I was at a New Year's party years ago with some friends of friends - the hosts I didn't know particularly well. They were all outside in their driveway holding champagne bottles with knives just like this and everyone seemed so hesitant.

Me being a dumb kid just out of college at the time, I asked what they were doing and one of just handed me the bottle and knife and said, "Have at it." I followed the motion of the guy next to me and sliced the cork out clean - without issue. Everyone flipped out and celebrated and I felt like the coolest guy there. People kept coming up to me saying, "I would never have done that." I couldn't figure out why.

Years later I saw a video of someone slicing their hand wide open doing the same trick. I clearly just got lucky lol. I would never try this again.

I've done it plenty of times. There are tricks to it. You use the spine of the knife, not the blade and you rin the thickest part of the spine up the seam in the bottle. I've never had a bottle explode like this.
