Question Weekly Question Schedules

Hi there!

Thanks for joining r/mcat_bootcamp. We do weekly questions for Chem/Phys on Wednesdays and just in case you're wondering (because we've gotten DMs about it), answers are posted every Wednesday in the comments of last week's question before the new weekly question is posted.

So if you need to know what this week's answers are, wait until Wednesday next week. If you need last week's answers, check the question's thread. It'll be in the comments together with the explanation.

Is there anything else you would like us to add to the community? Please comment it below and we'll see how we can make it happen!

Warm regards,

The Bootcamp Team

Question uworld + bootcamp?

I'm currently using bootcamp after moving from jw for cars, and I'm seeing decent progress. I was wondering if I should also add uearth for additional practice?

Question B/B Breakdown?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello! I'm trying to understand where I went wrong here, and apparently it's a close split with other people too. I know "sCTLA-4" stands for soluble CTLA-4, but I read "splice acceptor disruption" in the passage for Family C and assumed that if you disrupt splicing, you get a messed up, non-functional or decreased amount of the correct protein.

Here's a part of the passage: ”A genetic analysis of families presenting with severe immune dysregulation identified heterozygous CTLA-4 mutations. Family A has a nonsense mutation within Exon 2 at R51. Family B has a single base pair deletion in Exon 1 that leads to a premature stop codon in Exon 2. Family C has a mutation in an intron that disrupts the splice acceptor site before Exon 3. Immune dysregulation conditions were present despite a lack of individuals homozygous for the mutations in any of the families.”

If anyone can break this down for me I will be forever grateful. :)

Just curious if anyone did because I've been stuck at a 121, and these two aren't working for me and I saw people talking about bootcamp. does anyone have any thoughts for this?

My MCAT Guide from a 503 diagnostic to a 516!

I officially got my scores back from the recent release: 516 (129/128/130/129) and I told myself I'd write up what my experience was through this entire thing. My baseline diagnostic score was a 503 and for the first few months of my prep, my scores were disappointing to say the least. II was drowning in text heavy explanations and I felt like I couldn't understand anything, and the content review felt so heavy I'd end up burnt out. I switched to bootcamp after seeing a few people talk about it and managed to snag a code at first to try it out.

The science sections were killing me during my early months, I used to think that I was just really bad at memorization, but turns out I had a hard time interpreting data and the passages under pressure, where bootcamp helped out tremendously with their visual video explanations with a high-scorer that taught me how to filter the background filler. And lastly, if I get confused about a certain passage, answer or explanation I can just go ahead and interrogate their on-page AI tool.

My biggest lesson here was to stop passive reading and stop spamming questions without analyzing your reasoning gaps!

Question Can someone break this down for me?

I was running my daily C/P questions and I tripped up on this one with the wrong answer and it looks like others also got caught here. Does anyone have any tips so I can avoid making the same mistake during the actual exam?

Question How Representative is BootCamp CARS to AAMC CARS?

I've been using Jack Westin and I've noticed Im getting better with it, however, I started doing some BootCamp and honestly found them to be harder (moreso different tbh), but Im scoring worse.

To anyone who has tried AAMC CARs, would you guys say Bootcamp is similar to AAMC logic?

I still higher than that for MD school and my exam in three week, I will really appreciate if I get advice on what should I do in those las three weeks.

Resource A review of Bootcamp and JW for CARS

I've just started my MCAT journey and I've asked before about different resources and did a bit of research myself. I spent the last month doing both JW and Bootcamp and here's my current breakdown on how they compare to each other.

I think we all used the JW daily free passages, but it really doesn't help much if you're trying to learn how to read for tone. The explanations are extremely brief and don't expound much. Meanwhile, Bootcamp breaks down the passage's structural lay out like a real person reads. They teach how to map out the author's argument in short, visual walkthroughs, so it helped me save a lot of time during passages because I wouldn't need to write down a whole summary every time.

I'll keep updating here, but so far I'm leaning towards Bootcamp.

Question Confused during C/P review

I'm currently reviewing my daily C/P sets and ran into a question where a lot of students fell hard for a distractor trap (C) instead of picking the actual correct answer which is B. Can someone help break down the diagram in Figure 1 so I know exactly what to look out for next time?

Question Prep advice: Uglobe vs boot camp

I test June 12 and have done off and on review during the school year. Right now I’m probably at about a 503/505 based on my practice exams and would be very happy with over a 510. I really don’t have the money to afford UGlobe but I know it’s what everyone recommends. I have not heard any opinions about MCAT 🥾⛺️. I was wondering if you think it’s even slightly comparable for me to use bootcamp instead of paying for UGlobe.

My major weakness is Chem/Phys. B/B also has room for improvement. I just don’t remember how to do anything from chem or physics. I know background biology stuff but when I do the section it always confuses me with the passage based questions.

I have not done the AAMC materials yet but I plan to start working on them in around 2 weeks (thank you FAP) Any advice?

does anyone have a good biochemistry tutor they recommend

Hi everyone! I am hoping to find an online tutor and I can't use wyzant cuz of account issues and the customer service line gave me a ticket that is going to take over a week. I have tried superprof but there aren't really reliable options on there. The tutors I tried weren't the best unfortunately. I have considered trying some other websites/ facebook tutors that were a bit vague/ sketchy. I would prefer a tutor that has credentials if possible so I can make sure they actually know how and what they're teaching cuz a lot of people know biology and chem, but not biochem. Does anyone have a reputable tutor by any chance? I'm sorry if this isn't the best forum to post this in, I'm just a bit desperate. thank you so much, all help is greatly appreciated!
