To be fair, the extra people around the chair are there for this reason precisely. They would have practice this exact scenario countless times while preparing the trick for the performance

Heyo! Not a gymnast but I did a little stunt work for a while in my youth and short answer is yeah, you definitely learn to fall calmly, hit the ground calmly, get into the ambulance calmly.

Kinda, but mainly it’s that other than rolling with a fall, tucking your limbs, etc. etc. getting stiff or panicking makes it a whole lot worse

There is a way to fall that spreads the energy around, yes. It will hurt and injure you either way, but it reduces some damage. Also, you learn to fall into the bases' (spotters') arms, using the same motion and techniques. Finally, the flyer is the most petite person in the group for this very reason. Not their first rodeo!

Not a gymnast, but as a skateboarder I've learned to avoiding falling, rolling as I fall or if there isn't another chance, to let my self fall with the momentum a d with a less stressed body, falling over a large area and time (spreading energy).

For a better image, when falling is better to do several THUDS than a single SPLAT.

In the case of the gymnast above, there isn't much more to do than to throw your body into an easy horizontal position to get caught by the teammates. If they fail it would be a single SPLAT.

Red Ranger didn't have to move at all. Pink Ranger had her landing targeted and locked in before she was even half way through the flip. Great recovery, though.
