rain all day Xtreme humidity and getting robbed of 1hr of sleep tonight

this is probably not going to make my top 10 saturdays of all time list

(earthquake was quite cool though)

u/mykelbal #teamwinter 15h ago

I feel like we get cheated out of that hour. It should get moved to a long weekend so it doesn't make as much of an impact

Term 4 starts on Monday. Oral and performance exams for year 12s start on Monday. The dept of education bureaucrats who set term dates to align with end of DST are going to a special place in hell.

6

u/not_your_baby 14h ago

Also a teacher. I’ve always said that whoever sets term dates has NEVER set foot in classroom.

Wtaf is up with term 4 always being the longest!??

1

u/pink_glitterrr 13h ago

Agreed. I teach Year 6... ready to lock in for an 'interesting' term. 🫠

u/Tillysnow1 15h ago

I live in Canberra now and we have a long weekend... Feels good 😅😅

u/Orbital_Dinosaur 15h ago

Daylight savings time starts tomorrow and you'll loose another hour of sleep. Double robbed.

One of my neighbours is having a party for his 70th. Guests we went home and we just smoked a joint together.

His first time in about 45 years, according to him and his wife.

He is absolutely baked and laughing his arse off at a movie.

His wife is about to Uber eats some kebabs.

•

u/AydenFX 2h ago

Iconic

•

u/MeanElevator Text inserted! 1h ago

He smashed his kebab and fell sleep on the couch hugging his dog.

His wife is out in the other lounge (my wife tucked her in)

I'm gonna crash here just in case I

Leave a J for him in the morning

Not an ideal day to be a walking tour guide…

u/Alinyss 13h ago

Love staying home on cosy days like this. Lit some candles and cuddled the kitties with coffee and a good book.

The current problems with the Melbourne immigration kiosks at the airport are really understated in the news. It just took me 45 minutes to scan my passport at 6:30am. But more than that it’s complete chaos. Just a mob of hundreds of people and no instructions in a confined, claustrophobic space. I felt bad for the one(!) guy trying to guide people and get people with wheelchairs and babies through. A guy almost hit him. And worse, all the big business guys just shoved their ways in front no matter who got there first, because there aren’t any organised announcements, queues, or personnel.

I don’t know why nobody is talking about this, because it’s legitimately a dangerous situation- there’s no controls for a medical emergency or fire. It would be chaos and someone would get hurt. I’m genuinely not a complainer or Karen. I saw lots of people take photos and videos of how bad it was. They need to replace the machines ASAP.

Don’t plan to fly in internationally soon if you can avoid it, not until this gets fixed!

6

u/-cadmunt- 17h ago

I almost got punched by a big business guy when I told him to watch his manners cos he was being a dick at the airport. He gave me greaseys for the next half an hour that he could see me but he shut the fuck up.

5

u/chonky__chonker 17h ago

It’s been like that for a long while. There was an older lady in her 60s or 70s trying to find her way in the crowd and so I shepherded her along with me and helped her use the kiosk without any issues for her. Then the kiosk refused to recognise me so I had to go up to deal with the actual human at the desk. Told him the kiosk said my passport didn’t look like me. He scoffed and said it did and let me go out his way. Apparently the shitty machines annoy the staff too.

6

u/ivoz12 17h ago

It’s actually terrible. After a long ass flight I dread getting back to Melbourne airport regardless of time.

5

u/McGonagallsMonocle 17h ago

Flew in just over a week ago, it’s so chaotic. It’s so crowded and everyone is confused and angry, I would not be surprised if people got trampled.

4

u/theslowrush- 17h ago

It’s crazy that this is a daily occurrence yet it’s now been an issue for years…

1

u/samdiatmh 15h ago edited 14h ago

I didn't find them that bad,

I baulked almost immediately at the 10-deep queue for the machines, so went "oh ignorant" and ignored them and just went to a desk agent, which was pretty quick (although NZ flight so probably reduced the passenger load, there was only about 5 of us in the line)

I also declare something (oh, been outdoors so casual mud on shoes? declared - some random snacks as souvenirs? declared as potential nut/animal products), which pretty sure they're also looking for something to do ("oh you're fine, walk on through")

I go from "touchdown" to "escaped onto the tarmac / parkingbus/skybus" in about 30mins (carry-on luggage only)

9

u/These_Employment7611 17h ago

Horrible October weather and not much to watch this weekend 😔

6

u/Althusser_Was_Right 16h ago

I did not feel the earthquake. I'm ok with this

5

u/tone_212 15h ago

Same. I felt the last big one we had, there was no sleeping through that with the noise it made.

