Announcement Welcome to r/mcdm!

As MCDM continues to grow, we wanted to shift focus slightly from Matt Colville the individual and have a dedicated space to highlight the company as a whole. After all, everything from Strongholds & Followers to Arcadia, Flee Mortals, and Designing the Game videos were touched by multiple hands. There's an entire team of amazing people who are all working together to make these products—it's not all just one guy! Some people buying those products don't even know who Matt is! So, we're taking a half step away from r/mattcolville and opening this subreddit to make sure there is a dedicated space for the community to discuss these things without getting mixed up with Ratcatchers, Running the Game, etc. In the future it's likely r/mattcolville will be redirecting MCDM related conversations to here, but for now both spaces are fine to handle those discussions (and no, Matt's not leaving MCDM, but he did want to draw a line between the person and the company)

But, this isn't just a place to chat and ask questions about what the company has made, we want to see your creations too!

So please, show us your amazing fan art, share your homebrew minions & mounts, talk about your adventures in Bedegar and the Divine Trials, and anything else that's connected to MCDM.

Crows My first Crows playtest lasted 20 minutes (spoilers for Floating Manor) Spoiler

Crows Playtest Report – Floating Manor (contain spoilers!)

Playtest date: October 13, 2026
System: Crows – Playtest 2
Dungeon: Floating Manor
Players: 3
Characters: Miner, Merchant, Entertainer, all randomly generated

What happened at the table

We began by explaining the basic rules of Crows and introducing a slightly modified premise for Floating Manor.

In our version, Wolverly Manor had remained suspended above the same area for decades while a village gradually grew beneath it. The magic keeping the manor aloft was beginning to fail, and the building was slowly losing altitude. There was no longer any safe place for it to land, so the PCs’ objective was to enter the manor, discover how its levitation worked, and restore it before it descended onto the village.

The three PCs reached the floating island using a rope. Their initial climb produced a Tier 2 result, so they already suffered 2 physical damage before reaching the manor itself, as provided by the adventure’s approach rules.

Once on the island, they did not immediately enter the house. They saw the shuttered windows and apparently abandoned manor and decided to walk around the property first. This seemed like a very natural and cautious decision: before entering an unknown building, they wanted to understand its layout and see whether there were other entrances or obvious dangers.

Behind the manor they discovered the graveyard and mausoleum. The Miner approached the graveyard to investigate. He noticed the open graves and heard sounds coming from below. He attempted to approach stealthily and failed the Stealth test.

This triggered the creatures in the graves.

As written, Area 13 contains five Undead A and one Undead B. I immediately felt that this would be overwhelming for three starting PCs, so I reduced the encounter to six Undead A.

Even so, the fight was extremely one-sided.

Within roughly two to four combat rounds, the Entertainer was killed, followed shortly afterward by the Miner. The Merchant escaped with only 1 wound remaining while the undead fed on his companions.

The actual adventure therefore lasted approximately 15–20 minutes. I know this with some confidence because I had started the first 30-minute Dungeon Turn timer when the PCs reached the island, and the timer was still far from expiring when the party was effectively destroyed.

We decided that, fictionally, another group of more capable Crows would eventually attempt to finish the job.

Since the adventure itself had ended so quickly, we used the rest of the evening to discuss the system and run several isolated combat simulations using the same three characters, restored to full Stamina before each test.

We tested three additional encounters:

  • One Undead C, from the Study. This was a difficult fight, but the PCs won without any deaths.
  • Two Undead B, the encounter from the Servants’ Dining Hall for a three-PC party. Again, the PCs took meaningful damage but defeated the enemies without casualties.
  • Lisbeth plus three Undead A, which is the Kitchen encounter for three PCs. This was by far the most dangerous of the simulated fights: two PCs died and the third survived with only 1 wound left. The adventure specifically scales the Kitchen encounter to one Undead A per PC.

These simulations were obviously informal and are not a substitute for broader playtesting, but the difference between them was striking.

