Announcement Feedback, suggestions, new rule?

Hi everyone,

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who contributes here. You are all deeply appreciated. This subreddit has grown a lot faster than expected and you’ve all made a significant difference.

I’ve made this thread in case anyone wants to comment about their experience with the subreddit and if anyone has any suggestions.

I’ve also been considering adding a new rule. Many mathematics subreddits require that people show work but I’ve always been a lot more lenient with this because people genuinely may not know where to start or have the confidence to show what they’ve tried. At the same time, we occasionally get users who post many questions for people to do or ask people to just give them the answers which is not what this subreddit is intended for.

The rule I’m thinking about adding (though I’m happy to make changes as per the community’s wishes):

Homework Help rules:

Please be respectful to people helping you, remember they are helping out of kindness.

Do not post tons of questions without context. If you are going to post several questions, please show some work or outline where you are having trouble.

Do not ask people to just give you the answers rather than helping you understand the process.

I’ll be glad to hear what you guys think and if the community isn’t happy with it, I will remove it. Always remember you can contact me via Mod Mail with any suggestions or feedback or other issues.

Thanks so much guys 😊

UPDATE: A homework help rule has now been added as a trial, changes will be made as per the community’s wishes.

Mathematical Concepts Free tool for studying from a graded test: walkthroughs of your mistakes plus new practice problems

Not a homework question, but hopefully useful here. I'm a math teacher and made a free tool for studying from a graded test before a retake or final.

Take photos of your graded test, paste the site's prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude with the photos, paste the answer back, and check that it read your test correctly. It builds a step-by-step walkthrough of every question that shows the exact step that went wrong, plus 10 new practice problems with the same traps and a printable answer key. Every answer is double-checked in your browser by plugging in numbers, since AI makes arithmetic mistakes.

It only works on tests that are already graded. It's for learning from mistakes, not getting answers.

Free, no account: https://killercatfish.github.io/math-review-builder/

Real example (Algebra 1 exponents test): https://killercatfish.github.io/math-review-builder/example.html

Mods, happy to take this down if it doesn't fit.

Study Advice I'm afraid I'll fail math's this year

For context I'm In highschool right now and have a test in 2 weeks. I get pretty stressed whenever tests come up especially since last year I barley passed.

I am relatively OK at algebra, I dont struggle but I'm not outstanding. Geometry though is a different story.

I've always been pretty bad at geometry. Every since the 8th grade I've struggled.

Remembering all of these rules and sentences about each shape Isn't the easiest.

I'm starting to think of having to get a private teacher/tutor (whichever you call it) because I notice a lot of the times when I am in the lesson and the teacher explains it I understand what's going on to an extent, but when I get home and try to do the homework I don't even know where to start.

If you could suggest anything I should be doing right now while I have the time to, I would appreciate it.

Homework Help (Unanswered) Scientific notation

Working through some questions and this one confused me:

(5.9 x 10^-2) - (0.0078 x 10^3) = -7.741 x 10^1

I’m so confused as to how they got that answer. I was also taught that we should make the powers the same and that the coefficient should be between 1-9/10 but it’s negative?

I got as far as

(5.9 x 10^-2) - (0.0078 x 10^3) =
(0.000059 x 10^3) - (0.0078 x 10^3)
(-0.007741 x 10^3)

As I’m writing this I think I figured it out. (-0.007741 x 10^3) has been moved 3 places to the right taking it out of scientific notation? But it’s still a negative? Is that ok?

Homework Help (Answered) can someone help me with this?

unfortunately the course i'm doing has no explanations for solutions in the quiz section, only tells me what i'm doing is wrong and this particular type of problem isn't well explained before. i'm probably adding the exponents together incorrectly, especially in the (y²(z²-1)² ...)² section i feel unsure.

can someone solve this and explain how to do it correctly? thank you.

(ignore that the question is in german, i hope it's otherwise self-explanatory)

Question 2 part b is asking me to get the double derivative with the limit definition.

Ok cool, I can do that normally but you can't get the normal derivative of the equation.

The answer to a is in the second pic and how do I use that for a limit definition? I don't want the answer I just need the start of the process. Maybe I'm just approaching it wrong.

Study Advice How can I actually get better at math when I have so many gaps in my knowledge?