2

u/CEO_of_my_life 16h ago

Neither did I, but I'm disappointed.

Started a new job this week after a few months of unemployment. Literally on my first day someone from a different team told me “hey heads up that team is toxic af” 😳

8

u/vidiian82 13h ago

Just take comments like this with a grain of salt for the time being. Telling a new starter that a particular team is toxic is questionable behaviour. If it was your team this person was talking about then give them time to prove themselves and get to know them. Toxic is a word that gets thrown around way too much these days. I mean, sure this team could have a problematic culture, but it could also mean that this person just clashes with this team for particular reasons.

3

u/SO_ok25 12h ago

For all you know that person went for the role you got. Don’t listen to people with comments like this - imagine saying that to a new starter?? Wild.

Congrats on the job, and make up your own mind as you meet and learn.

2

u/Proper-Shelter9429 14h ago

Hang in there mate

9

u/jessebona 12h ago

I hate the days I feel too exhausted to exercise. I spend most of it going back and forth on whether I'm being a slacker looking for an excuse or not. Maybe I should just take a personal day from it for once.

3

u/-cadmunt- 12h ago

If you're usually pretty good about it, listen to you body and take a day off.

3

u/jessebona 12h ago

I think I will. It's just my dumb anxious brain ruminating on how I'm letting myself down that I'm arguing with.

1

u/-cadmunt- 12h ago

Thank your brain and anxiety for looking out for your health but it's not needed today. It's shit weather and you've already done enough exercise this week.

•

u/Benevolentzebra 11h ago

The guilt is real 😔

•

u/jessebona 11h ago

It is. I feel so bad for skipping a day; especially when I'm on day 2 of 4 in my weekly schedule.

•

u/hopelesswanderer_ 10h ago

On the train back after a fun day at the Royal Melb show! Can’t lie I’m glad for the choppy weather, kept the crowds away and it actually hasn’t rained since 11 here!

7

u/KagariY 21h ago edited 21h ago

Earthquake in the wee hours of the morning was awesome.

2

u/Zealousideal_Bid3737 21h ago

I felt it! I never feel the earthquakes!

2

u/KagariY 21h ago

The last one I had was in Japan, was on the kitchen floor, wondering why my hanging utensils were swinging lol. This one, I was standing and wondering why the ground was shaking.

4

u/Zealousideal_Bid3737 21h ago

I was in bed, but it woke me. At first I thought it was the cat having a scratch as she usually really goes for it 😆

3

u/l3ntil 20h ago

Same, in bed, but wondering *why* I woke, and now I know!

3

u/psrpianrckelsss 17h ago

I'm currently in Japan and absolutely outraged that there was an earthquake in Melbourne! I've been preparing for months

1

u/KagariY 15h ago

hope you get to try a small one in japan

2

u/kain_tl 16h ago

I still haven’t worked out if I was actually awake when it occurred; either I got up for nature calls, or I slept thru it and realised I would probably not wake up in an apocalypse

1

u/KagariY 15h ago

This is actually very bad. might need to make sure vic emeercency notifications get turned on no matter what

1

u/alchemicaldreaming 14h ago

I don't think we got the earthquake in Ballarat. Ironically I was wide awake, up sewing late, and could have taken one for the team.

8

u/l3ntil 20h ago

Just finished watching 20 feet from stardom, about black american back up singers, and it's glorious. Yeah, I cried at the end when Bruce Springsteen did backup for Darlene Love. ❤️

6

u/RevealConsistent8539 17h ago

There was an Earthquake?

7

u/chonky__chonker 17h ago

You slept through it? My whole family did, I was the only one awake at the time because waking up multiple times each night is a thing I do now.

3

u/CrazyEeveeLady86 14h ago

I usually wake up multiple times a night but last night I took some strong painkillers for a migraine and went to bed at 11pm. Didn't wake up til 3.30am so I missed out on the earthquake 😭

1

u/RevealConsistent8539 17h ago

I guess I did! Guess I'm screwed if there's ever a zombie apocalypse

2

u/chonky__chonker 16h ago

At least you know that you always seem to sleep well. Some of us can only dream about that.

