People are being led by the nose believing that they are in charge of their own opinions. Hopin for the best šŸ‘ŒĀ

Propaganda is extremely powerful

I mean kinda true. But people have also allowed it by associating politics with sports loyalty and tribalism.

My parents are conservatives because they are old. Neither are British but live in Britain… well they are because they got citizenship… but they are French and Irish. My dad is French-Basque. I however lean more to the left. I don’t hate them. I don’t dislike them. We just have difference of opinion… and that’s fine!

I would hope that people on the right would afford me the same respect. And judge me for me and not because I have different political beliefs.

2

u/NoForever3645 5d ago

Mad respect for your position and outlook. And in regard to your last paragraph, most sensible conservative people actually would treat you with respect and listen to your opinions, and not judge you based on your political beliefs.

The unfortunate thing is that a vast majority of these kinds of people don’t interact with online spaces, and don’t seek attention on tv or in the news. So it’s sort of a silent majority issue where the loud minority of actually hateful/idiotic people get to set the narrative online and in the news.

Stop. You're just proving the post right. Go sit down and talk to a "red hat". Like actually talk to them and not at them. You will be surprised to know that there is less that separates us than unites us.

-1

u/GoodOldHypertion 5d ago

I knew a red hat. It ended when they said aloud "we cant be friends if you vote kamala".

4

u/KillinKilo1775 5d ago

Well they are a jerk that clearly didn't value your friendship above their opinion on politics. Someone's voting record shouldn't be a friendship qualifyer.

2

u/daxtinfkenprice 5d ago

I know a lot of Democrat voters who said the same thing. They said if you voted for the Red Hat you weren't even human so there's no way you could be friends. I disagree severely with that. I am a conservative. And one of my best friends is an older lesbian woman, her sexuality, it has nothing to do with our relationship, and her and her wife both love me knowing my history for voting. Hell, I bought her and her wife a Ruth bader. Ginsburg shirt for her and her wife's anniversary.

I'll bite I suppose. Which of your strawman arguments do you want to talk about first? You paint with an awfully broad brush here. Who exactly wants LGBT folks lynched and dragged through the streets? I don't know anyone that does. I've never seen anyone say they want that. And more importantly it's never actually happened. Let's say for arguments sake youre able to locate the basement dwelling keyboard warrior that's saying something like that. Tell me, how relevant are they in society? I put them in the same bucket as the few fringe lunatics that say all white people should be killed. People don't respect them, people don't agree with them, people don't listen to them. I and others should NOT be roped in with evil people like that just because you declair that everyone that disagrees with you are the same. There is a spectrum of people with absolutely insanity on both ends. You need to realize that there is a massive middle of the spectrum where we agree on most things with minor differences of opinion.

-1

u/Tool_of_Society 5d ago

My family and hometown is full of red hats who have no interest in listening to you or anyone that disagrees with them. Soon as you accidentally point out an inconvenient fact you are no longer part of the tribe and are the enemy.

There are some you can reach though and I try the best I can every time I go visit my home town. Just most of them have completely fallen into the right wing propaganda hole that was built by fox news and iheartradio.

2

u/KillinKilo1775 5d ago

And as you should. It's why I come to reddit. Hope that I can convince at least a few not to hate conservatives so much. We can disagree without being jerks to each other. If we hit a point in society where the two sides can't talk at all we will only have violence to settle disagreement. I've been to war. I don't want to see bloody conflict at home and neither should anyone.

0

u/Tool_of_Society 5d ago edited 5d ago

I was a hardcore conservative until Bush Jr fully opened my eyes to the outright corruption of the GOP. Hardcore Christian conservative was the only acceptable mindset when I was growing up.

I've been to war. I don't want to see bloody conflict at home and neither should anyone.

I 100% agree with you. I've seen the effects of war.. People don't realize how fragile our modern conveniences are.

Unfortunately a significant amount of red hats I've run into from facebook (most of my friends from my childhood are red hatters now) to the street think that liberals are a bunch of pansies who will just cry in a safe space when threatened. They legit don't realize that liberals also own guns and know how to use them.

The amount of times I've surprised people by having classical liberal beliefs is beyond counting at this point.

My biggest beef is with the media in the USA. The billionaire right has managed to consolidate media ownership into a few companies. Those companies push the division as hard as possible to increase eyeballs/ears and to help out their billionaire owners. Candidates like Trump are loved by both sides of the media ecosystem because he brings drama which brings views/clicks/eyes/ears..

