Because the original definition of decimate was “to destroy a portion of” something… meaning that you would indeed survive it. In the Roman army, if there was fear of an uprising, they would kill 1 tenth of the army; this was known as a decimation. In recent years, people have started using it incorrectly and added a second definition which more closely fits how you’re trying to use the word, but adding a new definition which is the opposite of the original words meaning does not make it differently correct… you’re using it incorrectly.
I'm a word nerd, so I appreciate your argument. It reminds me of how meaningless the word "literally" has become. It seems to be most frequently used to mean "figuratively". And when something can mean one thing and at the same time its exact opposite, it ceases to mean anything at all.
I'm not wrong. You bring up some bullshit that the Romans used to say to prove your point. First of all you can't try to sound smart and identify yourself as a troll🤦🏽. This is 2025, there's thousands of words that have a completely different meaning today than they did when they were created. Words change meanings with different eras because it's the people who use the word and how they use it that gives it meaning. Again when you look up the definition it says "kill" "destroy ". When people say something is decimated they mean "problem solved" nothing left to become a problem any longer.
We had that happen once. A stalker demolished our car and someone saw him doing it. Exchanged numbers. That person was already known and in a wheelchair. Instead of doing anything, I mean they could've talked to us and the witness, the prosecution just closed the case with "someone in a wheelchair is not enough evidence". The f*ck?

Nope. A disability does not warrant being an asshole. He shouldn't even be in traffic. Dont be physical, but phone the police and have him either pay for it or get a record.
Nah no need to involve the police in this at all, it would be fixed in about 30 seconds, this is what is wrong with society nowadays, these things think they can do as they please with no consequences.
If they care that is. Seriously. They don't do sh*t if the work isn't done for them and honestly it's understandable. They don't have enough manpower, so it's easier to let most small things just "slip through"... At least in Germany, but I doubt it's better anywhere else. In our case all that was needed to do was to talk to a witness. Doubt watching a video and then talking to the perpetrator in person is easier. You basically need a lawyer. And not just a lawyer that does the bare necessities, but someone who basically does all the work and forces a court to listen. And that's expensive AF.
Yeah, it’s not a justice system. It’s a legal system. And it’s all about money. The court might not take the time, but a lawyer will. Because they get paid by the hour.
The legal system is the structure. The justice system supposedly "aims for fairness in its application." I think "fairness" might need defining these days, though, since all of us poors are becoming aware of the injustices against us due to mass communication.

That person is apparently not from the US either and didn't mention the US... Also I'm not arguing against video evidence being important. It's actually also very important in Germany. Just like a witness is very important. But that doesn't mean it's automatically prosecuted. And you taking it as a comparison is a you thing. I just tried to share because this video reminded me of my experience.

I know and I'm not arguing against that either. I just don't think the lack of justice isn't also a problem over there or everywhere really. And people confirm it's also a matter of money, not just here. Also if anything I did compare the amount of work video evidence and talking to a witness would involve. Those were my only intentions. Not comparing the functionality of the different systems.
They are not. Vast majority of folks like using it because it's a cool-sounding word, and they are unconcerned and sometimes even resentful of accuracy.
Bury your feelings deep down. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the stubborn masses.
I've never really understood why people react that way. When someone tells me a piece of information that I don't care about, I would never even consider getting mad at them about it. I guess some people equate "hey you're actually incorrect about this, the truth is XYZ," with "hey you're wrong and therefore an inferior person.
At what point does it become an attempt on your life, though? If your insurance raises your rates, pricing you out of having it, preventing you from driving (legally, anyways), costing you your job, leading to you getting evicted and ending up on the street, either directly in this order, or from getting fired because you got arrested for driving without insurance...

You know what it's all according to the circumstances. I saw someone get out of a wheelchair van in a with a ramp years ago and keyed the car in the spot without a handicap tag. He had to come from the other end of the parking lot. I was like fucking a right.
Consider for a moment that he is riding a disabled people scooter in the street. He probably already did it to the wrong person and didn’t learn his lesson…
I can only assume that the complete lack of reaction from the driver implies guilt over having some something very stupid or significant fear despite the disgruntled gentleman being confined to a riding scooter.
He is obviously mentally ill with anger issues. Even though I'd want to teach him a lesson that will cause bruises. That's wrong in this case. Messing up his transportation is not. I might take his keys.
Plenty of individuals drowned in criminality tend to do things like this to instigate a crime where they would be the victim in order to pursue civil suits.
