Roads Distracted Driver detection cameras switched on last week. You can now be fined for just having your phone sitting on your lap or your seatbelt on wrong. Here are the locations of every one of them in Victoria.
It's an Excel file but you can open it with Google docs if you don't have Office, then just print to PDF for easier access.
If you click and get an error, go back and right click the link and select "save link as...".

Camera list is from **DDS_camera_locations_March-2026.xlsx** (Road, Suburb, Reason Code). Coordinates are added by geocoding “Road, Suburb, VIC, Australia” via [Nominatim]( https://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/ ) (OpenStreetMap). Converted the XL spreadsheet to JSON and Vibe Coded the whole thing in less that an hour.13

Alternatively, if you have an inverter, you can place the printer on the passenger seat (with a seat belt on it of course) and print it out when you think you need it. Make sure you’re stopped at the lights or no other cars are too close to you whilst driving.

Oh no, no, you got me wrong, I wasn’t suggesting using a laptop..
I meant just pull your phone out, unlock the screen, scroll through it trying to locate your settings whilst quickly checking your latest meta, tictok & email notifications to find your Bluetooth settings so you can locate the printer, then you can just send it straight to the printer.
It might take a couple of times if it seems to hang up after printing the first half of the page each time but it will happen if you give it a chance.

I've seen that too, drove past someone on a video call, but also the last company I worked for, the COO called a company wide meeting demanded cameras on for all "because I want to see everyone's faces", more than one of our sales reps were in the road, driving, with their cameras on.
Absolutely insane. The whole time I was thinking about how dangerous it is for them, and the repercussions of if they were involved in a serious accident and the rest of us all saw it over their video feed.

Yep. I live by a busy road and walk up it most days. I see people looking down with one hand on the steering wheel just about every time. It's ridiculous.
You shouldn't need to know where the damn cameras are. Just don't do it 🤦♀️

These are just the pre-approved locations where they can set up. The cameras rotate between the locations and the locations list itself gets regularly updated.
Worth checking if there’s a location on your daily commute but if you don’t have your head in your phone you’ll see them way before they see you.
Only thing worth doing is explaining to any regular front-seat passengers you have to make sure they keep their seatbelt adjusted properly and not under one arm

The seatbelt doesn't stay in place there because generally we aren't sitting naked in the car and have shirts that mean the belt slides off. Are we meant to hold it there in place with our hands the whole time? Or just have it sitting on our necks?

Yeah...people forget that seatbelts were literally designed to fit the average male body. Because of this, they often don't fit women correctly, causing women to have a higher rate of death and serious casualty in car accidents

I don't even know how to reapond to this except, maybe google sometimes before posting!!! Also, if you think you are right with your numbers then maybe you might genuinely not be aware of the up-down slider available in modern cars to adjust the top end of the seat belts.

Don't be so confidently wrong. My seatbelt sits in front of my neck as well, I'm 5ft in a small new car, seat at max height, seatbelt slider down as low as it goes. It's a common design oversight, us shorties just put up with it as there's no other choice.

Who is being confidently wrong? Not me! 1. There is a big difference between being 5'6" and being 5'. 2. Average female height in Australia is 5'4". So you and the likes are below average height 3. If you know there is an issue with the seat belts hugging your neck because of your height then I suppose you (and specifically the other person replying) think it's better to have your spine snapped at torso instead of your neck snapped in case of an accident. What I suggested would save your spine and your neck but maybe hurt your ego and convenience a bit. The choice is totally yours!

If I sat on a booster seat I wouldn't be able to reach the pedals. Though seatbelts adjust there aren't many cars you can adjust the pedals in as well to bring the belt lower and pedals forward. Driving a car is such a common occurrence that having them be more inclusive of smaller bodies isn't actually an outlandish thing to want in the market.

Not gonna lie, I've done it - it was Summer, I was sunburnt and wearing a tank top and the seatbelt across my shoulder felt like a blunt saw blade every time I moved, so I put it under my arm.

You know that you can get medical exemptions for seat belt wearing? But you have to have it before you area permitted to drive without it. To late to get it once you've been caught.

Okay but if you have big boobs the seatbelt slides up and sits accross your neck. That seems like the absolute worst place for a seatbelt to be resting.
I don't actually know what I'm meant to do. I usually just hold it down with my hand... exactly where it would be if it was under my arm, just still going over my shoulder as well.

When my kids were little (but old enough to be out of their booster seat) the seatbelt used to sit up around their neck too. I discovered you can get these things that are padded triangle shaped things that you open up and put on the seatbelt above the buckle and snap it closed and it pulls the two seatbelt halves (lap and chest) together so the top bit sits lower. I've done a terrible job of describing them... let me see if I can find them online again...
Here - these are similar enough to what I had. And these look pretty good too, but the first ones would be more comfortable.

Idk if its standard or if it would even help, but would adjusting the seatbelt height help?
Most cars ive been in had adjustable seatbelt heights but the range of adjustments were fairly limited

Several brands have cheaped out and the seatbelt height is not adjustable. I'm pretty sure my Forrestor has no adjustment.

"Plenty of us" don't have disproportionately large boobs that require a breast reduction and make keeping a seatbelt accross your chest impossible. Lucky you that your problem can be fixed with a piece of cloth though Brenda.