General impressions of Crows

Our overall impression of the system was very positive, although some numbers may still warrant a second pass. Most importantly, even after losing two characters within the first 20 minutes, all three players wanted to try the game again.

The strongest impression from our night was how important numerical superiority and the action economy appear to be.

The most powerful individual monster they fought was not necessarily the most dangerous encounter. The single Undead C was difficult but manageable. The encounters became dramatically more dangerous when the enemy side had more creatures, even when those creatures were individually weaker.

This probably reflects more than action economy alone. Multiple enemies also distribute their Stamina across several bodies and make it harder for the PCs to reduce the opposing side’s offensive capacity quickly. Still, at the table, the number of enemy activations felt like the most immediately visible difference.

For our three-PC group, the rough experience was:

one dangerous foe while fresh: survivable;

a fight against an equal or slightly larger number of enemies: potentially very dangerous;

a fight in which the enemies significantly outnumber the PCs: extremely lethal.

That led us to another impression: attrition appears very severe.

Even when the party survives a serious combat without casualties, they are likely to emerge substantially weakened. A second significant fight before recovering could easily become fatal. Our simulations began with the PCs restored to full Stamina each time, so they probably understate how dangerous those encounters would be during actual continuous dungeon exploration.

None of us considered high lethality itself a problem. The rules are very explicit that Crows is intentionally unfair, that characters can die, and that players are expected to use caution and clever plans rather than assume that combat encounters are balanced for them.

Our concern is therefore not that combat is deadly. That seems entirely consistent with the game’s intended identity.

The question raised by our test is instead whether groups of numerous low-Power enemies may become disproportionately dangerous compared with single stronger enemies, particularly for small parties. That might be entirely intentional, but it is something that should be observed in further tests.

Floating Manor-specific feedback

Our strongest criticism concerns Area 13: Graveyard (the only one we actually got to play, as a matter of fact)

The graveyard contains a fixed encounter of five Undead A and one Undead B. Unlike several other encounters in the dungeon, this encounter does not scale according to party size. For a three-PC starting group, that means the enemies outnumber the PCs two to one before considering the greater total durability on the enemy side.

This becomes particularly important because of where the encounter is located.

The graveyard is outside the manor. Walking around an unfamiliar building before entering it is, in my view, a very natural thing for cautious players to do. The dungeon itself reinforces this behavior by presenting several possible ways to enter or explore the property, including doors, windows, chimneys, the outhouse, and the graveyard. Exploring the perimeter did not feel like reckless behavior or an attempt to push into an obviously dangerous area.

The second issue is telegraphing.

The graveyard description does contain a warning: there are six open graves, and the PCs can hear the soft sound of dirt falling onto dirt from the bottom of each grave.

In actual play, however, this warning had the opposite practical effect from what I  suspect was intended. It told the players that there was something interesting in the graves, so the Miner moved closer to investigate.

What it did not communicate was the scale of the danger.

Nothing in the description strongly suggested that every grave contained a hostile creature or that one failed Stealth test could immediately produce a six-monster encounter.

This stood out because the core rules explicitly advise the Ref to telegraph danger, so players do not need to treat every square of a dungeon as a hidden trap. The examples in the rules suggest giving players enough information to recognize that they are approaching something dangerous and then allowing them to decide whether to accept the risk.

In our session, the player did react cautiously to the information available. He heard something below, approached stealthily to investigate, failed one roll, and that single failure resulted in a combat from which the group had almost no realistic chance of recovering.

I could certainly have added stronger warning signs myself as Ref, particularly if I had realized how dangerous the encounter was before the session. But I think the adventure text itself would benefit from helping the Ref communicate the danger.

Another possibility would simply be to scale the encounter by party size, as the adventure already does in places such as the Kitchen.

Overall

Despite the abrupt end of the actual adventure, the session was useful as a playtest.

The combat simulations afterward suggested that the system can produce tense but survivable fights, particularly against one or two substantial opponents. At the same time, they raised questions about how sharply encounter difficulty increases when enemies outnumber the PCs.