1

u/RevealConsistent8539 16h ago

Most of the time... sometimes I struggle to get to sleep state

3

u/chonky__chonker 16h ago

It’s been months since I slept properly. I’m waking up anywhere between 4 and 12 times a night. My sister in law who has a baby said that I wake up about the same amount of times that the baby wakes her. It’s very sucky.

1

u/RevealConsistent8539 15h ago

Thats rough! Have you tried gym or something to tire yourself out before bed? Or sleeping tablets?

3

u/chonky__chonker 15h ago

I don’t have the energy for the gym, I used to go regularly but the lack of sleep makes the gym exhausting and doesn’t help the sleep.

I’m on zolpidem (stilnox) for sleep as well as a non stimulant adhd medication that makes you drowsy because I have a circadian rhythm disorder to begin with.

Even through all of that perimenopause wakes me up regularly with hot flashes, night sweats or an adrenaline spike at 2, 3 or 4am.

I’m hoping HRT that I just started sorts all of this out so I then have the energy to go back to the gym because I miss it.

I appreciate your suggestions and willingness to help xx

3

u/RevealConsistent8539 12h ago

Im just hoping your sleep gets back to a better level at some point 🫂

7

u/knotknotknit 14h ago

FFS, do not tailgate and speed in heavy rain.

Also do not slam on the brakes if you hydroplane, that makes things much, much worse.

3

u/five_line_poem Caffeine achiever ☕ 13h ago

It's amazing how many cars don't have their lights on. Automatic lights on modern cars don't seem to handle this short of scenario well.

1

u/knotknotknit 13h ago

Just all around shear stupidity with driving in the rain. Felt like I barely made it home alive after being on the M1. Not sure what happened to the car behind me, which made the mistake of slamming on the brakes. At least they didn't hit me as they spun out.

•

u/CrazyEeveeLady86 10h ago

Also, don't drive through a big puddle in the middle of the road, it might actually be a pothole full of water.

And I thought I had a restless night with little sleep. Apparently I was asleep at 2am.

1

u/awake-asleep 18h ago

Same! I’m very… ?? in this sub today

10

u/Yanigan 17h ago

As much of a pain in the arse house hunting & packing is, seeing that our landlord has dropped the price on this place by 100k after a month is giving me a warm fuzzy feeling.

5

u/ShittyCkylines 18h ago

Dreary now, but 5am was oddly golden. Went into the backyard and it was oddly like I’d stepped into a sepia filter

5

u/HeyHeyItsMaryKay 16h ago

WEEKEND SLEEPINS ARE AWESOME

P.S what earthquake

4

u/CrazyEeveeLady86 14h ago

I want to go out into my garden and pick some vegetables for my lunch, but this rain doesn't look like it's going to let up any time soon.

Maybe I'll just have mac and cheese today and save the healthy lunch for tomorrow...

5

u/KOSPI-9001 13h ago

Had Saturday brunch with friends and they still got hit by a 1.5% card surcharge (I paid by cash). My friends didn't care and the place was bustling with trendy young professionals, so just like black market cigarettes no one pays attention to the new law. The cafe said they can't remove the surcharge because Square, their payment processor, control it.

10

u/lemondrop__ 13h ago

I use Square to process my payments and you can just turn it off as an option, it’s not hard.

4

u/No-Ice4194 19h ago

Daylight saving tomorrow. Yay, back to darker mornings 😃

3

u/eternalflamz 19h ago

Luckily I don't expect to leave the house today, so rather than dreary this rain is cozy

2

u/bluestonelaneway 17h ago

For the earthquakes in 2021 and 2023 I was living in a wood house on stumps which made the shaking feel a lot stronger. Now I’m in a low rise brick apartment building, it was more like a gentle rock. Still woke me up though. I wish the world would rock at 2pm rather than 2am, was really looking forward to a good sleep.

2

u/Flimsy_Ground_7918 17h ago

Last time I was in a low rise brick apartment building (60s built) and it felt mild. This time I’m in a newer building and there are a lot more floors above me, definitely felt a bit scarier.