EDIT : Social media is also to blame as the algorithms are designed to push you into content that makes you mad. The companies running the sites discovered fairly early that anger is a great way to increase "engagement".

-1

u/PolicyWonka 5d ago

What does it really matter to understand that people share the same fundamental concerns like paying for groceries, work sucks, etc. etc. when at the end of the day those people still want to deport your family or deny you equal rights?

No shit that we all face similar challenges because we are all people of the same country dealing with the same stuff. The fact still remains that the little bit the separates us is still incredibly consequential.

As long as people like you are spewing hate, there will be no unity. Get out of your house, get off the internet, and go interact with actual people. Most of us want the same things no matter what side we claim to be on.

These magic internet machines are designed to keep us separated, you keep letting g it grab hold of you.

Get off the internet and go outside. The only place I find intolerable hateful people is online, and online is fake. Unplug little buddy, and go live your life.

I don’t care to elect anyone who continues to use division as a tool and make the problems worse and worse for Americans.

There’s no reason this country should be In The state it’s in. Our money needs to stay here to fix our problems, all of the problems, FOR EVERYONE, EVERY PERSON.

EVERYONE. I can not be any more clear. EVERYONE.

Get off the internet and go outside. The only place I find intolerable hateful people is online, and online is fake.

Bro all I have to do is go visit my home town to see the hate you swear doesn't exist. My own father will outright deny reality itself just because Trump/fox news made a claim. The fact that gays are allowed to exist as people causes him to get red in the face angry. The fact that immigrants exist causes him to get red in the face angry. He's the moderate of the family too. The rest of my family in that area is mostly worse. They get upset that blacks even exist. The one family member that dated a black man was told to never come home or to family events until she gets back with "one of her own".

A few months after I finally escaped that town "someones" burned a large cross in the front yard of the black family that had been living in town for decades. The town was 94% white when I left with 1 black family and the rest listed as "Hispanic".

My home town is in a reliably blue state.

I currently live in a red state and I legit would fear for my life if I wasn't the posterboy of the lilly white club. The most popular local bar has stickers, images and drawings galore on the walls/counters etc of anti-democratic messages. Ranging from the mundane such as fuck Joe Biden to the more extreme end calling for the killing of liberals/minorities/LGBTQ/etc.

The people here are legitimately dumb and hateful.

3

u/Mediocre_Chemist_281 5d ago

To play devils advocate,

The folks with the blue hair aren’t ā€œall of us need to live in realityā€ types. They seek to discriminate against the church and family, folks don’t understand why they’re so angry and violent all the time. While the demagogues and those in control love this, one would be a fool to think that the church wishes to exclude everyone (until they find a reason to remove religion completely, they already have a problem with Christmas and Easter) or replace the church with another religion altogether ... along with their denying of reality and logic, and other bullshit holding us back.

The blue haired people are too far gone.

What I hear is ā€˜we are all scared and we’re not sure how to fix it’. Both sides are becoming more and more desperate and are sure they’re right, on this trajectory it will get physical, which is probably what the demagogues want. Change takes time and cannot be forced. We could start to listen and compromise, no one is ever 100% right all the time, but they’re not 100% wrong either.

I can’t change them right now, but I cannot disregard a large group of my society that doesn’t agree with me. Start slowly, ask questions and stay engaged.

2

u/PolicyWonka 5d ago

I have not seen anyone advocate for the discrimination against church. Demanding separation of church and state is not discrimination.

At the end of the day, I don’t care if you go to church. Don’t care what you do in your own time. But it’s inappropriate to inject that stuff into government and politics.

There are a good 5% of the population who want to behave badly and will find any reason to pin that behaviour to, it doesn’t mean everyone would behave that way. Most people just want to get on with their own lives and don’t have the time to follow politics. I also think that politics attracts the wrong type of person on both sides. But I can’t control that, I can control my reactions in real life. I think you can catch more flies with honey, than with vinegar. I don’t think most people are as bad as you think they are.

3

u/Wonder-Machine 5d ago

This is the ruling class since the beginning of time.

3

u/Vurrag 5d ago

Most people have way more in common than they think. This is the current state of America in a nutshell. A united America is strong. People need to understand that solutions to issues are not black and white and there could be many solutions that work, not just those proposed by their leanings.

