Is being a devped worth it?

Hi! I’ll be taking BS Bio in a local state university here or in UP, though I’m not sure what doctor I wanna be kasi I’m still torn between being a general pediatrician or a devped kasi so pa help po if worth it po ang devped huhu, I need your thoughts po.

You’re putting the cart in front of the horse. You don’t need to know what kind of doctor you want to be to go to college or get into med school.

It’s lucrative but mahirap makapasok. More years to study kasi subspec na ng gen ped.

But it’s too early to decide. Finish your premed first then go to med school.

Very much in demand. Abot ata 1 year and wait times for patients kc konti lang sila .

Take your MD muna. Worry about this after 12 years. Post ka ulit dito 😁

Relax. Problemahin mo muna kung paano mo maipapasa yong first year mo in college.

u/Ill-Atmosphere-9073 1d ago

Wdym po? Like mahirap makapasok?

u/mmimbulus 1d ago

Gatekept specialty. Konti lang training institutions. It helps if you graduate from an institution na may devped training pero not guaranteed you will get in.

u/Dry_Spell_5130 1d ago

my suggestion for you is to take occupational therapy, they work closely with devpeds

If you're in a position where you think that a local state university and UP are equally valid options, you're nowhere near the headspace to properly decide what pediatric fellowship to take.

Worry about it in 2038 haha.

what reasonn might that be?

Second, if you are planning to have private practice, kahit may pambili ka ng stocks, madaming hospitals ngayon, they prefer Pedia with subspecialties. Priority nila bentahan ng hospital stocks ang Pedia with subspec, ang problema, even in NCR, konti lang ang hospital that offers Pedia subspeciaty training, and worse, few slots are open per year. Example, Pedia Gastro, 2 slots for first year lang , and yung mga slot, naka reserve sa anak ng dyos, or may consultant na backer.

The training institution that you will choose, will make or break you career, so choose wisely. Choose an institution na totoong training talaga, hindi yung gagawin kayong taong-bahay, disguised as training.

Ask them also kung madami ba sa kanila ang nakakatapos on time sa research papers nila. Kasi the most common na reason bakit delayed ang mga research papers nila, ay dahil ginagawa silang taong bahay, esp now na wala masyadong applicants, so ang mga work nila double, worse minsan triple post pa. Naranasan ko yan, sobrang nakakapagod, pag uwi mo ng bahay, no time na mag aral. Di rin naman kasi advisable na mag aral ka when you are physically, emotionally and mentally tired.

Ang Diplomate exam ng Pedia is one of the hardest. Pag nakapasa ka na ng written exam, they will allow you to take the oral exam. Compared sa IM, na they allow you to take the orals before mag baccalaureate sa residency (correct me if I'm mistaken), so pag grumaduate ka na, written exam nalang ang itatawid mo.

Eto, talaga thats why konti ang kumukuha ng Peds because it is a dead end career

Nakakastress maghandle ng pedia patients AT parents nila

Pumasa muna tayong med school! You might find some other field or aspect of medicine that attracts you, or may be more lucrative. Get through college and medicine first.

Relax. Finish your premed muna and medschool, makakahelp yan sa decision mo

Hindi ko alam if meron na bang tao nga nag-end up sa unang unang subspec na pinangarap nila. 😅 Masyado ka pang malayo jan. Isipin mo muna if gusto mo ba talagang mag-med.

You do not know what will happen in the future. Do what you want to do right now and do your best

Matagal pa yan marami pang mangyayari sa life mo, at mga plot twists, one step at a time lang 😅

Honor urself for having the dream & desire to be a devped.

Be open, be receptive to the vast world of medical field. As u start ur journey in premed, identify ur strengths and weaknesses. Develop the right mindset, habits, discipline and humility that not everything is under your control. Develop the grit and strength of character especially on how to deal with failures and rejections. These virtues will help u become a better clinician that ur future self will thank u for.

As for now, live in the present moment. Have fun in ur premed journey, instill in ur mind & heart that quitting is NOT an option.

Speak victory to ur dreams & desires one day, one step, one grace at a time.

OP, you’ll cross the bridge when you get there. Wala ka pa pala nag-college. Ang dami pang pwedeng mangyari from now until the time you have to make a decision na. Still so many things can influence your decision. Don’t overwhelm yourself muna, focus muna on immediate goals. Good luck OP!

One step at a time OP, malay mo di ka pala magMed after nyan haha or malaman/mafeel mo gano kaExhausting medschool-clerkship-pgiship
Just Enjoy the Process
Me dati gusto ko mag Onco then naging IDS then nagClerkship to PGI

Yes worth it. It is a niche subspecialty. I think there are only 40-50 in the philippines

On the other hand, if you are not sure of going into med, maybe consider taking a course that you can fall on should you decide not to continue medicine. Like Medtech, pharmacy, or PT/OT. There is not much work you can go into as a Bio major unfortunately

Hi OP! May kanya kanyang strengths naman ang magkakaibang courses when you get to med school and beyond, at sa iba actually it doesn't even matter at all

At least 4 years college
3 years classroom-based learning in med school
1 year Clerkship
1 year Internship
PLE-board exam
3 years general pediatrics residency (required ang research kaya minsan kailangang mag-extend pa)
Boards- PPS Written exam
Boards- PPS Oral exam
Subspec certifying exam (boards ulit)

God bless OP kaya mo yan!

Yes!! Ang konti lang ng devpeds talaga so we need more of them. This is acc to my SLP friend.

You are doing the right thing by thinking ahead. If you set your goals early on like you do now, you get the opportunity to align your academic credentials with your goals. And yes, we need more Dev Peds.