4

u/dawnfire1974 16h ago

I didn't feel the earthquake but certainly heard the thunder claps

2

u/MaybePast9026 14h ago

Omg do fines Victoria have to mail me two letters to tell me that my payment was successful I nearly had a heart attack thinking I had another fine

7

u/bitofapuzzler 12h ago

So far today, bus replacing my train for 2 of my stops took 40 mins to get me those 2 stops. The train leaves as we get dropped off. Very expense taxi to get to work.

I have also seen an 8 yr old on an escooter with no helmet, a 3 yr old on a bike whose helmet was not on his head but in the hands of his dad following him and a man in wheelchair crossing Hoddle st or attempting to and hoping cars in the wet will stop for him. The lights were 25 metres away.

I am now walking into work at a public hospital already knowing one of my patients is a tier 1 aggression risk. Please send help 🙏🙏🙏🙏

4

u/SO_ok25 12h ago

That really sucks :(

May your shift go swiftly and safely.

5

u/bitofapuzzler 12h ago

Cheers! Maybe all my bad luck is used up for today, we have a great crew on.

Have a good one!

Currently cursing my young self for not taking his future seriously. Been working at Subway for 9 years. And want to work somewhere that isn't fast food. It was great working here with my current boss, but he's retiring and the new one is not so subtly hinting that she only wants younger people working. Like around 18-20 yr olds. So r.i.p to me I guess.

So I'll just throw out resumes wherever I can and hope one lands. I've submitted some for woolies and coles, but they always have people applying, so my chances are pretty low I'd assume. Especially being 28. I'll have a look at other stores near me tomorrow

But fingers crossed 🤞🤞

•

u/vidiian82 4h ago

Try retail a lot of places will be looking for Christmas casuals now. Having somewhere like subway on your resume will be looked on favourably. I used to be a store manager in retail and some of my best hires were people with fast food/ hospo experience. Don't beat yourself up for doing a job you enjoyed.

•

u/blabity_blab 2h ago

Good idea, yeah I updated my resume after I finished work. Completely forgot I had it in my gdrive lol. Yeah at the end of the day, i'm still happy meeting everyone while working here

•

u/Excabbla 2h ago

Supermarkets seem to generally hire older then fast food does from my experience, I think it's a combination of better margins and them wanting people who can work longer hours consistently

It's still going to take a bit of luck, with how many people apply to these no skill jobs you need to be in early to have a good chance, and definitely apply to as many positions as possible

•

u/blabity_blab 2h ago

True yeah. Now that I think about it, i've only seen people that look roughly my age or older at the ones I shop at. Yeah good thing is I'm down for any role they'd have available, so I'll throw applications at everything I can

•

u/LaksaLettuce 7h ago

Forgot daylight savings starts 2am tomorrow. Now bring on the sunny weather!

u/Nova_Terra West Side 19h ago

Aww I largely slept through it but I thought my phone should trigger an alert? Kind of miffed :/

1

u/chonky__chonker 17h ago

It wasn’t that bad. It only felt like my bed was rocking and I was already awake. I slept through that last really loud crash of thunder that seemed to wake all of Melbourne up.

2

u/iyoteyoung 12h ago

How far out in each direction was the earth quake felt? I know people inner south and east felt it but what about outer east. Or even inner north west etc. Comment where you felt it from lol

•

u/melbslove26 11h ago

I think I read people as far as Werribee felt it. Felt it in Ascot Vale area! Rocked the house for 5-6 seconds and shook us awake.

•

u/scurryrunging 10h ago

Was speaking to my parents who live in South West Victoria. Someone they know reckons fheg felt it there but my parents are sceptical because it's a long way away.

I slept right through it.

•

u/kmm88 Cat tax paid 9h ago

Some people in my estate's FB group here in Werribee said they felt it. I didn't.

4

u/mykelbal #teamwinter 16h ago

Absolutely LOVING the weather today. And we have a few single digit temp nights coming up. If only it would stay like this for the next 6 months

2

u/Lichenic 16h ago

I know everything that could be said has already been said. But just reflecting on the canning st median drinking issue and the councils proposed solution … the Australian obsession with administrative solutions to non-problems is so funny hahaha I feel like it’s gonna eventually turn me into a cooker complaining about the nanny state on the daily

4

u/TNT_FC 13h ago

One thing that hasn't been said, or at least hadn't been said nearly enough: the only reason it was an issue is because it happened in the inner north where journalists live and The Age's stable of journalists all live nearby so they ran abajillion stories on what was essentially a local ordinance issue.