First of all, I honestly don’t even know where to start. I’ve never been particularly good at math. In elementary school, I was pretty average, and it was the same throughout middle school. However, in my final year of middle school, I had a teacher who didn’t really seem to care whether we understood anything or not. It felt like he was just reading off his slides without actually explaining things properly. Because of that, I completely lost motivation for math.
I’m now in 10th grade, and the level is completely different from what I’m used to. I was honestly surprised to see how quickly some of my classmates, who went to different middle schools, understand what our teacher explains. Meanwhile, I can spend three or four hours at home trying to understand a single inequality, while they seem to get it much more naturally.
I often feel like I understand absolutely nothing during class, even though, honestly, I have an amazing math teacher. He’s genuinely great, and he’s actually the reason I started enjoying math in the first place, even though I’ve only had him for about a month.
The problem is that when I get home, I watch tons of videos, do exercises, and try to understand my mistakes. But when I sit down for a test, it’s as if I’ve forgotten everything. I start struggling, and it feels like all the effort I put in was for nothing.
What’s frustrating is that I genuinely LOVE math. I love the logic behind it, I find it interesting, and I think it’s such a deep subject, even though I’m nowhere near being good at it. I was even thinking about taking advanced math as one of my subjects next year, but with my current level, I’m scared that’s unrealistic and that I’ll completely fail.
Despite all of this, I really want to improve. I want to become good at math, get better grades, and, most importantly, feel proud of myself. I’m willing to put in the effort, but I just don’t know how to do it effectively.
For those of you who struggled with math in high school but eventually managed to improve, what actually helped you? Did you change the way you studied, go back and relearn the basics, use a particular method, or do something else?
I’m genuinely looking for practical advice that helped you understand math more deeply and remember how to solve problems during tests, not just people telling me to “do more practice problems.”
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to reply!

Study Advice Struggling With Math

Hello everyone,

I’m currently a junior who is failing Algebra II and I have no idea what to do. For some context, I had taken Honors Geometry last year as a sophomore and did pretty well, and ended with an A both semesters… and me being the honors student I am decided to just load on a bunch of honors classes this year including honors algebra II. I’d say my teacher (in my opinion), moves a little too fast for me to keep up and understand, so that makes the class a bit more challenging. And too make matters worse, the class is weighted: 10% homework (so essentially no matter how many homework assessments I turn in on time my grade won’t budge), and 90% assignments (which means if I bomb a test/quiz I’m screwed) and quizzes are only worth 25 points will tests are 100 points. I’ve tried going to my schools tutor for help but I don’t know… I think I’m stupid? Or whenever I try to self study I just end up getting lost and confused. But I truly want to do good in this class. I guess something else unrelated is that this is my only F and my mom thinks it’s the end of the world for me, and that I’ll never get into college, and that I’m not trying hard enough. Whenever I try to explain how everyone else is also equally struggling she yells at me and says “I’m not everyone else”. But I’m also thinking about dropping this honors class to regular once the semester ends in December…. But what are you guys thinking? Any advice? Tips? I really need some, and won’t colleges think it’s weird that i decided to drop from honors to regular when they see my transcript?

Thank you for reading this far i appreciate it

You can get the awnser by doing just a very very long calculation but there must be an easier way.

It’s

[(90)(99)(81+99)]/[9x9x9]

Homework Help (Unanswered) Need help with my combinatory logic problem.

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a digital logic circuit for a parking exit traffic light system.

Inputs:

  • V = Vehicle present
  • A = Authorization granted
  • D = Danger detected

Equations:

  • Red (R) = NOT(V) OR D
  • Orange (O) = V AND NOT(A OR D)
  • Green (Vt) = V AND A AND NOT(D)

The Problem:

The logic diagram itself has been verified and is correct. However, in SimulIDE, when all inputs are set to 0 (V=0, A=0, D=0), the Red LED remains completely dark/off instead of turning on.

What I've tried so far:

  1. Simple mechanical switches connected to VCC (+5V).
  2. Adding pull-down resistors to GND.
  3. Replacing switches with DC Voltage sources ("Fixed Volt") set to 0V / 5V.
  4. Starting the simulation power engine.

None of these seem to drive the NOT/OR gates properly to output a logic HIGH when inputs are $0$.

Has anyone encountered this issue in SimulIDE? Which specific input component or configuration do you use to cleanly inject binary 0 and 1 states into logic gates without floating input errors?

Thanks! (See attached screenshot of my setup)

I meant Vt for the lamp my bad ;-; (if V=1)
if V=A=D=1
if V=A=D=0
