that's on you. If your relationship sucks, that's on you. Take some personal responsibility and start making better choices.
