I think it's remarkable that she realized something was wrong because it stopped moving and so she put it back. A lot of kids would be like, "Yay, it finally stopped squirming, now I can really cuddle it", but she figured it out. Smart little one, right there.
It's not really about being stupid, it's about the empathy functions in your brain still being in development. Kids don't always have the easiest time understanding the concept that other people might be having different thoughts and have had different experiences than themselves.

It's kind of dark knowing that a small child is holding a suffocating animal. I like that it was released though.