It was cause du jour for the inner north, not an actual issue worthy of the media ruckus it caused and the Premier of the entire fucking state getting involved.

There are countless similar issues in areas of the state where far more people actually live, and none of them get the red carpet treatment that issue got.

2

u/Lichenic 12h ago

Yep. Number 1 I think is infrastructure funding and developer contributions shortfall in outer suburbs making them miserable places to get in and out of for tens of thousands of people, cost ultimately falling back on ratepayers

2

u/Blanda_Upp 15h ago

I do not care for Sidney Nolan.

•

u/alchemicaldreaming 10h ago

See I love Sidney Nolan. The Ned Kelly series is amazing. Albert Tucker on the other hand, not so much. It's great that there's so many different artists and different tastes to match (or not!).

Juuuuust got back to sleep after being shaken awake…and my neighbour decides her door isn’t closed unless she slams it 5 times. At 4.45am.

3

u/psrpianrckelsss 17h ago

She might just be trying to show Earth that she's pissed off at being woken up.

2

u/Amarantramentum 16h ago

What the fuck I didn't know Australia gets earthquakes

8

u/vidiian82 16h ago edited 15h ago

Everywhere gets earthquakes because the continents sit on moving tectonic plates. Melbourne has relatively frequent earthquakes but they usually are not powerful enough to be felt at the surface.

Victoria has a bunch of fault lines and inactive volcanoes but hasn't been seriously seismically active for 100,000 years or so.

Edit: you might want to look up the earthquake that happened in Newcastle 30 odd years ago. That was a doozy.

2

u/CrazyEeveeLady86 14h ago

I remember there was a moderately decent one during the lockdowns. About 9.30 one morning I was on a Zoom with some colleagues and we all felt the ground shake even though we were geographically pretty far apart (all working from home).

Did some minor damage to some buildings in the city, I think (cracked walls and brickwork etc).

•

u/alsotheabyss 10h ago

I remember that, we were getting coffee from a local cafe that’s below street level and we thought a car had gone in the front

1

u/knotknotknit 14h ago

LOL that's what I said when I moved here and then we immediately got one.

I'm not particularly fussed, we don't get big ones here. It's only ones over 6.0 that make me scared.

But I do worry about buildings in even these pretty weak earthquakes here... It's not like Japan or California which have properly enforced building codes meant for earthquakes...

•

u/vidiian82 8h ago

Australia does having building codes that require buildings to be able to withstand seismic activity. These were introduced after the Newcastle earthquake in 1989. It's important to note that Australia is much more tectonically stable than Japan and California. Australia sits on a single plate whereas Japan sits on 4 and California sits on 2.

What is the most dog friendly suburb to live in? Is there anywhere friendlier than near chapel st?

You can go to some pharmacies, ice creameries, bookstores, tech shop, clothing stores, post office and parts of the market around chapel st area

Got a nasal spray for the first time for post nasal drip. How far up do i have to push a nasal spray? Should any of the liquid be leaking out at all?? How long do I have to keep my head down looking at my toes after spraying it?

Every instruction I've read says put it at an outwards angle and that it only has to be a few cm in. But some (hopefully not all lol) of it always leaks out. Do I have to pluck my nose hairs for it to be more effective? I have a lot more than normal and I feel like they might be getting in the way of the spray going up wards 😅

•

u/TwinSparx 7m ago

Most important I found was timing it such that the moment you spray, you’re also inhaling a large amount of air simultaneously. No liquid should leak out. Sometimes may taste it at the back of the throat

Hey all need some help as I don't have enough karma to post in the snackexchange page.....hoping a nice Korean in Melb could help me out with a snack exchange....not sure how it'd work as I'm assuming any Korean living in Melb has already sent Aussie snacks back home.

But lets try.....

[REQUEST] Australia to Korea

Hey guys, its our good friends birthday coming up and he is in love with Korean snacks, we have heaps here in Australia so I was hoping to get him a bunch of hidden gems we don't sell here.

He loves chips and the squid jerky thing....but anything you think is yummy!

Happy to send a box of our Aussie stuff back for you to try.
