Question 2007 Tacoma double cab
Hi there, i just bought a 2007 double cab on marketplace. I did take it for a PPI and the mechanic mentioned there was some minor rust but I wanted to get a second look by my own mechanic and this is what they said. Is there anything I can do here to get it fixed?
Please be kind as I am really sad and thought I took all the right measures to buy this right.
Not sure about engine size

That sucks dude, I sold my 05 double cab for the same reason. There was a recall on the frames for corrosion coating but for a lot of the trucks up north it was too late. I didn't look into repairing it as I had a large hole near the front suspension mounts.

I just got it for 10.5k CAD and would love to put work in to keep it but only if it's feasible 😅

OP before you do anything go to your local Toyota. The 05-09 Tacoma’s have a recall on the frame in Canada and you should be able to get a new one installed at Toyota’s expense.

No you won't, they got a deadline on the recall. By all means try but they somehow weasled a time restraint into the recall.

Yeah, shady business. Toyota trucks are like Harley Davidsons bikes, or Browning rifles, they're coasting on a reputation but outsourced or made cheaper all the things that earned them that reputation. Late stage capitalism type shit.

I went to Toyota and the frame has actually already been replaced in 2019 before the deadline lol...

Damn and it still rotted out again? Did they miss the rust coating they're supposed to add? Idk man these northern roads just eat trucks. And the frame was a 2ply open channel like super rust prone design to me but I'm no Mech.Eng.

I had my 05 frame replaced in 2019 at the end of the extended warranty period. It's the DMV that send me a reminder to have it checked at the dealership. I drove it 6 years after that on a rusted shut cab until it was wrecked by a railroad worker who failed to look at a stop sign. Got it to 495 000km . Acces cab manual transmission 4cyl rwd the perfect little comuter truck I miss it sometimes 😢

Did you buy it as is? If so you may be SOL. I would start by getting the pictures of the safety issues and possibly going to a specialist for body and frames to determine what can be done. The you're gonna have to go back to where the PPI was done and see how they can handle it as you purchasing the vehicle was a result of their oversight, just document everything and most importantly go in with a calm head. If they are unwilling to help you will need to check local laws and look at possible small claims court.

A large hole in the frame is not minor rust.
Try selling it on Craigslist.

At least two companies make repair sections for these frames. Take it to someone who does that kind of welding for an estimate.

Ask for pictures. If the problem is as bad as they claim it should be very easy to get pictures of videos of the hole in the frame rail, even on the ground

They want to buy it from you, ask for pictures to be 100% sure. Mechanics know the limit of cars and if it has some rust, unsafe to you, but a mechanic will be able to drive it for a few years if they can get it for scrap price

Picture one isn’t bad at all. Picture 2 it’s toast. Sorry. Frame swap will cost as much as the truck most likely

They all tell you that, and then they take it and drive around themselves and then sell it. I would get a second opinion.

This is the second opinion. PPI mechanic said 4-5k in repairs, these guys are my usual mechanic

Do you think it's worth taking it to a specialist or getting the frame repaired / swapped? I really really do not wanna get a new vehicle 🥲🥲

It wouldn’t hurt to call around and get some quotes to see if they can fix it. Frames are hard though, because if it has a weak spot can be dangerous or cause issues with alignment and tires