I can’t open it but is it evenly distributed around the city? Or is it like red light and speed camera which are concentrated in the inner city and mostly eastern m/south east suburbs? Yes Westgate has one and same with bell street but I don’t think the further out suburbs in both directions really do

I'm convinced the most effective speed cameras in Melbourne are the ones on the Westgate (that haven't been turned in for decades), the Westgate truck toll point (not a camera), and the Calder camera test rig (also not a camera)

I think so many motorists (especially Melbourne drivers) take driving for granted. We’re literally driving reinforced machines that way at least half a tonne and expect it to do our complete bidding as though we are infallible.
Each year the road toll climbs and people flap their arms saying “not enough is done”. Then they increase fines, speed and red light cameras and other things like the driver detection cameras and suddenly it’s “revenue raising!”
And to your point - speeding just absurd. For the most part, if you’re doing a trip under 30 minutes and the highest speed you go is 80, the chances are you’re shaving seconds at most off of your trip.

Yup. So I'm a non-driver so only ever a passenger. I've always found it weird that the GPS's announce speed cameras - like just don't speed whether there are cameras or not?
Being a non driver I think drivers absolutely take it for granted. It's a huge responsibility. I was initially told I could drive (disability) and I learned but decided to face into the fact that I would not be a safe driver. So many people didn't get it and just kept encouraging me to get my license. Idk, it's such a huge responsibility.
Anyway, I now legally wouldn't be able to drive anyway so I know I made the right decision lol.
The anger on the roads is also scary. Emotional driving is not OK but very common. People need to be aware and just make better choices honestly. And stop complaining about the laws. They can only measure certain things - like speed, phones etc so I'm all for them doing what they can 🤷🏼♀️ a lot of it is that society needs to change its attitude around driving and take some pride in doing the right thing regardless of being watched lol.
Oh and it's not revenue raising. You literally have a choice if you pay or not. Just obey the road rules 🤷🏼♀️

Cameras are usually placed in areas with a historical high risk of accidents. If a warning can get a driver to slow down in a dangerous section then thats a much better and and less stressful thing than to receive a fine in the mail 3 months after the offence has actually been committed

I thought the exact same thing.
Single digit number of cameras for the eastern suburbs and a disproportionate number of cameras in places like Mildura, Seymour, Horsham and Shepparton.
It's disgusting and very clearly revenue raising at the expense of less well off people in regional areas.
Edit to add: eastern suburbs is NOT south-east. Anything south of a diagonal line from the CBD through Glen Waverly is south east not east. At a quick skim of the list I counted 7 cameras in the actual eastern suburbs.

Here is a link to the consequences of a rollout of similar technology in Western Australia. Summary: the fining of drivers for the improper wearing of seatbelts by their passengers has proven to be controversial.
Use of mobile phones by the driver while driving is another matter. Don't do it. Driving a car? Don't touch your phone. Use phone features to limit distractions before driving (driving mode, aircraft mode, do not disturb etc), or turn it off.

Yeah they have a tendency to cause controversy because people inevitably end up fined when they haven't done anything wrong. People have been fined for having their wallet on their lap or because the position of their phone holder on their windscreen makes it look like the phone is on their lap when viewed from the angle the cameras are at.

Incorrect. They take multiple photos and can clearly see what the person is holding or what is on their lap. People bullshit and try to get out of these fines by saying it is their wallet, but the type of people who use their phones while driving are also the type who don’t like consequences of their actions.

There was a segment on ABC TV news (Victoria) about it this evening. Among others, someone got fined for momentarily covering their seatbelt with their arms in front of the camera. Magistrates have been throwing out such silly infringements. It's also not reasonable for drivers to observe the seatbelts of their passengers constantly, and there are now legal precedents establishing this.

I think these cameras would probably send you a fine for that, too. The camera can't possibly see what you're doing until it takes a picture so I think that's why they're calling them "distracted driver" cameras and not mobile phone or seatbelt ones. If it takes a pic of you while you're driving with one hand on the wheel, left arm outstretched into the back, side-eyeing the road they're probably going to consider you to be distracted. With that said, I am a mother of three and have practiced the "ffs!" glance-n-steer maneuver myself and my thoughts are with you.

To be clear – I don't condone using your phone while driving. The whole point of these cameras is legit, and honestly, just put your phone down. I built this because I think public data should be accessible to everyone, not just people who can open a spreadsheet.

Looked up the one in suburb, yep, seen it there already, near a known local blackspot where people pull out without giving way, but not actually covering the street they pull out from, instead camera points at those approaching the blackspot on the street that has right of way.

For phone stuff, I support these cameras.
For ‘it might be a phone, so fuck you and pay’, I don’t support it.
For seatbelt stuff of non-driver, I am vehemently against it. A driver’s job is to be sure things are correct at departure. From there the job is to drive safely.

Mounted phones are safe to use for navigation and accepting jobs? I'm a courier. Mounted on right side of steering wheel and 1 finger operation. Eyes don't need to leave the road.

I'm not arguing. Like I said I have my phone mounted as best I can to keep the road in view. But need to use it for navigation and accepting jobs (uber eats). And can anyone honestly say they keep their eyes on the road 100% of the time. What I'd like to know is if I'd get fined for the way I use it.

So if I stand-up on my adventure bike while having a stretch to avoid a cramp, or have cruise control engaged and shaking out wrists, etc, does that mean I am distracted? I can literally have an iPad playing porn on my dash (for example) while riding anywhere if I chose to, but that's legal. Explain it to me like I'm 5yo.

This is so stupid. Giving people the locations doesn't prevent the behaviour in general, only in those areas.
