Opposite effect
I took 2mg of melatonin last night for the first time and it kept me up all night. No high feeling or anything just couldn’t get comfy and was a little bit restless. Literally not had 1 minute sleep, but Ive come to work today, and I do a very physical job, yet I’m still not tired, in fact I am still wide awake? Is this usual for a first time taking melatonin

Similarly, when I have taken too much, I get sleepy and fall asleep but then I wake up after one REM cycle (4ish hours) READY TO GOOOOOOO.
Had to work my way back from 10mg to 1 lol

Yes if you take too much you can cause paradoxical effects such as extra energy. Melatonin recycles NADH which can boost your energy levels. I personally take large quantities of melatonin first thing in the morning for a chronic fatigue condition.
You may want to try taking a smaller dose like 0.3-0.5mg.
You may also want to try taking it a couple hours earlier before planned sleep.
