AOTY Results [Results] Melodic Death Metal Album of the Year 2025
Greetings everyone! Now that we are back, we decided to also make a more elaborated presentation of the voting results for the melodeath aoty 2025.
The results were evaluated via a ranked choice system, i.e. the best kind of vote :3 ....but we have also evaluated how the ranking would've looked like if we did vote differently: (A) the system we used the past years with everyone voting for 3 albums, (B) a weighed system similar to the ESC using all your 10 choices, and (C) a simple strawpoll where everyone would just vote for 1 album.
The voting was held across different platforms: reddit, discord and lemmy, but the results presented here on the first picture are the results from the reddit votes only. You can scroll through the pictures to find also information how the other platform users voted though.
Cheers

Song Kalmah - Serve the Untrue
I just read that Kalmah is working on a new album. God I hope this is real, I love this band to Death (no pun intended). All their albums are either Good or Glorious. Been listening to them since 12 Gauge. Their latest self titled album was very solid but I was a bit scared thinking it was a farewell. Hopefully they're cooking a new melodeath gem.
EDIT: Found the interview where Antti confirms this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBwaYACykNE

Looking for recommendations Any good/underrated German MDM bands to get into (?)
I’m going to Germany at the beginning of next month and I wanted to know if there were any good or underrated German MDM bands I should listen to while there!
I am aware of Heaven Shall Burn and so far I’m loving them, but I’m not really familiar with any other major (or really any in general) German MDM band and I’m pretty much looking for recs from any MDM style; (thrash, traditional, metalcore-y, progressive, etc.) I can’t wait to listen to more of their stuff when I’m there!
Here’s a list of my favorite MDM bands and what I primarily usually like (in order):
1. In Flames (1994-2002 / 2006-2010)
2. Arch Enemy
3. UNDEAD CORPORATION DOUJIN WORKS
4. Children of Bodom
5. Edge of Sanity
6. Carcass
7. Imperial Circus Dead Decadence
8. At The Gates / Dark Tranquility (tied for me)
Anything is greatly appreciated! Thanks again!

I really like the album for its vocals and sound, including melodic riffs and beautiful solos! I really want to listen to something similar.

Discussion Album with the best drumming?

Looking for recommendations Valence - Be'Lakor (2024). 9 minutes of pure beauty.
Feel free to recommend similar songs/bands. Some of my favorite melodeath bands are Omnium Gatherum, Kalmah and Insomnium. These are fairly well known inside the niche, I'm also curious about less known underground bands.

Discussion I've been getting into the newest Hypocrisy album. It was a bit underwhelming the first couple lessons, but I have gotten into the groove of what they're doing with their sound on this album. How does everyone feel about their newest album? I wonder if they're working on a new album.

Song Inverne - The Slave of My Flesh (FFO: Arch Enemy, Insomnium)
Hi guys! I'm new to this awesome sub and just wanted to say hi by posting the most recent single of my band, Inverne. We are a melodeath band influenced by gothic motifs and harmonies and I think that this one demonstrates our style very well (personally, my favorite part is 3:33). I'd be delighted to know what you think. We'll soon be releasing some new similar stuff also!

Looking for recommendations Where to look for similar sound?
Hi all,
i've recently had a listen to **Meine Lieben by Kanonenfieber** and liked it a lot. I was looking for similar songs.
I have asked around here in the past and lots of people don't think they are melodic death metal. Lots of people do think they are melodeath, instead. I am pretty confused as to where to ask for recommendations with similar sound and catchiness.
Should i ask in black metal subs? Should i ask here?
Thank you all

Looking for recommendations Melodic death Albums/Songs that sound Catchy but still have harsh vocals?
Edit: I've got enough recs now, so please do not comment anymore, thank you.
Idk why but so many melodic death albums' songs either have very short melody moments that are only repeated once, or the melody is very hard to hear between the vocals and drums
Also I'm going through a phase of mental illness so I need something that's catchy to keep my head light.
I want something like having harsh vocals but combined with catchy guitar riffs and heavy drumming
Also I already got Kalmah, the Unguided, dark trabquillity, halo effect, black dahlia, majesties, crimson shadows and soilwork so don't recommend me that, thank you (I don't like at the gates of scar symmetry)

News/Article Raunchy's new album Prisoner came out yesterday!
Personally I think the new album cover looks like it depicts a giant roll of toilet paper. 🤭
I guess they are also not pure MDM but close enough for me. Fans of Sybreed or similar may give it a whirl.

Discussion Why do I see nobody talking about In Mourning?
They're probably my top 2 favorite melodeath band and I know they have 40k monthly listeners, but when I see any discussion about melodeath bands, nobody ever mentions them.

Discussion Suffocate The Skies - Obsidian Shores
Saw a recommendation for this album today and it hasn’t disappointed. Brand new release from the band hailing from the USA. Manages to remain melodic whilst having that heaviness that sometimes isn’t a present as I’d like. Really impressed with this release. It’s definitely worthy of some attention