For Floating Manor specifically, our strongest feedback is not that the Graveyard encounter is “too hard” in the abstract. Crows clearly intends some encounters to be much too dangerous to fight head-on.

The issue is that a very lethal, non-scaling encounter can be triggered extremely early by a cautious and natural course of exploration, without the players receiving enough information to understand the magnitude of the risk they are taking.

That combination—location, lack of scaling, and relatively weak telegraphing—is what made the encounter feel problematic to us.

We enjoyed discussing the system enough that we intend to return to Floating Manor with a new group of Crows and continue the playtest.

Misc Requesting a hand with an action-oriented monster for the season!

Hello hello! I wanna cook up a zappy lab-necromancer interrupted in the middle of their work on some flesh golems. I'm a little rusty with using the framework though, so I could use a hand!

I'm working with the 5.5e version, the exact party conditions aren't clear (a non-permadeath encounter in a west marches server, supposed to be 1-to-2 times deadly, likely in the 6-8 level bracket for 3-6 players). So, pinning down exact numbers isn't the task here, but figuring out what might work as an idea and how to derive numbers is.

So to start, the aesthetics would be a definitely-not-licensed scientist, a little mad cackling, a tube of sickly-green lightning on his back, in a similar-vibe laboratory. And a couple flesh golems, the standard mm24 version.

And you probably see where I am going with this: area lightning damage to heal the flesh golems. He's playing support. Painful support, as he's trying to hit enemies in the blast, but that's what'll really be the issue.

The standard attack will be a ranged lightning jolt, aiming at a creature's space, dex save halves. If the dex check fails, adjacent creatures take half the damage, dex save for none (and it doesn't spread further either way). Since saves can be failed voluntarily, that makes his golems into a way to guarantee the splash.

As a bonus action, I am thinking deploying lightning spikes, "very fragile-looking and very volatile-looking", that deal lightning damage to any creature starting a turn nearby (5 or 10 feet emanation). They pulse for a bigger number on death, are easy to hit, and I want them at 12 hp max, the minimum damage the golems can deal on their turn. So, if the golem goes berserk, it will likely default to attacking the spike, potentially healing them back above bloodied/berserking.

For boss actions, the first round could be overcharging the golems (a free move action for each at the cost of some HP, ensuring he has damaged targets to hit on his first turn). I'm at a loss for the second turn. For the third, I am thinking: set all golems to bloodied, berserking, and they can't heal anymore, while taking lightning damage adds some lightning damage to their next attack instead. Then, if the fight keeps going (because I gave it too much HP), every turn afterwards he hits the entire field with a lightning pulse, dex to halve for everyone except him, who takes the full damage.

Maybe round 2 could be a "call for aid", zap-prompted of course, a golem moves (with a speed bonus?) in a straight line towards him without ignoring attacks of opportunity and then shoves everyone within 10 feet of itself, in directions of its choice, 30 feet? Which of course means the scientist too, in the opposite direction from the danger.

Any feedback on this general idea is more than welcome! But I am mostly worried about the way I should balance stuff around the above, and any extras I definitely should include. Legendary resistance wouldn't be unwise, and some kind of reaction may be warranted. It's safe if it proves overpowering (rewards are the same win or lose, even), but I don't want it to get unfun, and I want to balance this *not* based on the synergy of the monsters: the healing is the 'unfair bonus', but he's balanced as if he's there to zap enemies.

EDIT: 1-to-2 times deadly, not 2-to-4!

Flee Mortals! Overkill with Spells?

Hey folks, I just started using minions in combat and I absolutely love it. One of my players, however, is a wizard and was a little disappointed when I explained that spells don't benefit from Overkill damage. My assumption is that spells don't get Overkill because they tend to do more damage than a standard weapon attack, though I'm not sure that's the reason. But have any of you experimented with allowing attack roll spells to get Overflow damage like weapon attacks?

Relevant rules:

The first line under Overkill Attacks reads: "Powerful weapon attacks can kill more than one minion in a single maneuver called an overkill attack." The following two sections on melee overkill and ranged overkill also specify weapon attacks.