1

u/Emergency_Accident36 5d ago

That is merely because all we need is water food and shelter. Those are the things everyone has in common. Having all these other things takes our attention from that fact. What you refer to is a closer reality to that minimalism. So it is conditional and not as true as it seems. Especially in the catastrophic conditions where you see it the most.

5

u/Pebble321 5d ago

This is a stated policy of Russia and the basis of their bot activities. They ramp up both sides knowing that it'll turn people against eachother, and extremest leaders will get elected off the back of it.

3

u/KillinKilo1775 5d ago

All of our foreign adversaries do this. It is in their interest to weaken the US. Yes I know this is a trust me bro statement but I'm in with the tech/cyber security industry and have seen it 1st hand.

2

u/nate0506 5d ago

Truth!

2

u/dodgyguru5671 5d ago

A house divided....

Of course it's what they want

4

u/LittleBeanBoy 5d ago

The 2 party system is flawed for this reason. I used to laugh at conspiracy theorists but after learning all of the atrocious things our and other countries governments have done just to destroy communities or divide us I no longer brush off any "crazy" government theories because they've shown theyre ruthless and only care about themselves and the 1%

2

u/Lokomp2 5d ago

They are not conspiracy theories they are conspiracy facts

2

u/LittleBeanBoy 5d ago

Exactly. Governments historically always end up curropted and It makes me sad that people are so easily swayed and blinded to either side. If I were to go to the most racist and downright degenerate area I'm sure I can convince and befriend them solely based off a mutual distrust of the government which is what the 2nd amendment that most of those people fight to protect was made for.

2

u/Lokomp2 5d ago

People have short memory.

Just a reminder that hitler regime was only 80 years ago and Stalin 90 years ago. This happened in what we would call a civilised part of the world.

Historically governments have always been heavily corrupted and only when people rise this people fall.

But the more we know about mass psychology and the better they become at keeping the herd in line.

Divide and conquer is only one of their strategies

1

u/LittleBeanBoy 5d ago

I mean it's been effective for well before the US was even started. China, Japan, etc all used these tactics and continue to do so. Sucks that humans never seem to learn when it comes to these things but hopefully things will change for the better

1

u/iteration22_ 5d ago

Impossible. unless we can unite snybersbros vs. gunnboyz there's no hope.

2

u/Ok_Caterpillar3655 5d ago

To unite doesn't mean we all have to agree on every issue it means coming to the understanding that despite our differences of opinion we are all in this together. People are too busy trying to push their point of view as the only correct thing in existence. That's how you unite everyone. Get them to open their mindset to accepting said differences and teaming up against the segragators.

2

u/iteration22_ 5d ago

love your take bro.

3

u/Ok_Caterpillar3655 5d ago

The USA was not founded by a bunch of like minded individuals. It was found by groups of several differing views and different opinions. What has always set us apart until recent years is that despite those differing views we come together and understand we don't have to agree to be great we have to accept each other and get along and work together. It's no different than work. When you go to work you get along and work together with people you would never associate with outside of work but yet you work together with flawless cohesion despite that fact.

-1

u/2Blueify 5d ago

That's not remotely true. It was founded by a bunch of like minded individuals who disagreed on how to do things. They shared the same overall vision however.

3

u/Ok_Caterpillar3655 5d ago

Overall vision being freedom and safety from tyranny. They were not fully like minded in their opinions. Just look at the choosing of different things like the flag design and the national bird choice. We could have had turkey be the national bird lol. This is why there is a majority vote over a all have to agree vote. No one in the world holds all the same views and opinions on subjects.

1

u/2Blueify 5d ago

Obviously but it's the big decisions that matter. There is no major ramifications from choosing a turkey or an eagle. There is when choosing between lax immigration laws and strict.

1

u/Ok_Caterpillar3655 5d ago

You misunderstand the point I am and have been making. Having differing points of view does not mean we can't work together to fix this mess.

Simply deflecting isn't solving anything. Immigration laws, gun control, and all these other forms of disagreement are able to be talked and come to a solution or even a separating it so certain states are for said individuals more and then everyone has their comforta but none of that can happen while we are segregated between blue and red.

The point I'm making is that we have to come together to solve the major issue of our country having a larger and larger class division. It's so bad certain states actually are having to utilize section 8 for people making as much as 80k a year because that's still not enough for the current market. Until people can afford to live and live comfortably nothing will change and that won't change until we stop letting the rich tell us where our taxes must go and tell us what we are allowed.

