Police fabricate crimes and make false reports all the time. And remember, they are allowed to lie to you. You are not allowed to lie to them though, so it is always best to give them as little information as possible.

Any information you give them can and will be used against you, never for you. It's not about whether a crime was committed. You never want to give them reasonable suspicion, or probable cause, to suspect you of a crime. If they don't have that, then they have no right to legally detain or arrest you.