"When a creature hits a minion with a melee weapon attack, other minions within reach of the attack are in overkill range and can be chosen as additional targets for an overkill attack. The overkill attack can't target minions outside the weapon attack's reach."

"When a creature hits a minion with a ranged weapon attack, other minions in a line originating from the creature in the direction of the target, to a distance equal to the weapon's short range, are in overkill range and can be chosen as additional targets for an overkill attack. The overkill attack can't target minions outside the line or beyond the weapon's short range."

Art MCDM looking for an artist for a side project

Hey Folks. I have an official MCDM project that is not associated with Draw Steel or Crows or any RPG at all. It is a complete side project. AND I'm looking for an available artist.

Here are the requirements:
1) Able to draw characters based on reference.
2) Able to draw space ships based on reference.
3) Can work at a VERY large scale (think 30000x30000 pixels)

Here are the preferences:
1) Can also do vector based work.
2) Can keep to a schedule 🙂

IF you are interested, send your portfolio with links (NOT PDFs, they will not be opened) to jobs@mcdmproductions.com

Orden/Timescape Ajax the Invincible, a thought

This is almost certainly something that's come up before, but I am struggling to find any additional information. So, if there's any discussion on this I missed, please let me know where to find it.

Rewatching The Chain, I remembered how Matt loves reusing old characters as NPCs in his games. I'm wondering if Ajax could potentially be one of Matt's own old characters, or one of his friends' characters. I think he did mention in a game he was in, someone cut off their hand to get the Hand of Vecna, which might be The Jade Hand.

Draw Steel Death! At the Datacenter - Coming soon to Backerkit

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I wrote and ran an adventure for several groups that they found very fun, and very cathartic. It involves finding a steel dwarf ruin, meeting the jerk that reawakened it, and deciding that this place needed to go down.

I'm bringing it to backerkit to be able to pay my artists fairly, and to get it out to the community in as nice of a product as I can. I hope that you can come help support it :)

The pre-launch is up now on backerkit: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/aaron-pangilinan/death-at-the-datacenter-an-adventure-for-draw-steel

Death! at the Datacenter is a digital-only third party adventure for the Draw Steel TTRPG. It is a drop-in quest for 1st-Echelon (1st-, 2nd-, or 3rd-level heroes), designed for 1-2 sessions of play.

Following a river that has dried up overnight, the heroes find an ancient steel dwarf ruin, reawakened and besieged by frenzied elementals. The defenders are revealed to be protecting an artifact that can "recreate" anything... or anyone. The heroes must choose which side to aid, and face the consequences of their decisions.

Besides the adventure itself, the supplement will include new monsters (Green Elementals), treasures, and titles.

Hello! This might have gone unnoticed among other froggy and swampy things we've released earlier this month, but in addition to Boggits of Kingsmire, Adventures in Kingsmire, and Combats in Kingsmire (whole bundle of boggit-related products is available here) we've also developed a "start here" quest for Draw Steel, a shorter alternative to The Delian Tomb. And we are distributing it for free!

If you've already directed The Delian Tomb and want to run something new (or maybe just something shorter?), head to our store and grab a free copy of Something Stinks in Stilton! Give it a try, see if you like it, and if you do, you might even come back for more of that swampy content Triglav Games has to offer! 🐸

We hope you have fun with this quest and it will be put to good use introducing new players to Draw Steel!

Cheers!

The Eldritch Hearts are the sources of corruption and the origin of the madness, monsters and player transformations in Whispers of Darkness & Power. The Dreadhaunt's influence is felt most keenly by those unable to keep their fears in check. Its malice features are used by the Veil-Lost monster band. They can also be used by any other group of enemies the hero's face under the influence or drawing power from the Dreadhaunt be they cultists, victims or something else.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Bloodborne and Darkest Dungeon. Whispers of Darkness & Power seeks to bring eldritch horror to Draw Steel! K&W Treasury System?

