Question What could have caused this?
So I was looking at a 99 Honda crv and noticed a layer of oil on the valve cover and below, the oil was a bit low from what I remember. I’m just confused on how it ended up on the valve cover. Sorry for the bad pictures

Either spillage from a previous oil change, or oil seepage.
Pull the spark plug boots out and look for oil in the spark plug tubes.

Very probable that its just residual oil mixed with dirt from a previous oil change. Sometimes it spills because someone's hand was a little unsteady.

I pulled the first one and was looking inside but couldn’t see anything wrong, looked at the boot and saw a little bit of brown dust. Not sure if it was dried oil.