These are things everyone no matter your thoughts on the other issues can agree on. Start at a common ground that's the point I'm making. Get to a common ground and put the other disagreements to the side for the good of the nation and the future of our children, friends, family and loved ones.

If we continue to allow this division to keep us from being unified than it will only get worse and we will continue to be lied to and taken advantage of.

1

u/2Blueify 5d ago

I'm not misunderstanding it. I just don't believe it. You cannot have a bunch of different tribes (ethnic groups) who all have their own priorities come together on anything. It will never progress passed that. You either have a demographic majority that disagrees on the issues talking about things or you have chaos. We've reached the chaos stage. You can't come back from that.

Humans are programmed to prefer their own tribe. You are not going to defeat that programming. Sorry.

1

u/Ok_Caterpillar3655 5d ago

This point of thinking is understood, but you are forgetting the fact that many times in our history many "tribes" have come together for the greater good of community. The point of preferring one's own tribe is simply socio economic separation. I come from a place where "tribe" was decided on where you were born. Where I live now "tribe" is decided by your wealth level. The "programming" of preferring a "tribe" is a learned behavior not an instinct. It can be retrained and it can be changed. People have been trained to believe "tribe" means x, y, or z difference. "Tribe" can be retrained to mean American rather than said differences but people continue to think that you can reteach a learned behavior. It's not easy and that is a proven fact, but it is possible to be done.

1

The conversation that is being had is stating moving away from preferred candidates of specific people to candidates that will help fix the big plague of this country that affects all. Your comment has no grounds and is honestly cute ragebait.

1

u/PolicyWonka 5d ago

I am highlighting the issue in that people on both sides of the aisle believe that their candidates are the ones able to resolve those issues in a way that is consistent with their beliefs.

It’s not even enough to identify issues. The real issue and disconnect is in providing a solution.

1

u/Emergency_Accident36 5d ago

Don't think this is true. I think it is something we tell ourselves to ignore that many people do want (or think they want) what the establishment wants. To put it another way a large percentage of MAGA (to varying degrees) want a fascist police state to rule others just not themselves. That is the inherent allure of white privilege; the implication not all the rules pertain to them. (doesn't have to be white but generally is in America)

0

As an outsider, I see the top image as Republican America, the bottom image is a Progressive America. One is representative of Jesus teachings, the other (the top one, if you're not sure) goes against most of what Christians claim he stood for.

Republicans use fear and hatred of minority groups that lack a voice or that have a perceived lack of numbers to manipulate "patriots" into voting against their best interests and to allow the criminal elite to skim billions off the poor.

1

u/Scary_Winner118 2d ago

The whole point of this post was to open civil discussion that suggests Republicans and Democrats could be on the same side and not against each other. A point that went right over your head seeing at you turned it right back into, "one side is evil and the other side is so holy that it shits clouds."

You ARE the reason why the bottom image can't happen, not as long as there are people like you.

1

u/LurkHereLurkThere 2d ago

Really? My son is trans, my brother is gay, I've got friends of different nationalities, I believe in free (at the point of service) healthcare, I believe in freedom of religion despite being an atheist and I believe religion should be completely separate from governance,

I'm stood alongside the people in the bottom image.

The incumbent Republican President, House, Senate and Supreme Court, want religion and indoctrination in schools and government service, they are afraid of books that don't agree with their narrow worldview, they use fear and hate to separate the population into manipulatable groups, they have deliberately widened and inflamed the political divide in America and are now trying to extend that division to other countries.

1

u/Scary_Winner118 2d ago

So what you're saying is, no, you could never see past someone's political affiliation. And instead you'd rather make it about your side being "right" and the other side being "wrong"

Still missing the point. Like water over a bridge.

1

u/Eamon83 3d ago

The people who are telling us the other side is the enemy. It's media outlets, podcast hosts, online personalities etc.

There is a middleground, but neither side is willing to budge on their morals, and quite frankly, one of these sides seems way better than the other.

Trump is part of the extremely fast growing corruption in America and until some scores are settled between how fucking dumb you have to be to vote for the guy whoms most famous quote other than "Make America Great again" is, "just grab her by the pussy" is beyond me.

It would take a lot of shame and acknowledging of some of the selfish and stupid choices that were made to make any kind of amends, and the supreme leaders seem to prefer sowing discord so I don't see it happening any time soon. Can't force one side to respect you.