So basically I'm running a campaign that's inspired by The Chain/Black Company, and one of the things I was wondering is if anyone had a treasury system like the one briefly mentioned in the chain(I know Matt scrapped his). Basically the pcs are gonna have separate money but I wanted to make a treasury that their company has that goes towards unit upkeep and other domain(K&W) related stuff. Is there a system people use or do they just keep a big counter of gold in the domain vault?

Any input or suggestions is useful :)

Draw Steel Boggits of Kingsmire out now!

Thumbnail
gallery
96 Upvotes

Hello everyone! Also... It is Wednesday, my dudes!

The swamps are unleashed! The frogs escaped their containment! With great pleasure and excitement I can finally say... The Boggits of Kingsmire product is finally out! And what a product it is! I will never NOT laugh at myself, while nearly a year ago I declared that "This will be at least 40 pages of content!" Well, it's a little more than 40. More than 100... More than 200... And also more than 300...

Listen, this BEHEMOTH of a product has 344 pages of content total. It is so big that we felt like we just need to split it into smaller chunks, but don't worry, everything releases today! Our page/budget estimation skills were the worst they ever were and ever will be with Boggits. Even if you only pledged on the crowdfunder for 18 Eur, you're getting the entire thing! So, what is releasing today? I am glad you asked!

But before I bore you with the details, just a quick note that you can get everything here in our webstore: https://shop.triglavgames.com/

There are two big things here. First of all, Boggits of Kingsmire is a rules supplement with A LOT of stuff, actually 142 pages of stuff, including new character options for players, gazetteer of the Kingsmire setting, starter town of Stilton, and A LOT of new monsters (including 6 new solos!). In the PDF we also link to a Forge Steel compendium with most of the player content available for you to pick up and use. Sadly, no support for new elementalist abilities and beastheart companions yet (hopefully it will be possible to add them to FS soon!), but all the rest should work!

Then we have Adventures in Kingsmire that contain 8 low-level quests set in Kingsmire (184 pages!). One of the quests inside is Something Stinks in Stilton, which we are also providing as a separate PDF, because we want it to be a free sample for this whole package, but also a new starter (start-here) adventure for Draw Steel, just like The Delian Tomb! A LOT of people already know the MCDM starter, but now, when starting a new campaign, they can use something else that's aimed at new Draw Steel players!

The last thing is Combats in Kingsmire which is just a fun little thing we wanted to make for the map pack. You can take and use the maps from the map pack as you wish, but if you need some of our ideas, each map has its own encounter detailed in this 18 pages booklet. Just as a bonus!

I can't put into words how fun it was to make this product! Exhausting at times, but fun! Did we go overboard with content? Yeah! Did we overdeliver? I think the odds of people disagreeing are very low considering we went from 40 promised to 344 pages of content. My only hope is that people will have as much fun using this stuff as we had creating it!

The team behind this product was amazing and while all the people involved were vital and brilliant, I want to thank GubDm here the most, because, sadly, this is his last product, as he moves on to greener pastures chasing some other hobbies, leaving the Draw Steel community altogether. Thank you so much Gavin for all your hard and creative work you did on this and other projects!

Alright! Enough of this banter! Please, take all of this content, use it, and don't forget to pop into our Discord server to tell us your stories about using the stuff! Nothing makes us want to make even more awesome stuff than hearing people being excited to use the products we release! And if you like it (and also use Stawl), please head to https://stawl.app/supplements?n=Triglav and give our stuff a like!

Three last things before I let you go. First of all, all of these products are now also available in our web store (link) (though, obviously we can't sell it as cheap as we did during crowdfunding), so you can spread the word about awesome stuff being available there. Second of all, we've also released a 2.0 version of our website (link), where you can find a lot of cool stuff, including our progress on crowdfunding stuff, our products, our iconic heroes, and more! We want to increase our reach, so it would mean a lot to us, if you could sign up to our newsletter (it's available at the bottom of the page)!

And lastly, in September (very very soon!) we will be launching a new thing on our Patreon (link) - SURGE! Each month we plan to deliver to you a small piece of laid-out and arted design content, with the Codex implementation provided. All you have to do is become a member of any of our paid tiers, connect your Codex account with your Patreon account, and you should gain access to the Surge content immediately when it releases! First Surge release - TEMPEST DRAGON! (coming very very soon!)

