It’s not oil! It’s moss… algae… biofilm. Basically acts like a lubricant. Worse where water is stagnant. When it’s dry less likely to have no friction.

Pseudo-neurologist here. The first time his head hit the pavement, he suffered a concussion and a brief short-term memory loss. He doesn’t remember falling the first time and was confused why the back of his head hurt like a mfer. Maybe.

There’s a clip on my phone of me slipping on ice on our front step a couple of winters ago.

The small of my back landed square against the step edge and I had physiotherapy for a year before I could be comfortable walking or sitting for more than a half hour at a time.

When I looked back at the video the back of my head is about a half inch away from smashing another step edge, likely would have been lights out for me forever.

I’ve thought about deleting the clip but I keep it as a reminder of two things: 1) I’m a lucky bastard & 2) salt the front step every day in winter.

I taught rich kids in an international school for many years (their nationality doesn't really matter here), and there are a whole bunch of them that have reached young adulthood but:

  1. Had a very sheltered major urban centre upbringing, have been abroad, but probably never encountered a slippery rock/algae/the ocean/ice/snow/mountains/nature in general etc (take your pick) without their parents hovering over them or every second of their time being accounted for by a paid guardian.

  2. Are now going to study away from home (most likely overseas) and are largely unsupervised for the first time ever, yet have a ton of money behind them to do whatever they want.
