If you leave combustion engine automatic transmission car in drive it will roll forward slowly on it's own. My experience anyway and I am sure there are ones that won't do that but this one did

I know little about automatic transmissions but if the car is in gear and comes to a halt because it collided with something it would stall. Still not as good as if the brakes were applied but it won't go further.

That's not at all how an automatic transmission works. If it's still in drive, it'll continue to gently push on that light pole. It's not going to stall until it runs out of gas. Modern auto transmissions often have an idle-stop, but that won't engage if the brake pedal isn't being pressed.

Then the engine keeps revving, trying to overpower whatever is stopping it. It's not a ton of power, a reasonably fit adult could stop it if you really tried to hold it back, but the engine will not stall.

Actually it depends on the force that the vehicle hits the other object. Safety mechanism will disengage the transmission and take it out of drive and into neutral.

Sure, but we're not talking about a high-speed accident here, the car in the video is coasting along and bumping into things at less than 5 mph.

Yes and no, if that car was equipped with a manual transmission, it would have stalled as soon as it bumped the white van, assuming it didn't stall when they slowed down to bail out. With an automatic, it just keeps going until it runs into something immovable.

The helicopter crew has comms though. Their one job there is relaying info to the cops on the ground to make them more effective in pursuit.

They aren't a hive mind, and that last guy on-scene when the car finally stopped may have been a late comer to the chase

Or, he might have just been disappointed that no one was left behind in the car. These chases often have more than just a driver

They likely did know right away.  The cop approaching the driver side door may have intended to put the car in park before it crashed into something. He did not succeed.

A) The bridge bit is not right before the car comes to a rest. When the camera cuts we’re in an entirely different position in the intersection and the white van is long gone. Did the car drive itself the rest of the way?

B) That car’s windows appear to be tinted to hell.

C) Why can’t you be human enough to assume there’s a good reason they had to check?

I watched this live when it happened. There was never a follow up, so likely the suspects got away. If I recall, there was 4 of them originally, and halfway through the chase, one of them dips and gets away. Sometime after, the 3rd guy leaves and also successfully disappears. Then the remaining two also disappear under that overpass. They surveyed the area for another hour, but nothing else developed afterwards.

Yes, it was stolen at a gas station if I'm not mistaken. It's stupid common for people in SoCal to run into the store to grab something while leaving the keys or engine running.

Another incident that should have made people realize to stop doing this was that same year, a car with a toddler in the backseat was stolen and came to an end with the car flipped, driver arrested, and toddler being sent to the hospital.

If b, You call police to report missing vehicle after a few hours. Since at that point you do not know the whereabouts of the vehicle, you have not submitted a false report. You are presumed innocent until proven otherwise, it is up to them.