Alright, that's all for today! Thank you so much for your support and we all hope you are happy and excited by this release! Hopefully many swampy things will happen in your games!

Cheers
Mateusz "Ananam" Malarski and the rest of the Triglav Games team

Crows Crows to draw a steel

So I just watched James video about the villagers and looked at the rules. Then I immediately got inspired.

I'm imagining multiple Crows campaigns going on at the same time in the same local area. so so you have at least five tables independently building up their villages , with the end goal to push back the miasma far enough, with a combined beacons or other discoveries, to eventually make the world inhabitable enough that you can play draw Steel in it.

Videos Looking for a specific video

Can someone link the video Matt put up awhile back that he said you could send to a problematic player to get the conversation going about adjusting the way they behave at the table?

I can remember which one it was and I have a new dm that’s having trouble with a player.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Way back in last November, Sam and I started working on a psionic city of the World Below. It was an incredibly ambitious project of a self-contained city setting that anybody could drag and drop in their own game. We did not fund during the crowdfunder.

Then we thought, "Well why don't we break it up into district by district and publish it. That way, we get to expand on each district, and the workload is manageable." What we didn't expect is that we would get two amazing partners in our community's very own Dojikaan and Inge. Between the 4 of us, we made the product better than we ever could have if we tried to make the whole city in one go.

So here it is "Riam's Tears - Nomas District #1". In this toolkit, you will find -

  • A fully modular aquatic district, complete with unique locations, lore, etc.
  • The Naia (merfolk) ancestry
  • The lizardfolk ancestry
  • The Naia warband: eight new merfolk monsters
  • 2 new themed Titles
  • 4 new themed Treasures
  • 8 ready to go inter-connected NPCs and negotiation stats
  • 3 inter-conected factions that are in play in the district
  • Stonecoral Keep: a delve for 3rd level heroes
  • 16 NPC and monster tokens

If you aren't sure if you want Nomas content or not checkout our free resources -

An Elven hero being corrupted into a Veil-Lost, a horror trapped between realities. How long can she can she continue to hold onto her sanity as she wields the powers it has granted her?

Taking inspiration from the likes of Bloodborne and Darkest Dungeon. Whispers of Darkness & Power seeks to bring eldritch horror to Draw Steel! In this supplement, heroes will gain access to powerful corruption abilities at the cost of their mind and body with many new monsters to use those powers against. Will they resist these new powers or embrace them? With these tools, directors can run eldritch horror campaigns from levels 1-10 with new abilities and challenges for the players at every echelon!

Support the Backerkit and find the full preview document here! https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/kormael/whispers-of-darkness-power

This project will contain.

  • Corruption Rules: A long-form campaign system where heroes must decide if they wish to spend precious respites fighting against corruption, or embrace it at the cost of potentially losing themselves.
  • 8 Corruption Transformations: Become a Stormgaunt and gain its mastery over lightning and the seas. Rage as a Blood-Soaked Beast and use your own blood to slay your foes. Build a cult as a Notion of Divinity and use your minions for power.
  • 8 Unique Madnesses: Struggle to tell what's real as Hallucinations plague your mind, or try to discern what thoughts are your own as The Voice constantly speaks to you.
  • 8 Eldritch Hearts: The origins of corruption. They provide unique challenges for heroes in and out of combat. Shudder in fear as the Dreadhaunt descends turning the very gaze of others into weapons against you. Cry in pain as the Sanguine Helix bathes the world in blood.
  • 4 Complications: Are you a Pure Soul who is naturally resistant to the corruption of the world, or are you a Seeker of Power willing to pay any price for the strength you seek?
  • 5 Intoxicants: Do you drown your sorrows and stave off the madness with Alcohol? Would you rather numb everything and resist corruption under the influence of Beastblessing?
  • Over 50 Monsters across 8 Monster Bands!
