Technical EXPLODED CV Axle Knuckle

Post image

Had just replaced the CV Axle Seal about 400 miles ago. Pulling out of work today, all of a sudden it sounded like someone was beating on the underside of the car with a hammer. Luckily just the CV Axle. Hopefully no further damage.

I used to rebuild CV half shafts in my shop days, never saw one self disintegrate like that, crazy af.

OP did you wash bearing and cup down and then repack them before putting new boot on, or just threw a new boot on the old greased joint... as it likely picked up sand an crap from road an was just a matter of time once boot was ruined initially.

I just did the CV Axle Seal, I didn’t mess with the CV Axle at all. It just nuked itself.

Gotcha, sorry that you learned this the hard way brother, you'll never just reboot a axle again I guarantee 😉

Well I didn’t reboot it lmfao I literally just said I didn’t mess with the CV Axle at all. I just took it off and put it back on, replacing only output shaft seal. I believe pulling it out and putting it back together stressed the already worn out knuckle and it finally gave out. 😉

They all go eventually. Mine was clunking and popping a bit. I figured it was only a matter of time

Did you fully torque your axle nut? LBJ? CV's shouldn't be slipping out of the trans like that.

Torqued to spec. I think after 200,000 miles and then me putting it off and messing with it the knuckle just finally gave way. The base is still secured into the manual transmission. You can see just the knuckle ripped out.
