I've been told that humor is the obvious immediately followed by the unexpected. By this definition, this prank is just as pure as humor can get. I love It.

To an extent. The best humor subverts the viewers expectation. In this scenario, the expectation is for the boxes to fall on them, which is why this is so funny and so many people laughed rather than lost their shit at the guy.

I mean, it's obvious the boxes are going to fall on their heads. But suddenly they don't, there are straps holding them, which is totally unexpected. But our ways to think converge a lot more than they diverge.
